The Blind Date reboot already sounds like it's trying too hard
Paul O'Grady briefly revived the classic dating show for two series in 2017 on Channel 5, but it never managed to set the stars alight and remains a largely forgotten jewel in his showbiz crown.
Because it was Cilla's version that captured the zeitgeist of dating shows in the 90s and early 00s.
Her enthusiasm and unbridled camp was totally mesmerising to me.
Teamed with family-friendly sass from 'our Graham' and a format of one singleton picking a date from a panel of three strangers hiding behind a wall that never got tired, I loved Blind Date more than I've ever loved any of the countless dating shows that followed.

Once a date had been chosen, they'd be whisked away to a holiday selected by producers, which ranged from two days basking in golden sands and luxury in Antigua to hiking in Bognor Regis.
Now, Disney+ has confirmed its Blind Date reboot. I was originally ecstatic, until I realised it actually sounds nothing at all like the original.
In an announcement on Monday, the streaming service said: 'The new series will begin in a secret location, where contestants must choose between three potential suitors, hidden from view behind the legendary Blind Date wall.'
So far so good.
'With a host of unique, innovative and head-turning format twists, our daters will see if forever love can truly grow as they spend the summer living together but potential new partners are always lurking behind the wall…'
That might sound good – but it doesn't sound like Blind Date.
Essentially it's Married At First Sight on an island, which sounds like a carbon copy of Davina McCall's upcoming BBC dating show, Stranded on Honeymoon Island.
Maya Jama is also rumoured to be presenting — which presumably means she's leaving Love Island to front… almost exactly the same show but with a Disney budget and paycheck.
But who's it for ? Everything about its new format sounds unoriginal and unappealing to the fans who care. Disney's pitch does little to set Blind Date 2026 apart from the 1,000 other dating shows cluttering up streaming.
And with Love is Blind UK and Married at First Sight particularly at the top of their game, I'm struggling to see what the new Blind Date can bring to an already crowded market.
Except, of course, its heritage as 'the most successful dating show of all time.'
Which makes you wonder why, if it was so loved, Disney is bothering to tinker with the format at all.

It certainly doesn't seem like the new version of the show will feature the studio audience who were such a big part of the original's success.
Who can forget their oohs and ahhs at the latest cheesy chat up line, or their gasps when Cilla exposed one contestant with the immortal line 'she's a journalist, ladies and gentleman'?
Granted, by the time Cilla's Blind Date ended, its one viewership of sometimes 18million viewers dwindled to around 5million by 2003; people had grown tired of Blind Date.
Pop Idol and then The X Factor completely changed the scale of Saturday night television and suddenly Cilla's kitsch studio with a makeshift sliding wall didn't cut it compared to the blockbuster budgets Simon Cowell was throwing at finding the next great popstar.
Two decades later though, big money TV has become strangely tired.
There's a glaring gap for Blind Date's simplicity on Saturday nights. Plonk it just before or after Strictly and you've got an unbeatable combo of easy television for the whole family.
It's relatively gentle approach would also be in contrast to the last primetime Saturday evening dating show – Take Me Out – which was comparatively brutal with its loud 'lights-off' rejection.
Dating shows today feel exclusively for young audiences. At 37, even I feel way too old to watch Love Island and while Love Is Blind UK was surprisingly excellent, it's still sexy and young(ish).
So much of Blind Date's charm wasn't remotely sexy. And if it did need to be modernised, why not look to First Dates instead of Love Island and MAFS?
After 12 years, the show is as wonderful and beloved as ever — proof that simplicity works. Its ability to show that anyone can find love, no matter their story or insecurity, gets me right in the gut every time.
Blind Date could be First Dates with a bigger budget, in a bigger slot, for a bigger audience.
Saturday night TV is in desperate need of something like that. More Trending
I wouldn't have bet on Blind Date being relevant again — but look at the success of Gladiators.
That era of 90s Saturday-night telly was never bettered, and it's still drawing in new generations now. But crucially, the format has barely changed.
This feels like such a missed opportunity for Blind Date; to instead churn out another deeply unoriginal dating show.

Disney+ can still change course and bring us the old-school Blind Date we need. And that would be a nice surprise surprise.

