Billion Dollar Playground review – drop everything! Your hate-watch of the summer is here

The Guardian08-07-2025
Who among us, as the summer months and dreams of sun and cloudless skies begin and the visions of holidays and freedom take on solid form, does not think: where oh where is my hate-watch of the season?
Well, fear not, mes chéris – the wait is over! Billion Dollar Playground has arrived and it is a feast for all. Imagine that The White Lotus's characters were real, but worse, and that none of them – increasingly unbelievably – ended up murdered. One reprobate complains that the bath towels in their luxury beachfront rental in Sydney are 'too smooth'. Another derides the chef for putting smoked salmon in her caviar and asks: 'Is that the same truffle as yesterday? Then definitely not.' Mo' canapes, mo' problems.
That has got your glands juicing, hasn't it? Feel that vitriol start to pump! Remember what it feels like to be truly alive! And I have barely started. Because, unlike at The White Lotus, below stairs isn't much better.
But I am getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning. Alex and Tom are an Australian husband-and-wife team who own Luxico, a company that manages A$1bn-worth (£480m-worth) of wildly opulent properties for wildly rich people who rent them out to other wildly rich people while, presumably, the owners are staying at one of their other wildly opulent properties. We do not warm to Alex and Tom ('Pressure makes diamonds – and rich people love diamonds!' he says of the efforts his minions must make to serve the wealthy guests), but they are not around enough to hate, so save your energy. We have much to be getting on with.
The team whose job it is to prepare the house before a group of self-made millionaires arrive for a girls' weekend is headed by the chief concierge, Salvatore. He can spot a misaligned chair or a rucked rug at 50 paces and needs everyone to follow orders – and a minutely detailed timetable – at all times so the endeavour doesn't collapse into a heap of dust and rouse the ire of the vile, whining people ('I thought the beach was private?') they are gathered to serve.
Unfortunately, one of his team members is Heaven. She loves to be around money and doesn't see why she should be 'disrespected' by being required to follow instructions. She sets up great events for the guests – such as getting them exclusive access to the amusement park Luna Park, so it can serve as the backdrop to dessert for their first meal – but doesn't follow through on details, such as bringing crockery and cutlery. Everyone else must abandon their jobs to save the guests' night (and Heaven's backside).
Of course, she is endlessly grateful for this. Just kidding. She takes responsibility for nothing and is a piece of work. Her life plan seems to involve finding a sugar daddy then 'being able to afford Salvatore' herself. Smashing.
Elsie is the housekeeper. She has a robust attitude to the job. When confronted with the problem of four bottles of Dom Pérignon missing from a guest's luggage, she suggests serving whatever the house already holds. 'They won't be able to tell the fucking difference.' We warm to Elsie.
Jay is the maintenance man and driver. He is all teeth and abs. He has a second job as a cover model for spicy romance novels. No, really. He enjoys his life.
Matt and George are handsome brothers and chefs. They enjoy their lives, too, and are sanguine about being wheeled out to distract guests with their hotness any time disaster looms. Especially Matt.
Nicole is a trainee concierge, keen to do well, but, one suspects, on a collision course to either Jay's or Matt's bed – she just has to decide whether she wants a blinding grin or a nice meal afterwards.
Jasmine is the new deputy concierge, rapidly promoted to chief when Salvatore – goaded by Heaven's inability to understand that she is not the centre of the universe – leaves abruptly. This makes him almost as bad as Heaven in my book, but no one is listening to me.
JB is the butler. He fancied being the chief concierge himself. By the end of the first two episodes, he is showing signs of being a Gallic Machiavelli. He is also the chief cocktail supplier and a backup hottie to the chefs.
The guests? I have spent enough time and words on them already. I wish them nothing but repeat truffles, smooth towels, salmony caviar and painful ends.
In short, it's a winner. Your new escapist watch is here. Next week, it's tech bros. Enjoy.

