Anganwadis get eco-friendly cooktops
Minister for Women, Child, and Tribal Welfare Gummidi Sandhyarani inaugurated the event alongside Vijayawada MP Kesineni Shivanath, MLA Gadde Rammohan, EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor, and Principal Secretary Suryakumari.
Sandhyarani emphasized the state's commitment to a plastic-free future under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's leadership. As part of the first phase, 11,400 eco-friendly induction stoves will be distributed to Anganwadi centres, improving safety and reducing pollution.
She promised better pay, gratuity benefits, and lower administrative burdens for Anganwadi workers and announced infrastructure upgrades, including Rs 1 lakh for owned centres and RO plants and toilets for rented ones.
Mini centres will be upgraded, and women will be offered free bus travel from August 15. MP Shivanath pledged support for 553 Anganwadi centres in NTR district, including construction of compound walls for 226 centres. MLA Rammohan hailed the role of teachers in nation-building.
EESL CEO Kapoor praised Andhra Pradesh's leadership in energy efficiency, attributing it to Naidu's vision.

A recent government survey has found large scale discrepancies in the registration of beneficiaries under the monthly pension scheme for women in distress, with nearly 60,000 of them found to be ineligible, according to officials aware of the matter. The government provides a monthly financial assistance of ₹ 2,500 under the Delhi Pension Scheme to Women in Distress (Widow Pension) to ensure social security to widows, divorced, separated, abandoned, deserted or destitute women older than 18 years of age who have no adequate means of subsistence and are poor, needy and vulnerable through direct benefit transfer. According to data, 350,000 beneficiaries were registered under the 2007 scheme. The names of all ineligible beneficiaries have now been deleted from the list, said a senior government official aware of the development. 'We have come to know that around 60,000 registered beneficiaries were not eligible for the pension -- many of them were not widowed but were registered for the pension. In some cases, widows got remarried but did not get their names removed. We have deleted the names of all such beneficiaries which will prevent the release of pensions to them,' said the official, asking not to be named. The official said that the breakup of the ineligible beneficiaries at the district level and according to the categories was not yet available. 'The department will take a decision on further action to be taken in the matter,' the official said. The government in November 2024launched a door-to-door verification drive under which Anganwadi workers visited residences of the beneficiaries across 11 revenue districts and verified their details. The scheme's eligibility criteria states that the annual income of a woman beneficiary should not exceed ₹ 1 lakh and the applicant should be the resident of Delhi for not less than five years. A department official said that the verification drive is a continuous process and is carried out regularly. 'The beneficiaries should come forward and inform the department through declarations when their status changes such as when a widow remarries so that the scheme benefits reach only the those in need,' said the official.

AP govt to upgrade 5,000 mini Anganwadis to boost childcare
Vijayawada: In a major boost to grassroots childcare infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to upgrade 5,000 mini Anganwadi centres into full-fledged main Anganwadi centres, bringing long-awaited relief to thousands of workers in the women and child welfare sector. Announcing the decision, State women and child welfare minister Gummidi Sandhyarani said that official orders will be issued shortly. The state currently has around 7,000 mini Anganwadi centres, which operate with only one worker and no support staff. With the upgrade, these 5,000 centres will now function with full Anganwadi teacher status for existing workers, who will receive regularised pay and be assigned duties as per main centre norms. The move is expected to significantly improve working conditions and enhance the delivery of nutrition and early education services to children and women in rural and semi-urban areas. "Anganwadi centres will take new shape in the coming days. We are strategically strengthening them. Upgrading mini Anganwadi centres will help thousands of needy," said minister Sandhyarani. In addition, the govt is planning to fill 5,000 Anganwadi aya (helper) posts, with a notification to be issued soon. Zoological Survey of India's 110-hour hackathon culminates in Kolkata grand finale

The event was graced by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav as Chief Guest, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), including Sushil Kumar Awasthi, Director General of Forests, Nameeta Prasad, Joint Secretary, and Ramesh Pandey, Additional Director General of Forests. The hackathon, which began on May 22 in honour of the International Day for Biodiversity, saw participation from 305 registered teams across the country. Following three progressive rounds—including regional showcases, a national-level screening, and semi-finals held in Pune on June 9—five teams from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, Jodhpur in Rajasthan, Digha in West Bengal, Solan in Himachal Pradesh, and Shillong in Meghalaya qualified to the final round in Kolkata. Welcoming the guests and participants, ZSI Director Dr Dhriti Banerjee said, 'You are already a winner. Innovation in conservation is not a competition to be won only once—it's a lifetime of commitment which needs to be honoured daily.' Applauding the finalists, she emphasised how the hackathon has served as a powerful platform to foster environmental solutions led by youth. MoEFCC Director General of Forests Awasthi echoed her sentiment, calling the event 'a good stage for us to move forward in the field of biodiversity'. He noted that hackathons like these serve as collaborative spaces for professionals and individuals to solve environmental challenges with creativity and determination. In his keynote address, Minister Bhupender Yadav lauded the uniqueness of each team's presentation and highlighted that most of the finalists hailed from remote corners of the country. He referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mission LiFE campaign launched on World Environment Day 2023, which outlines seven lifestyle changes—from saving water and energy to managing waste and promoting healthy living—as key to sustainable development. 'This country provides its youth with many opportunities,' he said, adding that their involvement in environmental innovation will be crucial to making the vision of a 'Vikasit Bharat' by 2047 come true.
