Proton has officially revealed the new EV at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 in MAEPS Serdang. However, the official unveiling today did not reveal the car's full look. Instead, the e.MAS 5 shown today is still camouflaged with a custom wrapping. As for its name, Proton said the number '5' in the e.MAS 5 name signifies the EV's compact form factor as opposed as to its older and larger SUV sibling, the e.MAS 7. At the same time, the national automaker is aiming the e.MAS 5 towards the younger crowd while e.MAS 7 is meant for families. What are the Proton e.MAS 5 specs? Unfortunately, the official specs of the EV are still a secret for the time being. That being said, we have some idea of how they going to be. This is because the e.MAS 5 is based on Geely Xingyuan, also known as the Geely Star Wish. Here are the top-line specs for the Xingyuan: Base variant: 30.1kWh LFP battery Range: ~280km (WLTP)
Output: 78hp, 130Nm Premium variant: 40.2kWh LFP battery Range: ~380km (WLTP)
Output: 114hp, 150Nm 2,650mm wheelbase 375L rear boot, expandable to 1,320Lwith seats down 70L frunk with a 25kg limit 20L centre console, 10L dash drawer, and a rear under-seat storage bin 10.25' digital instrument cluster 14.6' infotainment touchscreen with Flyme OS On a related note, Proton has previously said that the high-voltage battery for the new EV will be 'included' with the car. This is generally a light-hearted reference to Perodua's plan to introduce battery leasing for its upcoming EV. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Rights groups demand Nepal revoke Telegram ban over freedom concerns

KATHMANDU: Rights groups on Thursday urged Nepal to reverse a ban on the Telegram messaging app, calling the move a serious threat to freedom of expression and digital privacy. The Himalayan nation blocked access to the app on July 18, citing a rise in online fraud and money laundering. 'The government's ban is a serious human rights violation and a discriminatory decision,' said Taranath Dahal of Freedom Forum, a media freedom watchdog. 'This shows the government can ban any platform without transparency, which is extremely concerning.' Freedom Forum was among more than two dozen organisations to release a statement demanding an 'immediate' reversal of the ban. 'The sudden, unlawful disruption has severely impacted journalists, human rights defenders, students, small businesses, and others who depend on the platform for essential day-to-day communication,' said a statement released by #KeepItOn, an international coalition of civil society organisations. Min Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, confirmed the government's directive. 'We asked all internet service providers to block the app after receiving an order from the Prime Minister's Office,' Aryal told AFP. Nepal has restricted access to popular online platforms in the past. In August last year, the government lifted a nine-month ban on TikTok after the platform's South Asia division agreed to comply with Nepali regulations. Telegram, launched in 2013, is a cloud-based messaging app known for its privacy features and support for large group chats and broadcast channels. The app has an estimated billion users worldwide, but faces restrictions in some countries. Telegram's Russian-born founder and chief executive Pavel Durov was briefly detained in France last year and questioned again this week about the platform's alleged complicity in criminal activity. – AFP

‘Many still unaware about State-funded insurance scheme'

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Mardinah Jikur Text Size: George (center) during the visit to the insurance office in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: The people of Sabah are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the accident insurance plan fully covered by the state government, to ensure they do not miss out on the benefits of protection in the event of an accident. Karamunting State Assemblyman, Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin, stated that this plan has been in effect since May 1, yet many people are still unaware of its existence. This plan really matters, especially for those with lower incomes. They are not required to pay anything, yet they are still covered. 'However, many people are still unaware of this insurance,' he said. He made the statement after visiting the Sandakan branch office of Progressive Insurance Bhd, the insurance company appointed to manage the scheme. George also sought clarification on the application and claims process to assist in facilitating the affairs of heirs eligible to make claims. This plan covers all local residents of Sabah aged between one month and 80 years, with a maximum compensation of RM10,000 for cases of death or permanent disability due to accidents. It also provides a funeral condolence payment of RM500. This scheme will run for three years until April 30, 2028. Compensation should be paid out as soon as 14 days, and no later than 30 days after all the paperwork is submitted. George stated that his service team has recently received several cases indicating that the victims' heirs were unaware of their eligibility to make claims. Therefore, heirs or eligible individuals may visit the Progressive Insurance Bhd office here with complete documents, such as a police report or death certificate, to apply accordingly. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
