Proton mulls BEV plant in Kazakhstan

Proton Holdings Bhd is considering assembling battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, according to local reports citing government sources. Malaysia's first national automaker is understood to be exploring opportunities to assemble its series of BEVs in the country. Proton launched production of its first BEV model, the 7, in Malaysia at the end of last year. It is based on China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group's Galaxy E5 model. Proton began exporting the 7 earlier this year, to markets including Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago. Proton representatives recently travelled to Kazakhstan and held meetings with government officials, including Industry Minister Yersayin Nagaspayev. Following the meeting, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Industry said in a statement: 'Proton presented plans to produce electric cars under the brand. Discussions focused on potential production sites, export opportunities, and ensuring compliance with the technical and environmental standards of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).' Proton and the Ministry of Industry have agreed to establish a joint working group to 'develop a strategy to localize production and establish joint investment projects.' The Ministry revealed that Kazakhstan produced just over 134,000 passenger cars in 2024, by major international brands including GM-Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, JAC, and Jetour. Two new plants are scheduled to go into operation in the country this year, in Almaty and Kostanay. Cumulative BEV sales in the country amounted to 9,400 units as of the end of May 2025. "Proton mulls BEV plant in Kazakhstan" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand. Proton e.MAS 7 becomes Malaysia's fastest-selling EV, 3,632 units sold as at May 31

PETALING JAYA: As the Proton brand marks its first anniversary, Proton Holdings Bhd subsidiary Pro-Net reported that 7 continues to be the No. 1 electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia, with 3,632 units sold as at May 31 – comprising 3,399 units locally and 233 exported. Achieving this milestone within just five months since deliveries began in January, the 7 has come Malaysia's fastest-selling EV. This achievement comes just one year after the launch of the Proton brand. Unveiled in June 12, 2024, the brand introduced its flagship model, the 7, on Dec 16, 2024, which has since emerged as a frontrunner in Malaysia's fast-evolving EV segment. Despite pricing pressures across the EV market, the 7 continues to perform strongly, signalling a clear reflection of the trust Malaysians place in the Proton brand and its commitment to quality. 'This strong show of support from Malaysians is incredibly encouraging. It validates our strategy, strengthens belief in the Proton brand, and reaffirms the value of investing in home-grown innovation,' said Pro-Net CEO Zhang Qiang. 'The 7's success is a strong indicator of where the market is heading and we're proud to be leading that charge.' More than just selling cars, Pro-Net is also actively expanding the ecosystem that removes barriers to everyday EV adoption and a better ownership experience. In just one year, Proton has included more than 2,500 public charging points in the Integrated Live Charging Map inside the 7 and in the app, offering a coverage of over 90% nationwide. To support EV customers nationwide, 44 Proton dealerships have been appointed, with 32 already operational. The brand has also expanded its after-sales footprint with six more 3S centres opening soon, adding to the 24 3S centres that have been servicing customers. 'We are deeply grateful to all Malaysians who have supported Proton from the very beginning,' said Zhang. 'Your enthusiasm, trust, and belief in our vision have made this journey possible. As we look ahead, we remain committed to making electric mobility more accessible, more reliable, and more Malaysian than ever. The future is electric, and it's proudly ours to build together.' As part of the Proton First Anniversary celebration, the Peace of Mind Campaign offers existing owners a complimentary 32-point vehicle inspection, covering key areas such as brake pads, battery, electronic systems, lighting, tires, wipers and air conditioning. The campaign also includes a free software inspection. Thie initiative runs from June 1, to July 1.

Proton to launch second EV model in Q4

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd's wholly-owned Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net) is set to launch its newest electric vehicle (EV) model called 5 in the fourth quarter of 2025. Pro-Net chief branding officer Salawati Mohd Yusoff said the latest EV differs from its first model, the 7, in terms of segment as the former EV is a compact sport utility vehicle (C-SUV), while the 5 falls under the B-segment hatchback category. "Thus, in terms of size, the 5 is much more compact than the We will be offering five different colour options for this model. "In terms of pricing, we cannot reveal it just yet, but our models are generally priced above RM100,000. We hope to position the price of the newest EV slightly better and more affordable," she told Bernama at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 on Thursday. The 5 will be available in two variants - the Prime model with a range of 345 kilometres (km), and the Premium variant, offering a range of up to 410km. Pro-Net is confident that the latest EV will be well received in the market, given the encouraging response to its first EV model, as Malaysians have shown growing interest and openness towards switching to EVs. Proton has officially revealed the new EV at the Malaysia Autoshow 2025 in MAEPS Serdang. However, the official unveiling today did not reveal the car's full look. Instead, the 5 shown today is still camouflaged with a custom wrapping. As for its name, Proton said the number '5' in the 5 name signifies the EV's compact form factor as opposed as to its older and larger SUV sibling, the 7. At the same time, the national automaker is aiming the 5 towards the younger crowd while 7 is meant for families. What are the Proton 5 specs? Unfortunately, the official specs of the EV are still a secret for the time being. That being said, we have some idea of how they going to be. This is because the 5 is based on Geely Xingyuan, also known as the Geely Star Wish. Here are the top-line specs for the Xingyuan: Base variant: 30.1kWh LFP battery Range: ~280km (WLTP) Output: 78hp, 130Nm Premium variant: 40.2kWh LFP battery Range: ~380km (WLTP) Output: 114hp, 150Nm 2,650mm wheelbase 375L rear boot, expandable to 1,320Lwith seats down 70L frunk with a 25kg limit 20L centre console, 10L dash drawer, and a rear under-seat storage bin 10.25' digital instrument cluster 14.6' infotainment touchscreen with Flyme OS On a related note, Proton has previously said that the high-voltage battery for the new EV will be 'included' with the car. This is generally a light-hearted reference to Perodua's plan to introduce battery leasing for its upcoming EV. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