Nova star Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald confronted by fan live on air after the 'hungover' radio host was rude to her at a party: 'Disappointed'

Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald has been confronted by a fan live on air after he refused to take a photo with her after a party. The fan, named Joanne, called into Nova's Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie show on Tuesday when the hosts requested stories on celebrity encounters. Joanne said she approached Fitzy after a party and asked for a selfie - only to be rebuffed. 'Oh well I was a fan of his for ages... this tall, handsome man, and we were at a party, and I asked him if I could have a photo, and he said no!' Joanne explained. 'What! Who was it?' Fitzy's co-host Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli asked, to which Joanne replied, 'Your friend, Fitzy!' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Fitzy was shocked by the confession, replying, 'Give me a break. I'm always accommodating Joanne, are you serious?' 'I'm serious. You were probably a bit hungover at the time as we all were,' Joanne said with a laugh. 'This was ages ago, we were both at the same function place in Terry Hills,' she added. 'When the party finished we were all in the foyer there. But you made up for it in the end.' Fitzy asked: 'How did I make up for it? Because I'm really disappointed in myself!' All's well that ends well, Joanne assured the worried radio star, explaining she later got a selfie with him at another event. 'Because I got a photo with you both when Wippa used to have his running club at Hyde Park!' she said. Ryan became a household name by appearing on Channel 10's Big Brother back in 2004. The 48-year-old recently revealed the surprising amount he was paid to appear on the then controversial reality show. He debunked rumours the cast were raking in the big bucks during his time on the ratings juggernaut. 'A lot of people thought that we got paid a motza when we were on Big Brother. It was $100 a day,' Ryan revealed. While this may seem a pittance, even by 2004 standards, Ryan added that he wasn't perturbed by his paycheck given his lack of expenditures during his reality show stint. 'This is the thing. I was in there for three months and you're not spending that money on anything so it's a long time. It's a good little whack when you get out,' he said. Ryan, who finished fourth on the show's fourth season behind winner Trevor Butler and runners-up Bree Amer and Paul Dyer, said there were some fringe benefits thrown in to soften the blow of his meagre money. 'Back in 2004 when I was on Big Brother, I mean I finished fourth, but I left the show with a Mitsubishi Lancer, a trip to New Caledonia, I think I got a TAG Heuer watch, which I've got somewhere around here,' he said.

New Strictly pro Julian Caillon hit by fakery row before he even appears on BBC series

NEW Strictly pro Julian Caillon has already become embroiled in a fakery row before he even appears on this year's new series. The Australian hunk was one of two dancers named by the BBC One dance show as joining their line-up of pros for 2025. But Julian, who's signed up alongside American Alexis Warr, has revealed he's already been asked to have a phoney bust up with a fellow competitor admitting: "I'll just say and do whatever needs to be done'.' It was during in his former job on Dancing with the Stars, which is the Oz version of Strictly, and dints the idea that he is as "squeaky clean" as British show bosses hoped. The ballroom and Latin American expert said: 'Reality TV is not necessarily what you think. A massive aspect of reality TV is not really real. "I remember in one episode of Dancing With The Stars, one of my celebrities was late to rehearsals and the producers were asking me to go around and pretend that I was frustrated. 'But she had something pop up and stuff happens sometimes and life gets in the way and we get a little bit late. It's not the biggest deal in the world. We just stay back a bit later. "But they made this whole kind of thing out of it. 'I think during my earlier experiences, whatever I was asked to say or do, I just thought 'It's a privilege for me to be here. I need them to like me. "So I'll just say and do whatever needs to be done'.' But Caillon claims he has more confidence to stand up for himself and insist he would no longer fake anything for the cameras. He told the Try With Alex podcast: 'In a way, it teaches you to know what your values are and what you're willing to do and not to do. Shirley Ballas reveals Strictly's new signings and teases line-up is 'off the charts' 'As I got more confident, it made me be confident in my own choices. Now I know I have clear boundaries and lines where I know 'This is what I'm willing to do. If they ask me to say this, I'm just gonna say No'." Julian, who grew up in Australia, began dancing at the age of 10 and has represented his country at international level in both ballroom and Latin styles. He's appeared as a professional on three seasons of Dancing With The Stars Australia and has toured worldwide with Burn The Floor. He also competed on the Australian edition of So You Think You Can Dance. Alongside his dance career, Julian holds a degree in Exercise Physiology from UNSW Sydney and has worked as a personal trainer. In December, he got engaged to his girlfriend Sofia and shared a video of his beachside proposal with followers on Instagram. He said: 'Joining the cast of Strictly really is a dream come true. "I've watched it for years, especially cheering on all the amazing dancers I know and work with who've been part of it. "I can't wait to get stuck in, have some fun, and be part of something special!' The duo join a returning cast of professionals that includes Dianne Buswell, Gorka Marquez, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Vito Coppola, Amy Dowden, Nancy Xu, Karen Hauer, Jowita Przystal, Luba Mushtuk, Carlos Gu, Johannes Radebe, Lauren Oakley, Aljaž Škorjanec and Michelle Tsiakkas. Amy Childs displays her extreme weight loss in a lace minidress as she films TOWIE with fiancé Billy Delbosq after 'calling off their wedding'

