Seahawks just received a break in Elijah Arroyo contract negotiations

USA Today17-07-2025
49ers second-round DT Alfred Collins, the 43rd overall pick in the draft, has agreed to terms. He's the first of 30 round-two dominoes to fall. https://t.co/ItLJd6LqZi
The Seattle Seahawks are scheduled to report to training camp next week. Meanwhile rookie second-round picks Nick Emmanwori and Elijah Arroyo have yet to sign their rookie deals over a league-wide dispute in guaranteed money in second-round contracts. The current CBA wouldn't allow Emmanwori or Arroyo to attend camp without signed deals, meaning potential holdouts are looming.
The Houston Texans threw negotiations with second-round picks into disarray after making the unprecedented decision to sign No. 35 overall selection Jayden Higgins to a fully-guaranteed contract. The Cleveland Browns followed suit with their 33rd pick Carson Schwesinger. The other 30 second-round draftees had been unsigned ever since, and the Seahawks are especially in a pickle with Emmanwori, who was the pick right after Schwesinger and Higgins.
Though the Emmanwori negotiations remain complicated, Seahawks GM John Schneider just caught a break in talks with Arroyo, his other second-round pick, and he has a division rival to thank. The San Francisco 49ers signed second-round pick Alfred Collins to his rookie contract on Wednesday evening. Collins, the 43rd pick, did NOT receive a fully-guaranteed contract.
Collins saw roughly 87% of his rookie deal guaranteed, according to Pro Football Talk. That's approximately 10% more than the 43rd pick got in guarantees last year, per Mike Florio. With Arroyo being drafted seven picks (No. 50) after Collins, he can no longer realistically expect to sign a fully-guaranteed contract.
The Collins deal serves as a significant breakthrough. Schneider should manage to sign Arroyo to a non-guaranteed rookie deal, one that contains a slight uptick in guarantees compared to last year's 50th pick (following the Collins precedence). Unfortunately for Schneider, the Emmanwori negotiations remain complicated. The Seahawks may have to cave on that front.
At least the Arroyo negotiations should be moving in the right direction after the 49ers' deal with Collins.

Under-the-radar rookie emerging as potential starter for 49ers at vital defensive position

After allowing the fourth-fewest passing yards (192.8 per game) in 2024, the San Francisco 49ers' cornerback room underwent massive changes, including Charvarius Ward, Isaac Yiadom, Nick McCloud and Rock Ya-Sin leaving for new teams and Tre Brown, Siran Neal, Eli Apple and Tre Tomlinson joining in free agency. San Francisco also added a trio of rookies - Jakob Robinson, Derrick Canteen and Upton Stout - to the group. Stout was the team's lone draft pick at cornerback, with the 49ers taking him in the third round out of Western Kentucky. The 49ers have hosted six days of training camp at their SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, California, and with Renardo Green missing time with a hamstring and Deommodore Lenoir missing Tuesday's session, Stout has taken on a bigger role than previously imagined in practice. During his time on the field and in the meeting rooms, Stout has caught the attention of 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who is returning to San Francisco's sidelines after serving as the New York Jets' head coach for the last four seasons. 'He's a sharp kid. It's definitely not too big for him,' Saleh said during a recent media availability. 'We've got to be careful as a coaching staff, you know, you've still got to slow play it. Regardless of how smart you feel like they are, there are still a lot of things that they're still learning, so you just want to, we'll push the envelope, but never too far to where he can't execute his job. But that's stuff we're learning, trying to figure out who he is and what he's capable of. That's really for everybody on the defense. It's finding out what they're capable of and pushing the envelope to meet that line of their ability to execute to their God-given ability... "Like I said on Stout, he's doing a really good job. The biggest thing for all these rookies, just do your job, be 100 in that regard. And I think he's doing a really nice job. He's been beat a few times, obviously there's a couple of coverage things that he's been beat on, but it's all learning. It's for all those guys, for the entire defense, it's grinding through rep after rep and trying to fine tune your craft.' Stout began his collegiate career at North Texas in 2020 before transferring to Western Kentucky in 2022. Over the last three years he earned All-Conference honors thrice and FCS All-American honors twice while recording 125 tackles (11 for a loss), 11 passes defensed, six interceptions, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovered in 33 games. The 23-year-old has a lot of work to do before he earns a starting role as a rookie, but there's certainly a path for him to do so, especially considering he's already earning praise from his coordinator. Trey Lance career timeline: How 49ers draft pick landed with Chargers

