Netflix admits it used AI to make ‘amazing' scene in hit TV show – but did YOU spot it?

NETFLIX has admitted to using generative AI to create visual effects in a new original TV show - are you able to spot it?
The streaming giant confirmed the move in its latest earnings call, with co-CEO Ted Sarandos saying they traded in traditional VFX for generative AI in one scene.

Doing so was not only faster, but much cheaper than outsourcing the shot to a traditional VFX house, Engadget first reported.
Creators of the sci-fi Netflix original, The Eternaut, wanted a collapsing building sequence to anchor a key moment in the story.
But to detail such a scene would have required VFX that was apparently out of budget for the Argentine post-apocalyptic drama.
"Using AI-powered tools, they were able to achieve an amazing result with remarkable speed," Sarandos said.

"In fact, that VFX sequence was completed 10 times faster than it could have been completed with... traditional VFX tools and workflows."
Sarandos added that the shot "just wouldn't have been feasible for a show on that budget."
Generative AI, or Gen AI, is a type of artificial intelligence that can create text, images, music, and videos from prompts given to it by humans.
This content can be in all kinds of style - cartoonish, or even hyper-realistic, and therefore difficult to distinguish from real life.
Netflix has reportedly got plans to roll out AI-generated adverts for ad-tier subscribers in 2026.
The company is also testing a new search feature powered by OpenAI models, according to Bloomberg.

But The Eternaut marks a milestone, becoming "the very first Gen AI final footage to appear on screen in a Netflix original series or film," Sarandos said.
The shift towards generative AI is already happening within Hollywood.
Films like 10-time Oscar nominee The Brutalist and Late Night with the Devil faced backlash for even light AI involvement.
The issue is already on the radar of SAG-AFTRA, a union whose members went on strike against AI use in video games last summer.
"The video game industry generates billions of dollars in profit annually. The driving force behind that success is the creative people who design and create those games," SAG-AFTRA president, Fran Drescher, said at the time.
"That includes the SAG-AFTRA members who bring memorable and beloved game characters to life, and they deserve and demand the same fundamental protections as performers in film, television, streaming and music: fair compensation and the right of informed consent for the AI use of their faces, voices and bodies."

Netflix fans will spot a familiar face in the latest episode of its Trainwreck documentary series Netflix enthusiasts will recognise a familiar face in the latest Trainwreck documentary series. The anthology of Netflix's Trainwreck revisits some of the most terrifying and peculiar incidents that once ruled mainstream media. The series and films, from their viewpoint, delve into everything from disastrous festivals and political scandals to and horrific cruises and reality TV catastrophes. Today's episode (July 22) was the Trainwreck P. I. Moms, which takes viewers back to 2010 and a reality TV show about a private investigation agency run by soccer mums. Commissioned by Lifetime Networks, the mums were a group of mothers who trained as private investigators for Chris Butler and it was set to air on TV. The group investigated everything from exposing unfaithful husbands to insurance scams. However, the show never made it to air, reports the Mirror US. In the documentary, cast and crew reveal the reality TV show and how Chris Butler was subsequently arrested on multiple felony charges. At the conclusion of Trainwreck, it states: "On May 4 2012, Chris Butler pleaded guilty to selling drugs, extortion, robbery, and planting illegal wiretaps. He was sentenced to eight years in prison." According to Netflix's Tudum: "In 2010, Lifetime commissions a reality TV series about a private investigation agency staffed by soccer moms. Everyone is convinced they have the next big hit on their hands, until the production crew starts to notice something is off. "The moms' investigations keep falling apart, leading to allegations of sabotage. At the same time, a mysterious informant accuses the agency's boss of running an illegal drug operation on the side, abetted by a corrupt cop. For both the TV series and the criminals dealing drugs, it is only a matter of time before things fall disastrously apart." Viewers will recognise a familiar face in the latest episode of Trainwreck. Actor Carl Marino, who was alleged to have "ruined" the show before it had the chance to get off the ground, makes an appearance. But where might viewers have seen Carl Marino before? Carl Marino portrayed a young Joe Kenda on Homicide Hunter. Homicide Hunter follows Lt Joe Kenda who spent 23 years in the police department where he caught criminals and solved hundreds of homicide investigations - and he shares his memories on the show. However, fans will likely recognise Carl Marino from the Trainwreck documentary. One fan expressed their surprise on Reddit, saying: "I'm shocked and disappointed in Joe Kenda."

