EC not giving us time for meeting: Tejashwi

Time of India17 hours ago
Patna: Leader of opposition in the state assembly,
Tejashwi Prasad Yadav
, on Tuesday accused the
Election Commission
of frequently changing guidelines regarding the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in the state. He alleged that they (
RJD
) asked for a meeting with the poll body several times in the past week but received no response till date.
Addressing reporters here, Tejashwi said after a close analysis of the SIR, it appears that the EC is acting at the behest of a particular party. He alleged that the EC itself looks confused given the way it has been making changes in its guidelines at repeated intervals. "We sought an appointment for a meeting with the EC several times in the past. Even on Monday, we asked for it but got no response," Tejashwi said on Tuesday.
He was accompanied by state Congress president Rajesh Kumar and several senior RJD leaders.
Stating that the poll body should have taken all parties into confidence before launching SIR ahead of the assembly polls, the RJD leader wondered about the "mysterious silence" of the EC, asking the latter to give a point-by-point reply to the issues raised by them. Tejashwi said the poll body must come forward to end the confusion gripping the minds of the common people without any delay.
Asking the EC to immediately "revoke all arbitrary orders and issue a final, clear, and simple directive", Tejashwi sought the elimination of the requirement of documents for the SIR process.
Questioning the launch of SIR during the monsoon, Tejashwi alleged that 90% of people in the state are of the opinion that the EC is acting to "delete the names of voters from booths where the opposition parties are in a strong position after identifying those booths."
He alleged that dalits, adivasis, OBC/EBC, and minority class voters, could be the worst victims of the EC's current drive since the majority migrant workers from Bihar come from these communities. "If the EC really wants to weed out fake voters from the electoral rolls, it must have launched the exercise just after the conclusion of Lok Sabha polls," he said.

Bengal BJP chief moves Calcutta HC accusing police of detaining him illegally

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s West Bengal unit president and Union minister of state Sukanta Majumdar filed a writ petition before the Calcutta high court on Wednesday challenging his detentions by state police during some recent political agitations, his office said in a statement. Union minister of state and Bengal BKJP chief, Sukanta Majumdar. 'The petition, filed through his legal counsel, details various instances of unlawful restriction and detention by the police, allegedly carried out with complete disregard for the due process of law and the fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 14, 19, and 21 of the Constitution of India,' the statement said. Majumdar is the Union minister of state for education and development of north east region. The petition sought 'issuance of a writ of mandamus directing state authorities to strictly act within the constitutional and legal framework while dealing with political protests or engagements by the petitioner.' It also sought a high-level impartial enquiry into the detentions and disciplinary action against the police officers concerned. In a parallel development, the Lok Sabha secretariat has sought a factual note from the Union home ministry on a June 19 incident that Majumdar has cited as breach of privilege of a Parliament member. In an official note, a copy of which was seen by HT, the Lok Sabha secretariat asked the Home ministry on June 27 to file a factual note on an alleged attack on Majumdar's convoy by Trinamool Congress supporters at Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district on June 19. In a letter to the Lok Sabha speaker, a copy of which was seen by HT, Majumdar alleged on June 20 that the Diamond Harbour police superintendent and the sub-divisional police officer 'failed to take any preventive or protective action.' The West Bengal police did not make any statement on Majumdar's writ petition and the allegation of breach of privilege till Wednesday afternoon.

MoEF returning Andhra Pradesh's G-B proposal a huge victory for Telangana, says Uttam

HYDERABAD: Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday described the decision of the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to return a proposal by Andhra Pradesh on the Banakacherla link project as a 'huge victory for Telangana'. Uttam made a detailed PowerPoint presentation on 'The Water Issues of Telangana in Godavari and Krishna River Basins' at Praja Bhavan on Tuesday. During his presentation, he said that the Congress government will not compromise on Telangana's rightful share of waters in the Godavari and Krishna rivers. He said the previous BRS regime had mortgaged Telangana's interests and allowed Andhra Pradesh to push ahead with schemes like the Godavari-Banakacherla (G-B) link project because of its 'compromised approach'. The Irrigation minister further said that the Congress government cited multiple legal violations, including disregard for the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award, which allocated flood and surplus waters among co-basin states. He pointed out that the Environmental Clearance (EC) for Polavaram was granted in 2005 for a different project scope, and any large-scale diversion like the G-B project would require fresh environmental assessment under EIA rules. 'We made it crystal clear — Telangana will not allow its hard-earned and historically legitimate rights to be usurped,' he said.

ECI cautions against misinformation regarding Bihar electoral roll revision

NEW DELHI: Noting that 'the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)' of the electoral roll in Bihar has been progressing smoothly as planned and strictly as per orders issued on June 24, 2025, officials in the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday asserted that 'any misinformation being spread should be ignored'. Meanwhile, the Commission also asserted that given repeated conflicting emails being sent by unauthorised persons on behalf of various parties, the panel 'will take cognisance only of 'Heads of Political Parties', who are the official authorised representatives of political parties registered with the ECI and no other unauthorised person(s)'. After getting confirmation from the CPI (ML) and the CPI(M), the ECI officials said, the poll panel will be meeting the General Secretary of the former Dipankar Bhattacharya and other authorised representatives of the two parties this evening at 5 pm. In identical communications to political parties, the ECI said, 'I am directed to state that pursuant to your email dated 30.06.2025, despite it not having any evidence of authorisation from the mentioned Political Parties, the Commission had still given a time of 05:00 PM on 02.07.2025 to the concerned Political Parties and sought their confirmation of attendance of the said meeting from the head of the parties along with one authorised person.'
