Former Johor Mufti Nooh Gadot Named Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1447H

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- Former Johor Mufti Datuk Dr Nooh Gadot has been named the recipient of the National Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1447H/2025M award.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, presented the award, which includes a cash prize, a trophy and a certificate of appreciation, to the prominent Islamic scholar at the national-level Maal Hijrah Celebration held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre here today.
Nooh, 79, was born in Kampung Tekam, Pogoh in Segamat and currently serves as Adviser to the Johor Islamic Religious Council.
He served as Johor Mufti from 1999 to 2002 and was appointed in 2008 as the Religious Adviser to the then Sultan of Johor, the late Sultan Iskandar Sultan Ismail.
A holder of a PhD in Human Development from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Nooh has received several accolades, including the Johor Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2009 award and the National Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1434H/2013M award.
Speaking to reporters after the event, Nooh expressed his gratitude for the honour.
'May this recognition motivate me to continue serving the ummah and upholding the syiar of Islam,' he said.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia Minister of Haj and Umrah, Dr Tawfig Fawzan Muhammed Al-Rabiah, 60, was named the recipient of the International Tokoh Maal Hijrah award. He also received a cash prize, a trophy and a certificate.
Dr Tawfig has played a pivotal role in modernising pilgrimage services through digital initiatives and international cooperation, in line with the Saudi Vision 2030 agenda.

SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- Specific legislation governing artificial intelligence (AI) must be expedited due to the growing negative impact of the technology, particularly in fraud-related crimes. Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said he was informed that between 2020 and 2024, AI-related crimes have resulted in an estimated global loss of around RM5 billion. Acryl Sani and M Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title 'Datuk'. He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud. 'I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals,' he said. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo was previously reported as saying that a full report on the proposed regulations and the possible enactment of specific legislation for AI would be submitted to his ministry by the end of this month. -- BERNAMA

Cut SST to 4% and postpone new tax to January, says Chinese chamber
The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia said rising costs, which have been felt in 2025, are expected to persist next year. KUALA LUMPUR : A business chamber has urged the government to cut the sales and service tax to 4%, provide higher thresholds and expanded exemptions, and postpone implementation of the expanded tax to January to allow businesses more time to prepare. The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia said in a statement that adequate preparation was crucial to ensure better compliance and smooth implementation, Bernama reported. The chamber called for: a lower tax rate of 4% in the first two years (2026–2027) to ease the burden on businesses and consumers; a higher registration threshold, from RM2 million to RM3 million, for service tax on leasing, rental and construction services; a higher tax exemption threshold, of RM2 million in annual sales instead of RM1 million announced on Thursday, for small and medium-sized enterprises. 'We also propose a longer exemption period of 36 months for non-reviewable and reviewable contracts, to cover all project types due to the nature of the projects and their cycles,' the chamber said. The expanded SST applies to additional services (wellness centres, financial, and healthcare) and three new services (rental or leasing, construction works, and education), and is due to begin on July 1. The chamber said in a statement that it 'cautiously welcomed' the government's review of the expanded SST announced on Thursday. However, the chamber said there were concerns over multiple cost increases coinciding with a challenging global and domestic economic environment, exacerbated by the uncertainty surrounding US trade tariff policies and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. 'The effects of rising costs, which have been felt in 2025, are expected to persist or influence the business and economic landscape in 2026,' it added.