Trey Lance entered his NFL career to a lot of fanfare. The North Dakota State product was a member of the touted 2021 draft class, which was believed to be loaded at quarterback. In total, five quarterbacks were selected in the first round of that year's draft. Lance was the third of the group, and landed in what many believed to be a favorable situation with the San Francisco 49ers. However, Lance's early career didn't go as he had hoped. He is now looking to carve out a role for himself on his third different team as he enters his fifth NFL season, a fate four of his fellow first-round quarterbacks are also resigned to in 2025. Here's what to know about Lance's career to date and how he landed with the Los Angeles Chargers. Trey Lance career timeline 49ers select Trey Lance No. 3 overall in 2021 NFL Draft San Francisco traded four draft picks to the Miami Dolphins to move up from No. 12 overall to No. 3 ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, a signal the 49ers were going to select a quarterback. It was just a matter of which prospect they would select. Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson came off the board with the top two picks, which left the 49ers a choice of Lance, Justin Fields or Mac Jones with the third selection. Ultimately, the team decided to bank on the uber-athletic Lance's dual-threat upside. Lance had started just one full season for North Dakota State, as his final college season was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, Lance led the Bison to a perfect 16-0 record and an FCS title. He completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns with no interceptions while adding 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Lance was just 21 years old when he was drafted, and his raw tools excited NFL talent evaluators. Many believed he would need time to develop behind the scenes at the NFL level, but they were also curious to see what he would be able to achieve in Kyle Shanahan's quarterback-friendly system. Trey Lance named 49ers starter for 2022, injured in Week 2 Lance played sparingly as a rookie. He went 1-1 in two starts backing up Jimmy Garoppolo, completing 57.7% of his passes for 603 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 168 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries. Lance flashed enough that San Francisco made him its starter entering the 2022 NFL season. However, he played just 84 total snaps on the year, as he broke his ankle in the first quarter of the team's Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Lance missed the remainder of the season because of his ankle injury. Garoppolo first took over for him before rookie Brock Purdy emerged as San Francisco's top signal-caller. The seventh-round rookie led the 49ers to an NFC championship game appearance and established himself as the team's quarterback of the future. NFL POWER RANKINGS: As preseason nears, who are Eagles' main threats? Trey Lance traded to Cowboys ahead of 2023 NFL season Because Purdy suffered a throwing-elbow injury in the NFC championship game, it was believed Lance might have a chance to battle him for the starting job in 2023. Instead, the North Dakota State product found himself behind both Purdy and free-agent acquisition Sam Darnold on San Francisco's depth chart ahead of the season. Lance performed well in the preseason, completing 22 of 33 passes for 285 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in two outings. Eventually, the 49ers traded him to the Cowboys for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, which would later become safety Malik Mustapha. Lance dressed for just four games across his two seasons with the Cowboys and made one start. He completed 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards and ran for 26 yards in Dallas' Week 18 loss to the Washington Commanders at the end of the 2024 NFL season. The Cowboys elected not to exercise Lance's fifth-year option before the final year of his rookie contract and opted not to re-sign him during the 2025 offseason. Instead, they traded for second-year quarterback Joe Milton to battle Will Grier for the backup quarterback job behind Dak Prescott. Trey Lance signs one-year, $2 million deal with Chargers Lance lingered on the free-agent market until April, when the Chargers signed him to a one-year deal to battle Taylor Heinicke for the backup job behind Justin Herbert. Lance's deal with the Chargers is worth a base value of $2 million that could escalate to $6.2 million if certain incentives are met. Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh is looking forward to seeing what Lance can do on the field during the 2025 NFL preseason. "He's had a heck of a camp," Harbaugh said of Lance, per "I just want to get Trey Lance game experience," Harbaugh later added. "With his career and then in college, he doesn't have as much as most guys."

