The Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill 2024, in its current form, has dropped references to 'urban naxals' and instead proposed an advisory board to oversee police probes and action to counter the influence of Naxalism.
Officials said the bill will be introduced in the assembly by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis in the monsoon session next week and is likely to be cleared. The state legislature had in Dec 2024 referred it to an all-party joint select committee panel for review.
Officials said objectives and some provisions of the bill have been diluted after more than 1,200 suggestions/objections were received.
"The joint select committee had members from all parties," said BJP minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who headed the panel. "The bill will protect youth in the state from going into naxalism."
The draft now provides for an advisory board headed by a retired high court judge and with a district judge and a government pleader on it to approve action or investigations by police.
Under the provisions, the organisations being probed will also be given a chance to be heard by the board.
The investigation will have to be led by an assistant commissioner of police in urban areas and deputy superintendent of police in rural areas instead of the earlier provision for a police sub-inspector. "So political parties or individuals won't be targeted by this bill," Bawankule said.

'Wealth Getting Centralised In Hands Of Few': Gadkari Flags Widening Rich-Poor Divide

Last Updated: Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Gadkari highlighted the need for decentralising wealth to ensure fairer growth Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday expressed concern over the growing number of poor people in India and said wealth was becoming increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small group of rich individuals. Speaking at an event in Nagpur, Gadkari highlighted the need for decentralising wealth to ensure fairer growth. He discussed several issues, including agriculture, manufacturing, taxation, and partnerships between the public and private sectors in infrastructure development. 'Slowly the number of poor people is increasing and wealth is getting centralised in the hands of some wealthy people. It should not happen," said the Road Transport and Highways Minister. Gadkari stressed that the economy must grow in a way that creates jobs and uplifts rural areas. 'We are looking at an economic option that will create jobs and (give a boost to the) growth of the economy. There is a need for decentralisation of wealth, and many changes have happened in that direction," he said. The senior BJP leader praised former prime ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh for introducing liberal economic policies but warned against unchecked concentration of wealth. 'We have to be worried about it," he added. He also pointed out the imbalance in India's economy. 'Manufacturing contributes 22-24 per cent, services 52-54 per cent, while agriculture, despite engaging 65-70 per cent of the rural population, contributes only around 12 per cent," Gadkari said. Gadkari also spoke about the evolving role of chartered accountants, calling them potential engines of economic growth beyond their usual tax-related duties. 'CAs can be the growth engines of the economy. Our economy is changing rapidly. It is not only about filing income tax returns and GST submissions," he added. CM Fadnavis launches podcast 'Maharashtra Dharma', urges people to preserve legacy of state's icons

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday appealed to citizens to preserve and nurture the knowledge shared by the state's saints and icons, calling it a responsibility. Maharashtra produced not just warriors, but protectors of dharma, visionaries of the nation, and architects of modern India, he said. "Though we may not be the direct descendants of Dnyaneshwar, Shivaji Maharaj, Savitribai Phule and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, we are the carriers of their intellectual legacy. With their knowledge, sacrifice, and courage, they shaped this state," he said. He was speaking during the first episode of his podcast 'Maharashtra Dharma', launched on 'Ashadhi Ekadashi'. The podcast was conducted by scholar Dr Sadanand More. "Preserving, nurturing, and advancing the intellectual legacy of Maharashtra's saints and icons is our duty," said Fadnavis. 'Maharashtra Dharma' is not mere nostalgia, it is people's moral compass, he said. "'Maharashtra Dharma' is understanding who we are and determining what we want to become," the CM said. During his first tenure as the chief minister between 2014 and 2019, Fadnavis had hosted a television show named ‘Mi Mukhyamantri Boltoy'. The first episode, titled 'Maharashtra Dharma: Foundation and Formation', covered topics ranging from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to the teachings of Gautam Buddha and the evolution of Maharashtra's spiritual journey.
