
'Extremely difficult to swallow': developer's frustration at decision to preserve urban bushland
The state government has declared it wants to save the vast majority of a parcel of bushland on Newcastle's outskirts for conservation rather than housing.
In a landmark decision that went against an Independent Planning Commission recommendation, only a small section of 505 Minmi Road at Fletcher will be built on.
Under the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure's rezoning determination released on Friday, about 3.6 hectares (just under 15 per cent) of the 26-hectare site has been zoned for residential use.
It represents a reduction of 9.7 hectares from what was originally proposed.
It is estimated that the rezoned land could be used to build 35 to 40 lots compared to the 180 lots originally proposed.
The area zoned for environmental conservation has increased from 12.98 hectares to 22.7 hectares.
Peter Durbin, who bought the site 23 years ago with a view to developing it, expressed "disappointment and frustration" at the determination, which he said flew in the face of the state government's push to build more housing.
"We requested a six-week extension from the department so we could apply under Freedom of Information to get the koala habitat data from the council. We believe the koala habitat is a great distance away from our property, but obviously, we can't prove that until we see that (data)," he said.
"The council denied our application, and so did the department. To request a six-week extension so that we get an opportunity to use the documents that have put a nail in the coffin after 23 years doesn't seem like much of a request to me, but they denied it. We find that extremely difficult to swallow."
Residents who have been campaigning for the site to be used as a green corridor and City of Newcastle celebrated the department's determination.
"This is a great day for urban conservation in Newcastle, but it is also the final milestone for the Green Corridor Coalition, which set itself the very ambitious task of connecting together all national parks in the Lower Hunter to form the 65-kilometre-long Stockton Bight to Watagans Regional Biodiversity Corridor, with the regional park corridor being a prominent part of our 2003 vision statement," lead community campaigner Brian Purdue said.
Mr Durbin said he was considering the implications of the rezoning on his plans for the site.
In addition, he had written to Planning Minister Paul Scully to express his concern about the rezoning process; however, he had not received a response.

'Unaccountable organisation flush with taxpayers' money': Senator responds to Sky News investigation into ABC's 'ridiculous' DEI policies
One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has criticised the ABC's internal diversity policies, accusing the public broadcaster of wasting taxpayer money on 'ridiculous' identity-based targets instead of prioritising quality journalism. A Sky News Freedom of Information investigation revealed on Friday the ABC expects its journalists to meet sweeping diversity targets across race, gender, culture and disability in news content. Under the broadcaster's '50:50 Equality Project', reporters have been expected to assess news stories and choose talent based on a range of diversity markers and log the data in a centralised system to be reviewed at editorial meetings. 'This DEI nonsense is becoming ridiculous,' Ms Hanson told Sky News on Friday. 'This is exactly what happens when you have an unaccountable organisation flush with taxpayers' money it does nothing to truly earn. The ABC needs to be reined in. 'Talent for news interviews should obviously be based on relevance and expertise, not arbitrary characteristics like race, gender or disability,' she said. 'Australian taxpayers are being forced to pay for a sub-standard news service that prioritises identity politics over quality and objective reporting, and the ABC's audience is deserting the public broadcaster as a result.' Ms Hanson also accused the ABC of hypocrisy, claiming its approach to inclusion rarely extended to politically conservative Australians. 'It's also fair to say the ABC's idea of 'inclusion' will rarely if ever include white conservative men and women – particularly redheads!' The internal documents obtained by Sky News under a FOI request revealed that journalists had been expected to estimate the identity status of talent based on how they look, sound, or what names they have. ABC staff were then told to enter that data into a central application for team-wide analysis. Targets include 50 per cent women, 15 per cent culturally diverse people, 3.4 per cent indigenous representation and 8 per cent people with disability. Staff have been encouraged to reflect on whether they were achieving sufficient diversity and were provided with discussion prompts such as 'what could we do better/differently next time?' and 'what has been our biggest win this week?' Executive Director of the Institute of Public Affairs Scott Hargreaves said the revelations proved the ABC was out of step with its obligations as a public broadcaster. 'ABC management simply do not get it. Warping the news the ABC presents to meet woke DEI goals is completely inconsistent with its charter,' he said. 'DEI is a cancer that eats out organisations from within by distracting it from its actual purpose and tying up staff with pointless tasks,' Mr Hargreaves added. He argued that the ABC's obsession with identity had replaced its former commitment to newsworthiness and balance. 'The definition of news is what is of interest to the public and what is important. DEI goals for representation have nothing to do with achieving this aim," he said. 'The ABC is no longer an institution of cultural importance in Australia as it once was. Too often the ABC fails to represent the diverse views of the community. 'While the ABC's taxpayer funding increases every year, its ratings continue to fall. It demonstrates the deep structural and cultural problems at the taxpayer funded broadcaster.'

‘The real tragedy': Shadow health minister Anne Ruston says youth pushed to crime networks for vapes under Labor
The opposition has accused the Albanese government of driving young people into the arms of organised crime after new data revealed less than one per cent of vapes are purchased legally. Documents obtained by The Daily Telegraph revealed on Monday that one in every 1,686 vape sales occur legally through a pharmacy—about 0.06 per cent. Organised crime syndicates have been importing vapes, of which more than 10 million are sold nationally every month on the black market. Shadow health minister Anne Ruston told Sky News that the government's restrictive model of only allowing vape sales in pharmacies created the booming black market. 'We told the government when they put this policy forward that it wasn't going to work,' Ms Ruston said on Monday. 'The government knew right from the get-go that the prescription-only model wasn't working. 'The real tragedy of all this is the fact that young Australians particularly (are being) forced into the hands of organised crime to access vapes. 'Organised crime is benefiting from the failure of this government's policy.' Figures obtained via Freedom of Information showed an average of 5,932 vapes were sold legally, compared to more than 10 million sold illegally every month. Asked what the opposition's approach to vape regulation would be, Ms Ruston admitted it did not yet have one. 'We've made it very clear that all policies that we took to the election that we are intending to look at and make sure that they are fit for purpose,' she said. Nationals leader David Littleproud, who conceded that he had previously supported a prescription-only model, called for a 'regulated' model of vape sales. 'I admit that I got it wrong … on a prohibition model around prescriptions for vaping,' Mr Littleproud told Sky News on Monday. 'We've got to get to a regulated model. Look what's worked—what worked with tobacco back in the 90s was a regulated model." Mr Littleproud said by regulating and taxing vape products, the government could reinvest some of that money into treating health issues caused by smoking.