Why Raiders coach Pete Carroll is still ‘bringing it' every single day

HENDERSON, Nev. — Every member of the Las Vegas Raiders gathered together in a tight circle Sunday morning following practice, with head coach Pete Carroll pushing orders from the middle. Then, from deep inside the scrum, a football soared straight into the air, followed by two players' rising hands until one victoriously swatted it back into the mosh pit. Carroll had orchestrated a competitive jump-ball drill between two players who had gotten into a shoving match earlier in practice. They went three rounds, and the entire team whooped and hollered the whole time. 'After you have a jump ball,' Carroll smirked, 'you can't be mad anymore.' The 73-year-old coaching legend emerged, somewhat surprisingly, from a quiet year of reflection to take over the Raiders. When Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks parted in 2024, those close to him believed he still had ample coaching years left in the tank, although no one really knew how he'd play it. Advertisement As it turned out, Carroll wanted some time to himself before determining the desire was very much still alive. 'I had to let the dust settle a little bit and get a feel for what that was like being out (of the league),' Carroll told The Athletic recently. 'Once that cleared, the pursuit of the passion was too obvious.' With Carroll, the passion is understood. He went 181-131-1, including the playoffs, while coaching the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Seahawks over 18 seasons, highlighted by a victory in Super Bowl XLVIII. He also led USC to a 97-19 record with two national championships, one of which was later vacated. Carroll, who will become the oldest head coach in NFL history this season, has thrived throughout his career with sharp charisma and an unmatched ability to maintain a high level of excitement in the building. Of course, his defensive acumen has always been an asset, as well. It was all so clear with the jump-ball competition. It was simple on the surface, but it served as a perfect way to give the players a charge as they pushed through the grind of training camp. Such things are a daily occurrence around here, even if it's in the form of a now-routine transitional practice period when the players bound over blocking pads as coaches and trainers jump around with heavy bags, swinging ropes and yelling as Rage Against the Machine blared in the background. It was a quick stretching drill that looked more like a scene from 'Mad Max: Fury Road.' With the Patriots, there were stories of Carroll canceling practice and packing the players onto buses with kegs on their way to bonding events. With the Seahawks, Carroll opened the mornings with 3-point shooting contests. And to be sure, there are likely thousands of other comparable examples. 'I only know one way to do it,' Carroll said. 'I'm not doing anything different than I did when I was coaching at (Pacific) a million years ago. I'm just having fun coaching and making sure I affect as many people as I can. … I can't ask them to go if I'm not going, so I bring it every day.' Advertisement But what is Carroll's pursuit? He's tied for 17th with 170 regular-season victories and is one of three coaches to win both a national championship and Super Bowl. Carroll, who turns 74 in September, has a secure legacy and could have kicked up his feet in retirement without anyone batting an eye. Carroll just isn't much of a feet-up kind of guy. 'You're either competing or you're not,' he said. 'I just like battling. I like competing. That's exactly what it is. The passion was alive and well. In chasing it, we wound up here with the Raiders.' Carroll's challenge in Las Vegas is real. The Raiders finished 4-13 last season, their worst record in a decade, and they haven't won a playoff game since 2002. They've fired three general managers and three head coaches since 2021, so the roster will need quite a bit more time to be constructed under the vision of Carroll and GM John Spytek. Carroll is ready to compete, though. He was rarely far from a football field during his year off, watching games from junior varsity in high school to the NFL, where he has plenty of friends with various teams. His son, Raiders assistant quarterbacks coach Nate Carroll, was with the Carolina Panthers in 2024. His other son, Raiders offensive line coach and run game coordinator Brennan Carroll, was at the University of Washington. Naturally, Pete Carroll had rooting interests from coast to coast. Go figure, a football lifer like Carroll even found new ways to appreciate the game while he was between jobs. 'There are a million (ways),' Carroll said. 'I'll give you an example about effort, how hard guys play the game or how hard they don't play the game. Snaps last about six or seven seconds. It's not that long to strain. I watched it from the kids all the way through into the league. They don't play as hard as they could. I made it a real emphasis for us in this camp and with this team. … We're going to play as hard as we're capable.' Let's get it! #RaiderNation — Las Vegas Raiders (@Raiders) July 23, 2025 Not that Carroll has ever lacked for energy, but his message has backing. He's still running around the field as much as possible, putting his arm around a cornerback's shoulders while giving a lesson about the previous play or darting up to a tight end to slap his chest after a nice adjustment led to a quality catch. Advertisement Carroll most certainly still looks like himself on the field. 'It made it a really successful offseason because I could see things differently than I'd seen them before. You have to get away,' Carroll said. 'I tried to make this a really profitable year, as well. I feel like it's been invigorating. You see things a little differently. You have a clear mind.'
