Taika Waititi's Akira adaptation is no more; Warner Bros lets go of the movie rights, starting a new bidding war
Akira, the iconic 1982 manga series by Katsuhiro Otomo that was adapted into a cult classic 1988 anime film, has been struggling to get a Hollywood live-action adaptation off the ground for decades. The process has faced another setback with Warner Bros relinquishing the film rights, effectively killing Taika Waititi's attempt to adapt the series.
After the 1988 film's smash success, Hollywood was quick to take an interest in Katsuhiro Otomo's intellectual property, with Warner Bros acquiring the rights from Sony Pictures in 2002 and making multiple attempts at getting a film off the ground. The most recent of these was Taika Waititi's, with him wanting to remain faithful to the original manga plotline and cast Asian-American actors in the leading roles.

With Warner Bros relinquishing Akira's film rights, they've reverted back to the manga's publisher, Kodansha. This has, per the Hollywood reporter, caught the attention of several Hollywood studios and streaming services aiming to acquire the rights for themselves.
The original manga's plotline followed Tetsuo, a teenager in post-apocalyptic Tokyo who's part of a biker gang with his childhood friend and gang leader Kaneda. Tetsuo discovers he has world-ending telekinesis abilities, which brings him to Kaneda's attention as he ropes Tetsuo into his own schemes.

While there have been several ambitious attempts at getting an Akira Hollywood adaptation off the ground, none have truly taken off. After Warner Bros acquired the film rights to Akira in 2002, the studio hired several directors to work on the Akira adaptation, with none of them sticking around long enough to see the project to its completion.
Stephen Norrington was the first director hired by Warner Bros, but he ultimately fell out of favor after his 2003 release The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen bombed both critically and commercially.
Next came Ruari Robinson, who planned to split Akira into two films so that he could cover the entire manga's storyline. He would've changed the story's location to New York and prominently featured Asian-American characters, but he eventually departed the project in 2009.
Next came the Hughes brothers, who aimed to market the film to a PG-13 audience, with them departing the project in 2011. Jaume Collet-Sera was assigned to direct the next iteration of the Akira film in October of that year, only to depart the project in 2017.
Taika Waititi was the last director to attempt an Akira adaptation under the aegis of Warner Bros, with him being confirmed as a director in 2019. However, Waititi's involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other projects kept delaying the production until Warner Bros relinquished their rights to the IP altogether.

Jonathan Owens wins hearts with impactful youth camp as Simone Biles quietly supports from the sidelines
Jonathan Owens youth camp impact (Image credits: Instagram/X) NFL safety Jonathan Owens returned to his roots, not to be celebrated, but to give back. His free youth football camp, hosted at his alma mater, wasn't about fame or fanfare—it was about presence, purpose, and passing on lessons he once needed. As dozens of kids ran drills, Owens ran with them. The impact wasn't loud, but it was deeply felt. From NFL player to on-field mentor What separated this camp from countless others wasn't the structure—it was the man leading it. Owens didn't just oversee the stations; he coached every step, often sprinting beside young athletes, guiding form, offering pointers, and encouraging effort. Instagram stories captured him 'instructing with his own hands,' reinforcing that his involvement wasn't symbolic—it was sincere. Parents and onlookers quickly took to social media to express their gratitude. Not with vague praise, but with heartfelt thanks. Owens didn't outsource inspiration; he delivered it personally, with a focus on humility, resilience, and accountability. This wasn't a performance—it was mentorship in motion. Her presence was quiet but meaningful, helping underscore that the camp wasn't about celebrity. American RJ Michelle Mishelae Proctor reflected on the event with joy, writing: '@joowens camp today was amazingly organized and fun for the youth! Thanks for giving back to the kids! Loved seeing wifey @simonebiles showing support! Y'all are too cute.' The couple's team spirit kept the focus where it belonged—on the children. Families applaud Owens for personal investment, not just participation Praise poured in from parents whose children left with more than just goodie bags—they left with belief. One parent shared, 'Thanks for allowing my three boys to be a part of your camp today. They had a great time and learned valuable skills! Continued blessings for you @jowens @cbchighschool.' Another echoed the sentiment in simple but powerful words: 'Thank you @jowens for giving back to the youth today…my kid enjoyed it.' ‘Thunderbolts' OTT release date OUT — When and where to stream Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan film
Marvel fans have a new reason to celebrate as 'Thunderbolts', the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is finally heading to OTT platforms. The film, which was later on changed to 'The New Avengers' in select marketing circles, will be available for digital purchase and rental beginning July 1 on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, according to USA Today. The release comes almost two months after the film's theatrical debut on May 2, and continues Marvel Studios' recent trend of diving into grittier narratives and complex character arcs. This marks a notable pivot from the traditional superhero formula, offering fans a darker, emotionally layered team-up story. 'Thunderbolts' brought together a lineup of lesser-explored but fan-favourite characters from across the MCU in a high-stakes, morally grey storyline. According to the official synopsis, 'the film follows a group of anti-heroes who find themselves caught in a perilous mission orchestrated by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The team must navigate treacherous personal histories while attempting to survive a deadly trap and determine whether redemption or ruin lies ahead.' The cast features Sebastian Stan reprising his role as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Lewis Pullman as the formidable Sentry. The film also stars Olga Kurylenko, Wendell Pierce, and Chris Bauer in significant supporting roles. Directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Robot & Frank) and written by Eric Pearson (Black Widow), 'Thunderbolts' represents a tonal shift for Marvel — blending emotional drama with psychological tension and morally ambiguous missions. While reactions to the theatrical release were mixed, with praise for performances and criticism of pacing, the OTT debut gives viewers another chance to engage with the film and reassess its place in the evolving MCU landscape. Even though the film was the eighth-highest-grossing film of 2025, it severely underperformed at the box-office, earning $381 million against a production budget of $180 million. The film was later on rebranded as 'The New Avengers', signaling that the asterisk at the end of the film's initial name was hinting at the change all along.
