Billy Bragg: 'An audience can generate a sense of of social solidarity'

Metro13-05-2025
When he was starting out as a young singer-songwriter and rabble-rouser, Billy Bragg used to pride himself on nicking other people's audiences.
A spot at a talent competition at the famous Bridgehouse pub in Canning Town, east London, in the early 1980s – one of his first appearances playing solo in front of an audience – had caught the attention of someone at the Tunnel Club in Greenwich.
Billy's 'angry poet with an electric guitar' style might have only won him second place in the contest, but it went down well in the venue at the south end of the Blackhall Tunnel.
His job was warming up the crowd before the main act, a role he sometimes performed a bit too well.
'If I came off and almost got an encore, the headliners were looking at cranky at me – they were gonna follow what I just done – I was always thought that was brilliant,' he told Metro.
'I mean, I wouldn't get much money for it, but I was learning my craft. I was learning how to grow, you know, sort of grab an audience.'
The picture he paints of the music scene in London at that point is vibrant: the New Romantics may have been starting to swallow up the mainstream, but this diverse city had a culture to match.
'One night would be a ska band. Another night might be a traditional rock band,' Billy said.
'There was a band called True Life Confessions who had a couple of strippers with them, that was a bit weird.
'And there was a heavy metal band that I remember – during my brief sound check, they were taking thunderflashes to the front of the stage, which I thought was a bit over-the-top for a pub in east London.'
The Tunnel Club doubled as a comedy club at the time, giving Billy more licence to try out his patter on the crowd.
A video jukebox was usually kept running during the musical performances, so he would mimic the 'strange, jerky' dance moves of the Tears for Fears boys to the delight of the pubgoers.
He said: 'I didn't really have much style, as you've probably noticed if you've looked at any photographs throughout my career, but I did have a lot of content, and part of that content was talking to the audience.
'I don't think you can learn that if you haven't gone out there and played those kind of small venues. You have to engage with people.'
On a recent trip to London, Billy walked south along Tottenham Court Road which links Euston with Trafalgar Square.
Starting at the north end, near Warren Street Tube station, he could see the building that once housed the Embassy Rooms venue.
Then there was the old Roebuck pub, where his mum first saw him perform: 'The NME was there and wanted to talk to her as well. And she told them, you know, he doesn't normally talk like that.'
Walking further down, he passed the Dominion, where he once opened for the Style Council. The Astoria, the Borderline – all venues where he had once taken to the stage, all now closed.
'So it's kind of saddened me a bit,' he said. 'Because it's those venues that give people a chance to try out their stuff and find out – you know, how do you find out if your songs were any good, if you only even played them to your girlfriend or your mum or your bedroom mirror?
'You got to get out in front of people. You got to take those first steps, those first tentative steps. More Trending
'You know, I've always believed that the hardest thing to do in rock and roll is make that step between leaving your day job and making a living doing gigs, and you're never going to get there, you know, nobody just suddenly arrives.'
London still has almost 180 precious grassroots music venues that still give performers the opportunity to play to a crowd – an opportunity that could change their life, or just make life feel a little better.
'An audience can generate a sense of of social solidarity. It's not a political thing, because you're in a room with paper and they're all focusing on one thing, and they're all cheering one thing, and they're all enjoying one thing, Billy said.
'You as a member of the audience, you feel sort of part of something bigger, you know – I mean, I'm into this cool thing, and everyone else thinks it's cool, therefore, maybe I'm cool too.'

Taskmaster 2025 winner reveals what you didn't see in 'best season ever'