TV fans all say the same thing as the soaps are taken off air
It's that time of the year again where our favourite soap operas are shunted aside for coverage of the footy or Wimbledon. As a result of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025 coverage on ITV, Emmerdale won't return until Tuesday, July 8. Just as we get back into the swing of things, it's pulled again the following day. It's even worse news if you're a Coronation Street fan, as our next trip to the cobbles isn't scheduled until Thursday, July 10, at the later time of 9pm. Down South it's the same issue, with EastEnders not hitting our screens again until Wednesday, July 9. This week, the BBC soap doubled up episodes on BBC Two, meaning there's a whole eight days before we can get our next slice of Walford drama. Well, it turns out that Metro readers are not impressed. In fact, at the time of writing, a whopping 7.4k of you shared your opinion on our Facebook page last night, when we asked: 'Should soaps be moved for sport?' 802 soap fans even dealt an angry reaction. Brutal. Taking to the comments section, Russ Southgate fumed: 'I hate the summer. Tedious football, Olympics drivel, Wimbledon ping pong and all the other boring sport. Much rather have Emmerdale any day!' 'Put all sport on a channel of its own,' ordered Suzanne Dawson. Nadine Rivers reckoned things were starting to get a little samey. 'Why is the same game of tennis on bbc1 and bbc2?' they questioned. A truly mortified Ann Evans said: 'NOOOO leave our soaps alone !!!' Nigel Simmonds fancied himself as a channel controller, suggesting a nifty solution to the problem: 'Emmerdale & Corrie could easily be put on ITV2/3 or 4 instead.. and Eastenders could be on BBC3.' Carole Harris didn't think that our favourite genre should be the one to move: 'They should have a Sports channel then we can watch our soaps.' It goes without saying that both the soaps and sports coverage are culturally significant to the UK. But the fans remain divided. It seems us Brits aren't the only ones to be facing an issue with the two, as investment in Australian television production and sports was addressed by former Neighbours star Elaine Smith when she spoke to us this week. 'We're going through a difficult time at the moment,' she said. 'I think there's a huge amount the Australian government could be doing for the arts because it's not well supported in this country. 'Sport is, and it's not that it's sport against the arts, but there needs to be a balance. Both of those things are valuable to society and culture.' More Trending She added: 'There's so much more that can be done and it's why I became quite passionate about teaching drama. 'We have to invest in the kids and get them engaged in the same way we do with sports. Whether that be painting, music, dance, design or theatre. David Beckham 'brushes aside Brooklyn feud rumours' marking 26th anniversary
The rumoured Beckham family feud seems to be the furthest thing from David Beckham's mind as he paid tribute to wife Victoria Beckham on their 26th wedding anniversary. The England football ace, 50, and former Spice Girl, 51, tied the knot in 1999 in a lavish ceremony at Luttrellstown Castle outside Dublin surrounded by their nearest and dearest. The event was memorable not only for the couple's striking purple evening looks, but as a marker of how their relationship has stood the test of time, scandal, and fame more than two decades later. In an emotional Instagram post, David posted a series of throwback photos from their nuptials as well as with their children – Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 22, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 13 – following speculation of a rift with their eldest son and his wife Nicola Peltz, 30. '26 years today you said YES to me,' he began in the caption, addressing his wife. 'Happy Anniversary and thank you for giving me our beautiful children and building the life that we have together. I love you Lady Beckham.' He tagged the couple's four children in the post, despite speculation of a falling out between Brooklyn and other members of the family. Romeo reshared David's post on his Instagram Story alongside a series of white hearts. At the time of writing, Cruz and Brooklyn have not posted anything about their parents' anniversary. The Beckhams' daughter, Harper, doesn't have social media, so was mentioned by David in his caption with a hashtag. Reports of a rift first resurfaced when Brooklyn and his wife Nicola failed to show up at David's 50th birthday bash, despite all of his other children being in attendance. At the time, a source told Metro that Brooklyn was 'disappointed in himself' for doing so. Since then, the chef shared a telling Instagram post that he would 'always choose' Nicola, whom he wed in 2022. When Nicola's father Nelson Peltz celebrated his birthday in June, Brooklyn shared an Instagram post dedicated to his father-in-law, while he was also photographed at the Peltz family home in New York. As speculation continues to mount, Nicola has hit out at claims that she is 'controlling' her husband. One comment posted by an Instagram user on the social media platform read: 'The fact people are in this comment section talking bs about someone controlling a GROWN man is absurd. The guy is an adult and can make his own decisions, leave them be and stop blaming women for everything.' More Trending In a rather telling move, Nicola liked the comment. Victoria is said to be 'heartbroken' over the rumoured feud between Brooklyn and his dad, with sources claiming she is desperate for them to reconcile. Romeo and Cruz have made what some have interpreted as 'digs' at Brooklyn via TikTok comments and Instagram Stories. One of these included Cruz writing on his Story: 'It takes 43 muscles in your face to frown, and 17 to smile. Be kind and tell the truth.' Got a story? Emmerdale's Lisa Riley says goodbye to colleague as they join Coronation Street
Emmerdale's Lisa Riley has paid tribute to her friend and colleague, who has now joined Coronation Street. The actress, who plays Mandy Dingle in the show, wrote a sweet message on her Instagram recently to pal Joe. He works behind the scenes at the soap, but is now swapping the Dales for Weatherfield in his next job. In Lisa's post on Instagram, Joe can be seen showing off his acting skills in the salon. Lisa pretends that she's just been on the phone to Audrey's (Sue Nicholls) salon on the cobbles, and tells Joe he can check there for an appointment. Joe then waves to camera and honestly, pass the Bafta. Joe is hugely loved by cast members of Emmerdale, as plenty of them have shared messages in the comments section of the clip. Olivia Bromley, who plays Dawn Taylor, said: 'We love you Joe!', while Vanessa Woodfield star Michelle Hardwick said: 'Awwwww Joe! We'll miss you so much!!!!'. Lisa's character Mandy Dingle has been on hand to support Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) recently, who has faced trouble with his dad Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards). More Trending Fearing that Bear might have dementia, Paddy spoke to Mandy about conducting a memory test in secret. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Mandy admitted that she didn't think it was a very good idea, knowing Bear would react badly if he worked out what was going on. Paddy enlisted help from Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) but it did, as Mandy predicted, end terribly. Bear reacted with violence when he realised what Paddy and Marlon were up to, and pinned his son against a wall outside.
