SCERT releases revised timetable structure for Class 1 to accomodate third language

Indian Express19-06-2025
The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) on Thursday released a revised timetable structure for Class 1 to accommodate a third language. This came a day after the Maharashtra government issued a revised Government Resolution (GR) stating that Hindi will be taught as the third language in Marathi and English medium schools across the state for Classes 1 to 5.
With the new timetable, the stipulated minutes to be spent on each subject have been reduced, creating a major gap from what is recommended under National Curriculum Framework (NCF).
The document released by SCERT, adds a third language to Classes 1 and 2 formally, as until now, the only official document in this regard, which is State Curriculum Framework-Foundation Stage (FS), recommended only two languages for these classes, as per NCF.
'The changes will be applicable to Class 1 from academic year 2025-26. Whereas for Class 2, these changes will be applied after the introduction of the new syllabus and curriculum as per the SCF,' states the document released by SCERT Director Rahul Rekhawar.
Even as the NCF-recommended timetable structure suggests 50 to 60 minutes spent on each subject, the state's revised timetable structure reduced it to 35 minutes.
'This was bound to happen as the NCF-FS includes only seven subjects, whereas the state has added one more subject by introducing a third language from Class 1. To accommodate the additional subject, time spent on all other subjects has been reduced,' said Mahendra Ganpule, former head of the Maharashtra School Principals Association.
The note released by SCERT also provides a sample timetable. It states 'Schools can design their own timetable, based on their timings. But they will have to stick to the stipulated time mandate per subject.'
According to schools, this announcement has come very late as schools have already started and structuring the timetable is finalised way before that.
'Now that we are almost a week into the new academic year, a new timetable guideline has been issued. Schools have already started with the timetable structure issued in the past in the SCF-FS, which does not include a third language for Class 1,' said a senior teacher.
Schools have also complained that the government has included a new subject into the timetable structure for Class 1, without clarity on teachers to teach the third language, alternatives to Hindi, and curriculum guidelines.

Desperate bid to control BMC & loot Mumbai: BJP

Pune/Mumbai: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday took a swipe at the Thackerays' rally and said instead of a triumphant rally for the Marathi language, it turned out to be a hollow speech, resembling the wailing of "Rudali" (woman professional mourner). "I was told it would be a victory speech, but there was one Rudali speech also. Instead of speaking about the Marathi language, it was Rudali mentioning how their govt was pulled down. There was no victory speech in Marathi," Fadnavis said, without taking any names, after reaching Pandharpur on the eve of Ashadhi Ekadashi. He will lead a special puja at the Vitthal Rakhumai temple with his wife Amruta, on behalf of state govt, on Sunday. While the CM was in Pandharpur, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, in his speech at the victory rally in Worli with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray , sarcastically said his uncle and Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray could not unite him and Uddhav, but Fadnavis' governance brought them together after 18 years. "They could not do any notable work. But we changed the face of Mumbai under the leadership of PM Modi at the Centre. Under their (Uddhav's) leadership, Marathi manoos had to leave Mumbai. But when we formed govt, we ensured that the Marathi manoos of BDD chawl, Patra chawl and Abhyuday Nagar got rehabilitated at the same place. Yeah public hai, sab janti hai (The public knows everything)," the CM said. "Be it Marathi or non-Marathi people of Mumbai, they all are with us. We are proud Marathis, but at the same time, we are proud Hindus too. Our Hindutva takes everybody along," Fadnavis added. BJP Mumbai president and minister Ashish Shelar stated on X, "This was not for the language.. but a public appeal for the elections! With the municipal elections approaching, the panicked Uddhav Sena, scared of BJP, now remembers brotherhood ties… This is a desperate struggle to gain power in the municipality and to loot Mumbai again."

Uprising in Maharashtra should open eyes: Stalin

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Saturday said DMK and Tamil Nadu's long-standing language rights movement against Hindi imposition has now expanded beyond state borders, sparking waves of protest in Maharashtra. He warned the BJP of repercussions for its policies towards Tamil language and culture. Addressing Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray as his brother, Stalin said in a post on X that "the spirited victory rally held in Mumbai (on Saturday) under Thackeray's leadership and the resounding speeches against Hindi imposition" were encouraging. "The BJP, which illegally and arbitrarily insists that Hindi be taught as a third language in Tamil Nadu schools as a precondition to funding, was compelled to retreat for a second time in Maharashtra, fearing public backlash in a state under its governance," Stalin said. Stalin criticized those who support the idea that "learning Hindi will guarantee jobs". He urged them to reconsider their stance, taking into account the history of Indian languages affected by Hindi dominance and the alleged plan to homogenise India into a "Hindi nation". He said, "The uprising in Maharashtra should open their eyes." You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai He highlighted questions raised by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray at the same rally regarding the imposition of Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states. "What is the third language taught in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan? Why is Hindi being forced upon the progressive non-Hindi speaking states, when Hindi-speaking states themselves lag behind," Stalin quoted Raj Thackeray. He said a Union govt that prioritises development of Hindi and Sanskrit had no answers to these questions. Stalin affirmed that DMK govt would resist "financial discrimination" against Tamil Nadu and the refusal to acknowledge the Keeladi civilisation. He cautioned the BJP to address its actions against Tamil Nadu and its culture. "The BJP must find a remedy for the betrayal that the party is committing against Tamil Nadu and its culture. If not, the people of Tamil Nadu will teach the BJP and its new allies a lesson they will not forget," he said.