Amy Childs displayed her extreme weight loss in a black lace minidress as she filmed TOWIE with fiancé Billy Delbosq at the Brentwood Padel Club on Monday. The reality star, 35, looked in good spirits as she spent time with her fiancé after reportedly calling off their wedding to focus on her personal life. Amy made sure to turn heads at the Padel court as she arrived in the glamorous lace short sleeved number which she teamed with a green clutch. The TV personality, who previously revealed she'd been going through a tough time causing her extreme weight loss, put on a leggy display in a pair of towering suede heels and accessorised with black sunglasses. The couple looked in good spirits as they cosied up for photos before Billy, who was dressed in all white, took to the court to play with their co-stars. The TOWIE stars were also joined by former co-star James Argent as they showed their support towards him after his ex Nicoline Arthursson broke her silence following his suspended jail sentence. Arg, 37, was recently handed a suspended sentence and ordered to attend a domestic violence course after pleading guilty to 'mistreatment' for pushing Nicoline down steps at their home in Spain. But despite Nicoline's powerful statement addressing the incident last month, James seemed unfazed as he enjoyed a game of Padel with the TOWIE boys. Billy and Arg went up against fellow co-stars Dan Edgar, Diags, Roman Hackett and Sammy Root and Jordan Brook while filming the reality show. Meanwhile Sophie Kasaei cut a trendy figure in a jeweled denim crop top and matching shorts as she joined Amy on the side lines supporting her boyfriend Jordan. However, Sophie soon kicked off her white heels and picked up a Padel to have a go at the game too. Meanwhile the other TOWIE girls, Amber Turner and Chloe Meadows dressed to impress as they headed for lunch in Loughton. Amber showed off her incredible figure in a black and pink halterneck number which she paired with a beige Chanel handbag and matching sandals. Meanwhile Chloe flashed her midriff in a black and white striped strapless crop top and matching trousers as she picked up a matcha ahead of the meal. It comes after Amy was said to be 'gutted' after reportedly calling off the couple's impending nuptials following a difficult few months. According to Closer magazine, Amy pushed back plans to walk down the aisle with Billy due to 'last minute changes', following previous claims her 'perfect' day was under threat. An insider said: 'Amy has had to cancel her wedding and she's absolutely gutted. There was going to be a show around it, following the run-up to their big day.. 'But they've had to make some last-minute changes based on what's going on in their lives.' Amy and Billy welcomed three-year-old twins Milly and Billy, in April 2022, while she is also mum to daughter Polly, eight, with builder Bradley Wright, and Ritchie, five, with her ex of the same name. And last month, the mother-of-four also explained that she'd been going through a stressful period with her mother's ill health, as she revealed the real reason for her recent weight loss. She had previously sparked concern from fans with her new slimmed-down appearance after dropping an incredible two stone. But last month, she addressed the weight loss and resulting cruel trolling in an emotional interview with OK! Magazine, saying: 'I'm going through so much at the minute that the weight has fallen off me. 'I worry about my mum constantly. She's very emotional – she thinks she's going to have another heart attack.' To be honest, I do feel better when I'm a bit heavier than I am at the moment. 'There's so much going on at the minute – it's the result of pure stress. We're also having renovations done in the midst of parenting four kids.' Amy added: 'But I'm strong, I've been in this industry for 15 years. I've had lots of people concerned about me, which I completely understand, but yes, people can be so quick to judge.' She also explained how she once tried using weight-loss injections 18 months ago, but it made her 'so ill she threw up three or four times'. Her mother Julie, 59, was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after suffering a heart attack in April Amy took to Instagram at the time to admit her mum's health scare had left her terrified, and that Julie was 'doing OK' but needed rest and was in hospital waiting for a stent to be fitted. A heart attack can lead to a complete blockage of blood flow to the heart, and a stent is a medical device used to open that blockage and restore blood flow.
