Revenge killings: Vizag man gets death penalty for killing six of a family

Time of India27-06-2025
Visakhapatnam: The IV additional district and sessions court in Visakhapatnam on Friday sentenced 50-year-old Battina Appalaraju to death for killing six members of a family, including two children, in a revenge killing in April 2021.
The incident took place at Yathapeta locality in V Juttada village under Pendurthi police station limits in Vizag city. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict.
Six members of the family, including three women and two children, were hacked to death by their neighbour Battina Appalaraju with a hunting scythe over a personal feud in the early hours of April 15, 2021.
Appalaraju and Bamidi Vijay Kiran, neighbours, had a longstanding enmity.
Appalaraju decided to eliminate Vijay Kiran and his family.
The victims were Vijay Kiran's father Bamidi Ramana (61), Kiran's wife Bamidi Usha Rani (31), Kiran's son B Uday Nandan (3), Kiran's daughter B Lishitha (six months), Allu Ramadevi (47), mother of Usha Rani, and Nakettlu Aruna (46), a relative of Usha Rani. Vijay Kiran and his elder son escaped as they were not present at the location during the murders.
Appalaraju's daughter Parvathi had a close relationship with Vijay Kiran, which Appalaraju perceived as an insult.
He lodged a case against Vijay Kiran at Pendurthi police station in 2018. Since then, Appalaraju and his brother developed a grudge against Vijay Kiran's family.
Later, Vijay Kiran and his family moved to Vijayawada in search of livelihood. In April 2021, they returned to V Juttada as Vijay Kiran's uncle's son Sai's marriage was fixed for May 13, 2021.
Knowing that Vijay Kiran's family had returned, Appalaraju, who had been waiting to take revenge, hacked six family members to death in the early hours on April 15 while they were asleep.
Additional public prosecutor grade-I, Metta Khajana Rao said that judge M Nageswara Rao of the IV additional district and sessions court awarded capital punishment to Appalaraju after convicting him under IPC Section 302 for murder and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.

Narcotics, coercion and abuse: Now 'Drug Jihad' surfaces in Bhopal

Bhopal: In a sweeping crackdown that has rattled Bhopal's underbelly, the Crime Branch has unearthed a sprawling drug and exploitation network operating across the city's social hotspots. The arrests of Yasin Malik and his uncle Shahwar—both caught with MDMA and an unlicensed pistol after a high-speed chase—have exposed a disturbing nexus of narcotics, coercion, and abuse. Investigators recovered 22 grams of MDMA, two vehicles, and a country-made firearm from the duo. But it was the contents of Yasin's mobile phone that deepened the gravity of the case -- over twenty videos allegedly depicting drugged young women being sexually exploited and boys subjected to violent beatings. Police officials, while confirming the authenticity of the footage, noted that none of the victims have yet come forward, complicating the legal pursuit. Yasin, son of known criminal Mukhtar Malik, already faces multiple cases across city police stations. His arrest, along with Shahwar's, is believed to be part of a larger supply chain targeting college students and gym-goers. MDMA was often introduced as a party enhancer or fitness supplement, distributed freely at first to hook users. Once addicted, victims were reportedly coerced into acting as couriers or recruiters—fueling what officials describe as a 'chain-marketing' model of drug proliferation. In a parallel operation, the Crime Branch arrested Saifuddin and Ashu alias Shahrukh from Govindpura, seizing 15.14 grams of MD powder, a scooter, and a mobile phone valued at approximately Rs 3 lakh. Saifuddin, who had been absconding with a Rs 5,000 bounty on his head, was allegedly active in Bhopal's club circuit, using parties to lure young women into drug use and then leveraging them to expand the network. The racket's reach extended into gyms, clinics, and lounges, where MDMA was peddled under the guise of weight-loss solutions or high-paying job offers. Victims were drawn in with promises of transformation and status, only to be trapped in cycles of addiction and exploitation. Police have initiated a wider probe into establishments suspected of facilitating drug distribution. Licenses may be revoked for venues found complicit, and several drug-dependent youth have already been referred to rehabilitation centers. Authorities have appealed to parents and community leaders to remain vigilant and proactive in shielding children from the lure of synthetic drugs. As custodial remand continues for the accused, Bhopal's Crime Branch is working to dismantle the entire network—one that has turned aspirations for fitness and glamour into a pipeline of dependency and abuse. The investigation remains on-going, with more arrests expected in the coming days.