Taskmaster season 19 has come to a triumphant end with BBC star Mathew Baynton celebrating an epic victory. The Ghosts actor, 44, won the top spot and a bust of host Greg Davies' head as his reward after undergoing ten weeks of gruelling (and baffling) tasks against his co-stars and fellow comedians. Following behind Mathew's winning 169 points was comedian Stevie Martin with 154 points (who separately won the final episode). In third place was US star Jason Mantzoukas with 150 points, then Rosie Ramsey with 149 points and, coming in last, we had Greg's almost-wife Fatiha El-Ghorri with a respectable 141 points. 'I'm just really happy. I was having so much fun…' Mat told Metro about his victory ahead of the final episode. He joins an exclusive group of past Taskmaster winners including Ed Gamble, Katherine Ryan, Dara Ó Briain and Mae Martin. The Horrible Histories actor wowed audiences, sidekick little Alex Horne, his fellow competitors and, most importantly of all, the titular maestro himself, Greg, to secure the victory on the Channel 4 reality series. The actor has gone viral among the Taskmaster fandom (and beyond) more than once this season for his iconic behaviour – including one task where he and Alex transform from caterpillars into butterflies. Responding to the fan reaction, he said: 'It is lovely and with that one in particular (as with so many of them) I have to big up the team because they're such amazing artists that they take these videos you have and just do such a brilliant job. '[There's] no time, really, to prepare… I was like, 'oh, let's turn into butterflies'' and 'ten minutes later you're in these costumes filming them, and Chrissy, the makeup artist, made us look so funny. 'The brilliance of it is 10% the contestant and 90% the Taskmaster team, who are just a bunch of geniuses.' He added that 'if people knew how it was made, they'd be so much more in awe of that team just making it incredible.' Whether coming up with perfectly executed task prizes (like his fakeout with the biggest anticlimax) or proving his utmost commitment to the tasks no matter how absurd, the Yonderland star brought the skills needed to climb the ranks. For him, however, the most 'humiliating' moments were when had 'messed up' on a task without even realising. 'There was a task where I thought I had done triumphantly well, but I had inexplicably moved a wheelie bin, disqualifying myself in the process or when I shouted 'everybody' to lead along a sing along of a song that I wrote that took me one word over the word limit,' he explained. The Horrible Histories icon ended the final episode to raucous cheers from the live audience before going in for a passionate snog with his newly-acquired trophy. During the finale, the contestants had to bring in 'the thing most likely to make you do a double-take'; fill a box with yellow sand (with multiple catches of course); strike and hold a pose for 10 whole minutes and set up an unconventional drive-through service. Oh, and shoving a dangling carrot into a bucket without the use of your hands. So, business as usual. His victory comes at the end of a season that has been widely praised by viewers as the best season in a long time, if not ever – something he is thrilled about. 'Taskmaster season 19 is hands down the best season ngl I really don't want it to end,' spaceyeurotrash wrote on X. 'This series has been one of the best in ages,' jessatkinson92 echoed. 'Love this cast dearly, my favourite series,' ellasrhapsody declared. 'S19 has just been such a joy. Every new ep is the greatest episode so far, and the chemistry between the cast is just so excellent. I don't want this series to end,' sulcusandjirehs added. 'Season 19 Taskmaster is a stone cold classic already,' tarteaucitron2x echoed. 'Difficult to believe that this series of Taskmaster is almost over, arguably one of the best of the past three years,' bromley001 reflected. 'I love them so much pls can we have another 10 episodes I'm not ready for it to be over,' fern praised. 'That's just really gratifying,' Mat said about the widespread praise. 'You can never control how people perceive or receive anything. I prepared to have as much fun as I could, and then try and cover my ears and my eyes and just ignore whatever response there might be to it. 'So it's a huge relief when you dare to take a peek and find that people are saying nice things.' He added that he had initially felt 'slightly worried about feeling self-conscious' but was 'delighted [he] was able to get over it and enjoy it.' More Trending Although he joked: 'I still think my career going forward, as long as I haven't destroyed the possibility of people taking me seriously as an actor, will be in fiction characters.' There will be a 20th season landing on Channel 4 sometime later this year and the line-up has officially been confirmed. Breakthrough comic Ania Magliano, presenter Maisie Adam, Phil Ellis, Inside No, 9 star Reece Shearsmith and actor Sanjeev Bhaskar will join Greg and Alex for the new season. Taskmaster is available to stream on Channel 4. Got a story? Corrie character goes behind a loved one's back as a huge showdown is confirmed

When Dee-Dee Bailey (Channique Sterling-Brown) gave birth to her daughter Laila in Coronation Street she was determined to give the baby up for adoption. With Laila being the child of evil Joel Deering (Calum Lill), Dee-Dee had been convinced she wouldn't be able to cope with raising her. She only went through with the pregnancy and the birth because Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton)'s son Frankie needed a bone marrow transplant and they hoped Dee-Dee's baby would be a match. But everything changed after the baby was born. It was a traumatic experience for Dee-Dee and life-saving surgery for her after the birth left her unable to have any more children. With her brother James (Jason Callender) keen to adopt the baby – who was named Laila – this seemed like the perfect solution. But as Dee-Dee has seen more of Laila, she's grown more and more attached to her, even referring to her as 'my little girl' in a radio interview. Dee-Dee's Christian faith is very important to her, so recently she's realised that she would love Laila to be baptised. Unfortunately James isn't religious and told his sister that he didn't want Laila to have anything to do with the church. Dee-Dee ignored this and talked to Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) about arranging a christening. He said that James would have to give his permission, but when James refused to discuss the subject, Dee-Dee lied to Billy and said James was happy to go ahead. When Dee-Dee asked Alya (Sair Khan) to be Laila's godmother, Alya was troubled by the idea that the christening was going to be behind James's back. She reluctantly agreed, and the plans for the christening were finalised. More Trending The repercussions of this decision will become clear in upcoming episodes. The christening goes ahead, and Dee-Dee celebrates with Alya and Adam (Sam Robertson), Laila's godparents, and thanks Billy for a lovely service. How James reacts in the immediate aftermath of the christening remains to be seen, but it's not long before he tells Dee-Dee that he's spoken to the adoption team to get the ball rolling on becoming Laila's legal guardian. It's clear from that that he's not happy about such a huge decision as a christening being made without his consent and he's taking steps to make sure noting like that can happen again.
