Netherlands wants to double its military personnel by 2030
AMSTERDAM — The Dutch Ministry of Defense has confirmed it aims to more than double its military personnel, from 70,000 to 200,000 by 2030.
In a letter from the State Secretary for Defense, Gijs Tuinman, to the House of Representatives, he said that defense is "facing a major change," which means "that the Netherlands must be able to stand on its own two feet."
In order to increase the size of the armed forces, the government will send a survey to all young people who are called up at the age of 17 to get them interested in serving.
Completing that survey is still voluntary for the time being, but it could eventually become mandatory, as could an interview or a medical examination.
The government also aims to increase the number of 'reservists,' those who work part-time for the armed forces, often combining their service with civilian work or studies.
They also want to encourage more young people to participate in the so-called service year, in which people between the ages of 18 and 27 can voluntarily get acquainted with defense.The government is convinced that, "in view of the current threat assessment," a larger armed force should be created even sooner than was already intended.Earlier, it aimed for an increase to 100.000 people, including professional soldiers, reservists, and civilian staff. At the end of last week, it became clear that this number would be adjusted upwards.The ambition is to have the armed forces organized into both a peace organization and a military organization by 2027."This isn't just about quantity, but also about placing the right people with the necessary skills in the right roles on time," Tuinman stated.Fears about Russia and doubts about the future of US protection are pressuring EU countries to boost their defense spending. — Euronews

Japan's agriculture minister said Friday the country would oppose any call by the European Union to add eels to an endangered species list that would limit trade in them. Eel is eaten worldwide but is particularly popular in Japan, where it is called "unagi" and traditionally served grilled after being covered in a sticky-sweet sauce. Japanese media have reported that the EU could soon propose that all eel species be added to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) which limits trade of protected animals. There are 19 species and subspecies of eel, many of them now threatened due to a range of factors including pollution and overfishing. In 2014, the Japanese eel was listed as endangered, but not critically endangered, by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which cited factors including habitat loss, overfishing, pollution and migration barriers. Protecting the animal is complicated by their complex life cycle, which unfolds over a vast area, and the many unknowns about how they reproduce.

Israel's aggression against Iran and the end of its impunity
While the Islamic Republic of Iran had chosen the path of indirect negotiations with the US, on the eve of the sixth round, on June 13, 2025, it faced an illegal armed attack by the Israeli regime. Iran had been prepared to reach an agreement within the framework of its commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and the legitimate right to a peaceful nuclear program. In response to Israel's unlawful act of aggression, Iran exercised its inherent and lawful right to self-defense as stipulated in Article 51 of the UN Charter. The targeting of Iran's fully transparent and safeguarded nuclear facilities, subject to the UN's monitoring and verification — by a rogue regime that flouts international law, evades Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligations, and hides its nuclear arsenal — reveals the hypocrisy of the so-called rules-based order. The Israeli regime, as an illegal occupying entity, has consistently violated international law through prolonged occupation, genocide, and illegitimate aggression against Iran. These acts aim to destabilize the region, halt its progress and prosperity, and impose its bullying agenda. But the era of impunity has come to an end. Iran has always made its position clear that it has never ignited war in the region, nor will it ever do so. We have long warned that Israel threatens regional security, with dire implications for the entire region. The Israeli regime's aggression was not just against Iran, it was a calculated and deliberate strike against regional stability, integrity, progress, and development. It is aimed at forcibly reshaping the region according to its destructive agenda. In the face of the Israeli attack, Iran deeply appreciates the principled positions and valuable solidarity of neighboring countries, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. They have, in these critical times, stood in unity and solidarity alongside Iran, firmly condemning the hostile act against Iran. The great nation of Iran will never forget the full support of the Kingdom, under the special directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, to provide Iranian pilgrims with comprehensive services, and to help facilitate their safe return home. The wise positions of regional countries during Israel's aggression against Iran demonstrate their collective wisdom. They have shown their responsibility to safeguard the region against the Israeli threat, which is the primary disruptor of its peace, stability, and security. At this critical juncture, the region is in greater need than ever to foster cooperation and ensure shared stability. Iran continues to extend its hand of friendship to neighboring states. Pakistan approves 10 percent gas price hike for industry, power plants under IMF conditions
KARACHI: Pakistan on Friday approved a 10 percent increase in natural gas prices for industrial users and power plants starting next month, in line with reforms mandated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to ensure cost recovery and tariff rationalization, an official statement said. The decision was taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. While prices for bulk consumers and gas-fired power plants will rise, household consumers will be shielded from the increase. 'To protect household consumers, gas prices will remain unchanged, with only fixed charges revised,' the Finance Division said in a statement released after the meeting. 'However, prices for bulk consumers, industrial units and power plants will be increased by an average of 10 percent.' The statement said the revised pricing structure, submitted by the Petroleum Division, complies with regulatory obligations under the OGRA Ordinance and meets structural benchmarks under Pakistan's ongoing loan program with the IMF. It also supports a shift from cross-subsidies to direct, targeted assistance for low-income consumers. DEFENSE GRANT The ECC also approved a Rs15.8 billion ($55.3 million) supplementary grant for the Ministry of Defense to cover a shortfall in salaries, allowances and pending dues. The funding includes disbursements under the prime minister's compensation package for martyrs of the recent Pakistan-India war fought last month. In a separate decision, the committee gave in-principle approval to launch a risk coverage scheme for small farmers and underserved regions by August 14. The program is expected to bring 750,000 new borrowers into the formal credit system and unlock a Rs300 billion ($1.05 billion) agricultural loan portfolio over three years (FY2026-28). The statement said the total budgetary support for the scheme, covering risk coverage and bank operating costs, is estimated at Rs37.5 billion ($131.25 million), to be disbursed between FY2027 and FY2031. The government has directed relevant ministries to incorporate additional safeguards before the official rollout.