Chhattisgarh BJP Leader Loses ₹41 Lakh To Woman Con Artist Promising Top Govt Post

Last Updated: BJP leader Santosh Kataria from Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district was allegedly duped of Rs 41.3 lakh by Kajal Joshi and Rajiv Soni, who promised him a top govt job. A BJP leader from Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district was allegedly duped of Rs 41.3 lakh by two individuals who claimed they could help him secure the top position in the state's mineral development corporation, police said on Wednesday. A case of cheating has been filed against two individuals, identified as Kajal Joshi, alias Komal Ingule, and Rajiv Soni, at Keshkal police station based on the complaint of Santosh Kataria (64), a police official said while speaking to PTI. Kataria, a core group member of the BJP's Kondagaon unit, alleged that Soni, a Raipur resident, had introduced him to Kajal Joshi, as per the FIR. Kataria earlier served as the president of the BJP's North Bastar unit when the state was part of undivided Madhya Pradesh. On August 12 last year, Joshi contacted him over the phone, claiming she lived in Nagpur and Delhi and was an office-bearer of the BJP and RSS. She also said she had strong connections with Union ministers and ministers in the Chhattisgarh government, Kataria stated in his police complaint filed on July 20. Joshi allegedly promised to help him become chairman of the mineral development corporation in return for Rs 3 crore, Kataria said in his complaint. 'I told her I could not arrange such a huge amount immediately, but I could give Rs 20 lakh. On August 20, 2024, I paid Rs 20 lakh in cash to Kajal Joshi in Delhi. On September 19, I transferred Rs 1.3 lakh via WhatsApp using the QR code provided by her. In October 2024, I handed over another Rs 20 lakh in cash to Joshi and Soni at a Hotel in Raipur," he said. When his name did not appear in the appointment list for Chhattisgarh corporations and boards, Kataria tried to reach Joshi, but she stopped responding to his calls, he told police. In his complaint, Kataria added that he later contacted BJP colleagues and was told there was no worker or leader named Kajal Joshi. The two accused have been charged under sections 318 (4) (cheating) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is ongoing, the official said. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 19:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Row over appointment of Vikas Barala as Assistant Advocate General

A controversy has erupted over the appointment of Haryana Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha member Subhash Barala's son, Vikas Barala, as Assistant Advocate General (AAG) by the Haryana government. Mr. Barala is currently out on bail in a case involving charges of abduction, wrongful restraint and stalking of a woman. According to official records, Mr. Barala was appointed through a government notification issued on July 18. The Congress, in a post on its official handle on social media platform X, objected to the appointment. 'See the shamelessness of Haryana's BJP government. The government has appointed Vikas Barala, who attempted molestation and kidnapping, as AAG in the Haryana government. This means a criminal who misbehaved with girls will now represent the government in court,' the party said. 'Even before this, the BJP has been promoting those who harass women, commit rape and murder. This is just the next chapter,' it further said. The case dates back to August 5, 2017, when Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar allegedly followed and attempted to stop a woman, who was returning home from Chandigarh to Panchkula. The woman, a disc jockey and daughter of a senior IAS officer in the Haryana government at the time, had lodged a complaint leading to the duo's arrest. Initially, they were released on bail after being booked under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. Following public outrage and criticism over the handling of the case, including accusations of dilution of charges, the police later re-arrested the accused on August 9. Sections 365 and 511 of the IPC (attempt to abduct) were added to the existing FIR. Speaking to The Hindu, the woman's father, now retired, said that only the prosecution witnesses had deposed so far in the case, even after eight years. He added that the defence was yet to present its witnesses and evidence. He declined to comment on Mr. Barala's appointment as AAG. Mr. Subhash Barala could not be reached for a response. His personal assistant said he was attending the ongoing Parliament session.