The FBI were unable to investigate the 'photo of Amy Bradley' found on a sex worker website despite its striking resemblance to her and her family's desperate plea for action Netflix's latest true-crime documentary Amy Bradley is Missing has been a massive hit with viewers since its release on July 16, quickly rising to second place in the UK's top TV show charts on the streaming platform. The three-part docu-series explores the chilling and unresolved disappearance of 23-year-old Amy Bradley, who vanished while on a Caribbean cruise with her family in 1998. Amy was traveling on board a Royal Caribbean cruise ship with her parents, Ron and Iva and her brother, Brad, when she went missing en route to Curaçao. She was last seen in the early hours of March 23 1998, resting on the balcony of the family's cabin. When her dad checked on her shortly after sunrise, she was gone - and has never been found. Now, 27 years later, Netflix revisits the mysterious circumstances surrounding her disappearance and the persistent efforts by her family to uncover the truth. The documentary summarises all the major theories that have emerged over the decades, including the most haunting one: that Amy was abducted and trafficked. One of the most significant revelations in the docuseries centres around a photograph discovered in 2005 on a sex worker's website thought to be based out of the Caribbean. The image bears a striking resemblance to Amy, so much so that her family took the discovery public and appeared on the Dr. Phil show in a desperate bid to find their daughter. "All I could keep thinking is, 'Is that my daughter?'" Amy's mother Iva says in the documentary. "We all looked at it - the nose, the chin, and the hair - it took my breath away." The FBI took then took the lead on analysing the image. An agent close to the case was interviewed in the series, and confirmed that forensic analysts had determined that it could very well be Amy. Investigators examined everything from the woman's pose, which was a specific stance that would have hidden all of Amy's identifiable tattoos - like a Gecko lizard on her navel, or sun on her lower back - to the bed frame in the image in an effort to track its origin. Speaking about the photo found on the sex worker site, co-director of the docuseries, Ari Mark told The Hollywood Reporter: "That part really made us scratch our heads, too." He went on to add that it is 'hard to ignore is how seriously the FBI took that photo.' Mark adds: "They really did chase that down. They analysed the bed frame, tried to figure out where it was made. They sent an operative down there to actually scope it out. And they did look into that website, and they brought in that trafficking expert - it's hard to ignore." However, despite the extensive investigation, authorities were unable to trace the photo's origins or determine where it was taken, as the website's IP address could not be located. The director went on to claim that "from the FBI standpoint, they've exhausted everything." In 2010, Amy was declared legally dead in absentia. Yet, her case remains open, and the FBI continues to maintain a missing persons page with age-progressed images of what Amy might look like today. The page also states that a $25,000 reward is offered for information leading to her discovery, with the FBI still looking for tips from the public.

I'm not crying you are," posted one fan, as another said: "Trying to cope with not seeing Linda for several weeks now that she's gone on her cruise. I'm going to miss her so bloody much." A third emotional fan penned: "It's official, Linda has left the Vic and has gone on holiday for weeks now. Her goodbye to Trace and Elaine saying she's proud of her. I'm so emotional." Others were convinced that there'd be trouble waiting for Linda upon her been revealed that Max Branning (Jake Wood) will be making a return later this year, and fans think he'll be back in the Square waiting for Linda upon her return. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter during the episode, one fan penned: "Why do I get the feeling that Max will be back on the Square by the time she comes back to Walford. Linda took a massive risk telling Oscar about Annie - I just hope Max's return doesn't trigger another relapse as Linda has done so well to stay sober."
