TORONTO — After both made cameos off the bench Wednesday night, Trent Grisham and Austin Wells returned to the Yankees lineup Thursday for the first time since their respective injury scares.
Grisham had been out since leaving Monday's game with hamstring tightness, with the team initially fearing it might lead to an injured list stint.

But the center fielder healed quicker than expected and was ready to go by Thursday's series finale against the Blue Jays.
'He feels good about it. Training staff feels good about it,' Boone said before the Yankees' 8-5 loss. 'Is it 100 percent? Maybe not. But feel good about that he's good enough and sound enough to go.'
Grisham returned to the leadoff spot Thursday and went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks, while also hitting a game-tying solo home run in the third inning.

His comeback allowed Boone to shift Cody Bellinger to right field and give Aaron Judge a DH day after spending the last three days on the turf.
Though he has cooled off from his red-hot start, Grisham still entered Thursday second on the team with 15 home runs to go with an .816 OPS in 73 games.
'He's been so important to us on both sides of the ball,' Boone said. 'His center-field play, his at-bat quality all year. Even when he went through that 'downturn,' you watch day in and day out, it's a good at-bat. He's hit for power. He's got on base. He's been a really good two-way player, All-Star-caliber player for us in the first half. So, big to be able to avoid [the injured list].'

Wells, meanwhile, started at catcher for the first time since Saturday.
In between, he underwent testing for a lack of circulation in his left pointer finger, with the results showing arterial damage instead of anything more serious.
Wells went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout in Thursday's loss.

Following Thursday's game, the Yankees optioned Clayton Beeter back to Triple-A after he got tagged for three runs on three hits and two walks across 1 ²/₃ innings in relief of the injured Clarke Schmidt.
DJ LeMahieu was out of the lineup Thursday, but the Yankees still declined to use it as a chance to bounce Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to his best defensive position, second base.
Instead, Chisholm remained at third base with Oswald Peraza starting at second.
'I don't want to just move him back and forth and do that necessarily in that form or fashion,' Boone said.

Asked about how much he is considering moving Chisholm back to second, Boone continued to say it was an ongoing decision.

'Continue to evaluate our roster, see where we're at, see what makes the most sense,' he said. 'It's something I think about a little bit.'
Peraza lifted for pinch hitter in the top of the seventh, and LeMahieu came on to finish the game at second base.

The last time they saw Juan Soto, the Yankees shut down their former teammate in the May Subway Series, holding him to 1-for-10 with four walks and three strikeouts.
Entering this weekend's rematch, Soto is coming off NL Player of the Month honors after a torrid June.
'He's had a Juan-like month,' Boone said. 'So it'll be a challenge holding him down. Comes down to executing at a really high level.'

The Yankees signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league contract Thursday, while losing Triple-A infielder CJ Alexander on waivers to the Dodgers.

MLB Has Fans Hyped for Subway Series

MLB Has Fans Hyped for Subway Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Subway Series Part II kicks off Friday at Citi Field in Queens. When the New York Yankees and New York Mets squared off back in May, the Yanks took two out of three games. A lot has changed since then, including both teams slipping out of first place in their divisions. Advertisement The Mets (50-38) were recently swept on the road by the Pittsburgh Pirates but bounced back by taking two of three from the Milwaukee Brewers at home. They now trail the Philadelphia Phillies by 1.5 games in the National League East. Across the diamond, the New York Yankees enter the weekend at 48-39. They have dropped four straight and have lost seven of their last 10 games. This week, the Toronto Blue Jays completed a four-game sweep of the Yankees at Rogers Centre. Despite the recent struggles, MLB amped up the energy on Friday with a quick message that lit up fans: "The Subway Series makes its stop in Queens!" Advertisement Even with their frustrations, fans on both sides are excited for the showdown. "Mets in THREE," started from this fan. This Yankees fan disagrees: "Yankees by a million!!!" Here, this fan recognizes the struggles: "Somehow they will both find a way to lose." Excitement coming here: "Subway showdown, let's go!" "John Rocker sends his Happy July 4th wishes New York," mentioned here. The trash talking was on: "We better handle those bums now." New York Yankees right fielder Aaron Penner-Imagn Images On the field, the Yankees will be led by American League batting average leader Aaron Judge. He enters the series with a .364 average, 116 hits, 31 home runs and 70 RBIs. He has been the Yankees' anchor all season. Advertisement For the Mets, slugger Pete Alonso is tied for fourth in National League hits. Alonso needs just five more to reach 100 and is third in the NL with 67 RBI. Friday's series opener at 3:10 p.m. ET features Marcus Stroman starting for the Yankees, while Justin Hagenman gets the nod for the Mets. College Football News writer Peter Fiutak makes a win total prediction for Clemson in 2025

Where does Clemson football land in 2026 national recruiting rankings after busy month? Under Dabo Swinney, Clemson football heads into another season with playoff hopes — but the betting line isn't quite as high as the national chatter suggests. The Tigers' win total is set at 9.5, which they've only topped once in the past three seasons after dominating that mark during their mid-2010s run. College Football News' Pete Fiutak actually places his projection a tick lower at nine wins, yet he isn't dismissing what this roster can do. 'The Tigers will know right out of the gate if they're for real,' Fiutak said, pointing to the huge early showdown with LSU. From there, he sees enough tricky matchups to test Clemson's focus but thinks this team can still reach the College Football Playoff without an ACC title if it handles its business. A major piece of the puzzle is whether the defensive front can look more like the unit that anchored Clemson's last national championship. Fiutak highlights how in 2018 'no one averaged over four yards per carry' against that front, but last season the Tigers were gashed on the ground far too often. He noted that four teams — Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisville — all averaged more than six yards per carry and beat Clemson as a result. On offense, Fiutak says the line has to be the foundation. Four starters return, with Blake Miller and Walker Parks both landing in his top 10 Clemson players. 'The skill guys get all of the love and attention, but if Clemson is going to have an expected huge season offensively, it starts with the line loaded with All-ACC-caliber talents,' Fiutak said. The backfield is another question mark. Freshman Gideon Davidson is viewed as a potential difference-maker, especially if Jay Haynes can't bounce back from his knee injury. Fiutak thinks Cade Klubnik's growth as a runner helps, but Clemson will need Davidson to be ready if they want to lean on the ground game late in the year. In the bigger picture, Fiutak frames 2025 as a test for Swinney's patient, recruit-and-develop blueprint. 'Maybe this is how you're really supposed to do it… Maybe it just took a few years to get here,' he said. For a program chasing its old standard in a new era, Clemson has a chance to prove its way still works.
