Cooper Flagg is ready to do whatever the Mavs ask

Reutersa day ago

June 27 - Cooper Flagg has enormous shoes to fill, trying to carry the mantle of the likes of Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic in Dallas, but the NBA draft's No. 1 pick is willing to do whatever is asked of him to help the Mavericks continue their recent success.
And head coach Jason Kidd, who was the No. 2 pick by Dallas in the 1994 NBA Draft, is ready to challenge the Duke alum.
"I think it's a versatile position, doing a lot of different things," Flagg said of his expectations on the court at his introductory press conference Friday in Dallas. "I think with the team, looking at the roster, we can play a really good brand of positionless basketball, with a lot of guys that can do a lot of different things. So I think that'll be one of the biggest strengths, and trying to play to that and just doing whatever I can to help the team win."
Kidd is also looking forward to the versatility that Flagg brings.
"I don't look at the position. I want to put him at the point guard," Kidd told reporters Friday. "I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show, being able to play the two, play the three -- he's comfortable playing that but we want to push, and I think he's going to respond in a positive way."
Kidd called out Flagg's maturity as the teenager fielded questions with all eyes on him.
"Just sitting here listening to him, isn't it incredible? I mean we're talking about an 18-year-old who has all the right answers and is talking about working out after this," Kidd said. "Just his poise, he's going to be successful for a long time. He likes to work, he's not afraid to work. ... I'm very blessed and the Mavs are very blessed to have him be a part of the family."
Joining a team with NBA Finals aspirations and the likes of Kyrie Irving, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington and Dereck Lively II puts the Newport, Maine native in the unusual position of being a top pick on a team that's ready to win it all now. Flagg considers that a blessing.
"A lot of people in this position or this situation aren't granted this opportunity," Flagg said, "so I just feel really blessed and grateful for the situation I've been given and I'm just looking forward to being a sponge, you know, just getting down here excited to just learn, soak it all in and learn from the guys that are older have been through it all before."
Kidd is eager to put Flagg to work.
"I'm excited about giving him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens," he said. "Let's get it started right off the bat."

Marlins rally from 4 runs down to beat D-backs in 10 innings

June 28 - Agustin Ramirez singled in the winning run in the 10th inning and the Miami Marlins overcame a four-run deficit to extend their season-best winning streak to six games with an 8-7, 10-inning victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Saturday. Ramirez had three hits, including two doubles, and drove in two. Otto Lopez homered and drove in three while extending his hitting streak to nine games, during which he is 16 of 37 with 13 RBIs. Ketel Marte hit a three-run homer and drove in four, Geraldo Perdomo had three hits and scored twice and James McCann had two hits and an RBI for the D-backs, who have lost three in a row. Lopez homered in a three-run eighth to start the Marlins' comeback that made it 7-6, and the Marlins tied it in the ninth off Shelby Miller, who blew his fifth save. Dane Myers singled to open the ninth and stole second and third -- that on a call that was overturned by replay review -- before scoring on Heriberto Hernandez's sacrifice fly to tie it. Anthony Bender (2-5) retired all six he faced for the win. Juan Morillo (0-2) gave up Ramirez's leadoff single in the 10th that scored automatic runner Lopez. D-backs starter Brandon Pfaadt gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) in five innings, with seven strikeouts and one walk. He gave up two runs in a 34-pitch first inning but struck out the side after loading the bases to avoid further damage. Sandy Alcantara gave up seven runs and 10 hits in six innings, leaving after throwing 91 pitches. He struck out four without a walk. He had made quality starts in three of his last four appearances. The first five Marlins reached base in the 2-0 first. Xavier Edwards and Jesus Sanchez singled, and Edwards scored on shortstop Perdomo's fielding error. Ramirez's ground-rule double drove in Sanchez, and Pfaadt walked Kyle Stowers to load the bases before striking out the side. Perdomo doubled and scored on Pavin Smith's sacrifice fly in the last of the first. Eric Wagaman's RBI double in the third gave the Marlins a 3-1 lead before Marte hit his 16th homer to cap a five-run fourth. Perdomo's two-out single drove in McCarthy before Marte's opposite-field homer made it 6-3. McCann doubled and scored on Marte's sacrifice fly for a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. --Field Level Media

Royals top Dodgers to snap 11-game home skid

June 28 - Kansas City's offense woke up after Shohei Ohtani exited from tossing two scoreless innings, and the Royals snapped their 11-game home skid with Saturday's 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Vinnie Pasquantino led Kansas City with a three-run homer and five RBIs. Bobby Witt Jr. and Jonathan India each had four hits for the Royals, who scored one more run than they did while losing their previous six games overall. Meanwhile, Royals pitcher Seth Lugo (5-5) allowed four hits and five walks while striking out eight over 5 2/3 scoreless innings. Daniel Lynch IV yielded a solo homer to Freddie Freeman, who had three hits, in the seventh, but the potent Dodgers did not threaten until a four-run ninth. After going an inning in each of his first two 2025 starts, Ohtani was stretched to two innings on Saturday. He allowed a first-inning single to Witt and walked Maikel Garcia but got Pasquantino to hit into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play. The right-hander then retired the side in the second, completing his 27-pitch performance. As he had done in Ohtani's first two starts, Ben Casparius (6-2) came on in the third, and the Royals wasted no time getting to the right-hander. He walked Drew Waters, allowed a two-out single to India, followed by Witt's flare double near the right-field line. Then Garcia sent a drive off the top of the left-field wall, just over the glove of a leaping Michael Conforto, for a two-run double. The Royals broke things open in the fifth against Casparius. Kyle Isbel rapped a one-out hit and advanced to second base on center-fielder Andy Pages' error. He then scored on an India single. After Witt singled and Garcia lined out, Pasquantino found the right-center field fan area for his first homer at home since May 16, giving Kansas City a 6-0 lead. Pasquantino doubled down the right-field line in the seventh, scoring two more. He then came home on Salvador Perez's two-base hit. Ohtani went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts at the plate. --Field Level Media

Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr LIVE RESULTS: Card on NOW ahead of Problem Child's brawl with boxing legend's son

SOCIAL media superstar turned boxer, Jake Paul, is hoping to take another huge scalp TONIGHT when he faces Mexican mogul Julio Cesar Chavez Jr! The Problem Child was under a lot of scrutiny when he last competitively stepped foot in the ring. Paul, 28, outpointed 58-year-old legendary boxer Mike Tyson for the whole of Netflix to see, and it was a decision that ended in unanimous boos around the AT&T stadium. But ultimately, it was a huge win for Paul, and he'll be hoping to extend his 11-1 professional record when he faces the son of icon, Julio Cesar Chavez. SunSport will be on top of all the drama as it unfolds, including the undercard, which is currently underway. 7 minutes ago By Tom Sheen Here we go! Hello and welcome to SunSport's live coverage of Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr! It's a massive night in California with a packed crowd ready to watch the Problem Child take on the highly decorated former world midleweight champion. Chavez Jr is long past his prime but is - if you're not counting a 58-year-old Mike Tyson (you shouldn't) - the toughest opponent of Paul's career to date. The Mexican was a legitimate world champion in his heyday, even if he didn't quite live up to the legendary expectations set because of his name and father.
