Arab League Reaffirms Commitment to Drug Prevention on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Mohamed Mandour
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26, by reaffirming its commitment to advancing coordinated Arab efforts in combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
In a statement, the General Secretariat emphasized the significance of the occasion as a global call to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of drug use on individuals and communities. It highlighted the importance of preventive measures and cross-border cooperation to achieve the shared goal of a drug-free world.
The statement noted that the Council of Arab Health Ministers, during its 62nd ordinary session held in Geneva in 2025, adopted a resolution aimed at unifying Arab efforts to tackle the evolving drug threat. The resolution included a plan to address emerging patterns of prescription and psychotropic drug misuse, incorporating a report from the UAE's Ministry of Interior on controlled substances and aligning with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime's strategy on synthetic drugs.
Furthermore, the Council of the League of Arab States, at the Summit level, endorsed Resolution 920 during its 34th ordinary session held in Iraq on May 17, 2025, approving the establishment of an Arab Centre for Combating Drugs.
The General Secretariat stressed its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3—ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all—and to reducing the health and social burdens linked to substance and alcohol abuse. It called for increased awareness, stronger healthcare and social support systems, and better coordination among Arab nations.

Qatar sees 'window of opportunity' for Gaza truce: Spokesman - War on Gaza

Qatar's foreign ministry said on Friday that mediators are engaging with both Israel and Hamas to build on momentum from this week's ceasefire with Iran and push for a truce in the Gaza Strip. 'If we don't utilise this window of opportunity and this momentum, it's an opportunity lost amongst many in the near past. We don't want to see that again,' spokesman Majed al-Ansari told AFP. The Qatari statement came shortly after US President Donald Trump said a ceasefire in Gaza could be reached 'within the next week'. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said: 'We think within the next week we're going to get a ceasefire. We're working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of.' The United States brokered a temporary ceasefire during the final days of Joe Biden's presidency, with involvement from Trump's incoming administration. That agreement collapsed in March when Israel resumed its war on Gaza, launching a wave of air and ground attacks that killed more than 400 people in the first days alone. Since then, Israeli bombardments have continued across the Gaza Strip. According to Gaza's health ministry, 6,008 Palestinians have been killed and 20,591 wounded since Israel resumed strikes on 18 March. The total death toll since October 2023 now stands at 56,331, with 132,632 injured. *This story was edited by Ahram Online. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Congratulations to Egypt

Elham Aboul Fateh A major victory for the Egyptian parliament was achieved this week. Egypt assumed the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PAUfM) . Egypt was elected unanimously by the member states, who voted for MP Mohamed Abou El-Enein, Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, to assume the presidency of the Mediterranean Parliament. This victory is the result of Egypt's foreign policy and the world's growing confidence in the wisdom of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who was able to restore Egypt's regional and international position with steady steps and a clear vision. MP Mohamed Abou El-Enein emphasized this in his speech after assuming the presidency, where he spoke about President Sisi's wisdom, leadership, and wise leadership that has restored Egypt's leadership in its region and the world, and about the major role played by the Egyptian Parliament in its current session, headed by Counselor Dr. Hanafi El-Gebali, and the achievements made during the recent period. He presented a comprehensive roadmap for cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean, based on the principle of equality and equivalence, far from conditional aid or unbalanced relations, with an ambitious vision that takes relations from words to implementation, from crises to practical solutions, in the spirit of true cooperation. I was there and I felt proud as an Egyptian, as my heart was filled with pride for my country since it gained the world's respect and appreciation. I saw looks of respect directed at Egypt, not only for its historical weight, but also for its role and its plans for the future. Egypt's selection to assume the presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (PAUfM), with the unanimous support of 38 countries, confirms that it remains the cornerstone of stability in the region and the natural bridge linking the North to the South, and Europe to the Arab world and Africa. MP Mohamed Abou El-Enein, the new President of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliament, is a highly experienced parliamentarian with a long history of international engagement. He possesses a capacity for influence, dialogue, and joint construction. This is what made his selection widely welcomed and appreciated. The selection of Egypt is a victory for its policies, institutions, political leaders, and people. Congratulations to Egypt. God bless Egypt. read more Analysis- Turkey Has 0 Regional Allies... Why?
