AP govt to upgrade 5,000 mini Anganwadis to boost childcare

Vijayawada: In a major boost to grassroots childcare infrastructure, the Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to upgrade 5,000 mini Anganwadi centres into full-fledged main Anganwadi centres, bringing long-awaited relief to thousands of workers in the women and child welfare sector. Announcing the decision, State women and child welfare minister Gummidi Sandhyarani said that official orders will be issued shortly. The state currently has around 7,000 mini Anganwadi centres, which operate with only one worker and no support staff. With the upgrade, these 5,000 centres will now function with full Anganwadi teacher status for existing workers, who will receive regularised pay and be assigned duties as per main centre norms. The move is expected to significantly improve working conditions and enhance the delivery of nutrition and early education services to children and women in rural and semi-urban areas. "Anganwadi centres will take new shape in the coming days. We are strategically strengthening them. Upgrading mini Anganwadi centres will help thousands of needy," said minister Sandhyarani. In addition, the govt is planning to fill 5,000 Anganwadi aya (helper) posts, with a notification to be issued soon. Anganwadis get eco-friendly cooktops

VIJAYAWADA: Marking World Environment Day, the Women Development and Child Welfare Department of Andhra Pradesh launched a massive tree-planting drive in Vijayawada, aiming to plant one crore saplings statewide. The initiative, targeted at Anganwadi teachers, also introduced eco-friendly cooking measures to promote sustainability. Minister for Women, Child, and Tribal Welfare Gummidi Sandhyarani inaugurated the event alongside Vijayawada MP Kesineni Shivanath, MLA Gadde Rammohan, EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor, and Principal Secretary Suryakumari. Sandhyarani emphasized the state's commitment to a plastic-free future under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's leadership. As part of the first phase, 11,400 eco-friendly induction stoves will be distributed to Anganwadi centres, improving safety and reducing pollution. She promised better pay, gratuity benefits, and lower administrative burdens for Anganwadi workers and announced infrastructure upgrades, including Rs 1 lakh for owned centres and RO plants and toilets for rented ones. Mini centres will be upgraded, and women will be offered free bus travel from August 15. MP Shivanath pledged support for 553 Anganwadi centres in NTR district, including construction of compound walls for 226 centres. MLA Rammohan hailed the role of teachers in nation-building. EESL CEO Kapoor praised Andhra Pradesh's leadership in energy efficiency, attributing it to Naidu's vision.

Minister promises to develop infrastructure in tribal villages

Vijayawada: Minister for Tribal Welfare, WGC' Women and Child Welfare Gummidi Sandhyarani stated that efforts are being made to develop education, healthcare, drinking water, and roads in all tribal villages across the State. The minister conducted a review meeting on Friday with officials from nine Integrated Tribal Development Agencies (ITDAs) and other line departments at the Tribal Welfare Department office here. Speaking at a press conference organised on the occasion, the Minister said that steps are being taken to ensure basic infrastructure in all schools by June when schools reopen. With special initiative from Minister Nara Lokesh, Rs 156 crore has been sanctioned, and work has already begun. 'Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has directed the provision of drinking water to people in over 4,000 tribal villages, and drinking water has already been provided to the majority of these villages,' she said. The minister noted that ICDS (Integrated Child Development Services) programmes are being integrated with activities in tribal areas. Steps have been taken to provide nutritious food to children in tribal regions. Although doctors have been appointed in tribal areas, they often do not reside there. To address this, appointments will be made to ensure doctors stay in these areas, providing better healthcare to tribals. The minister stated that skill development courses will be offered to tribal youth to create employment opportunities. Birth waiting halls have been set up for pregnant women, and post-delivery, mothers and newborns are safely transported home via the Mother-Child Express vehicle. Over 2,000 jobs are available for tribals in the Mega DSC, which will improve the lives of many tribal youth. The state has nine ITDAs, but Vijayawada and Nellore ITDAs cannot officially represent tribal areas due to the absence of tribal populations.
