PH payments position swings to surplus in June 2025
Data released by the BSP on Friday showed the country's balance of payments (BOP) stood at a surplus of $226 million in June 2025.
This was a reversal from the $155-billion deficit recorded in June 2024.
The payments position takes into account Philippine transactions with the rest of the world during a specific period. A surplus means more funds entered the country, while a deficit means more funds exited.
'The BOP surplus reflected the foreign currency deposits by the national government with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and income from BSP investments,' the central bank said.
June's BOP surplus narrowed the year-to-date deficit from $5.8 billion in January to May 2025 to $5.6 billion in January to June 2025.
'Preliminary data indicate that the year-to-date BOP deficit was largely due to the continued trade in goods deficit. This decline was partly offset, however, by the sustained net inflows from personal remittances from overseas Filipinos, foreign borrowings by the national government, and foreign portfolio investments,' the BSP said.
The BOP position mirrored the increase in the gross international reserves (GIR), which rose from $105.2 billion as of end-May 2025 to $106.0 billion by end-June 2025.
'The latest GIR level provides a robust external liquidity buffer, equivalent to 7.2 months' worth of imports of goods and payments of services and primary income,' the BSP said.
'Moreover, it covers about 3.4 times the country's short-term external debt based on residual maturity,' it added.
The GIR are made up of foreign-denominated securities, foreign exchange, and other assets including gold.
GIR helps a country finance its imports and foreign debt obligations, stabilize its currency, and provide a buffer against external economic shocks. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

DMW to go after brokers who charge placement fees for OFW jobs in SoKor
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Wednesday it would clamp down on brokers who charge Filipino workers with placement fees in exchange for seasonal contract employment in South Korea. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the practice of such brokers has been become widespread over the last four to five years as some Filipinos clients end up paying exorbitant fees, sometimes repaid via loan arrangements, in the hope of getting the jobs. The agency has worked to stop the practice since it took over the regulation of seasonal worker deployment last year, but noted that some of these brokers continue to operate. "Brokers, some of them Korean nationals, roam free and charge our employed workers or provide loans… So-called loans with additional fees involved in those loans, placement fees. Ang nangyayari, apat or limang buwan nang paglalagi ng seasonal worker. [Ang sahod para sa] tatlong buwan, binabayad doon sa broker, (What happens is that the seasonal worker stays for four to five months. Their salary for three months is paid to the broker)," said Cacdac. The DMW immediately came into the picture following the deaths of six OFWs. Since then, the Philippines has deployed 8,000 workers through DMW offices with one case of an OFW death. "About a year ago, we stepped in and imposed an interim moratorium on the program until we allowed deployment through our offices by processing of the OFWs through the DMW. We look at their contracts, ensure that they are insured medically, and the OWWA (Overseas Workers Welfare Administration) membership. Thus far, meron tayong isang case ng nasawi over the last year since we handled the program (Thus far, we've had one case of death over the last year since we handled the program). But we are also braced to sign an interagency memorandum circular with the DILG, DFA, and all the relevant agencies about this matter," Cacdac said, referring to the Department of the Interior and Local Government and Department of Foreign Affairs. DMW is handling a total of 25 pending cases against brokers and has assisted the DOJ in filing cases against brokers in Davao and Bulacan. DOLE Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma made the statement during the second day of the post-State of the Nation Address (SONA) discussions in San Juan City, where he also stressed the role of employers and the private sector in job creation. PH gaming industry grows 26% to P214.75B in H1 2025 — PAGCOR
The country's gaming industry saw a double-digit growth in terms of total revenues, reaching over P200 billion in the first half of 2025, thanks to continued popularity of online or digital betting among Filipinos. Data released by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) showed the sector's gross gaming revenues (GGR) stood at P214.75 billion from January to June 2025, up 26% from P171 billion year-on-year. This as the electronic gaming sector — composed of e-games, e-bingo, and bingo grantees – continued to outpace traditional or brick-and-mortar gaming with P114.83 billion in gross revenues or 53.47% of total GGR. Meanwhile, licensed casinos — comprised of integrated resorts and brick-and-mortar casinos in Metro Manila, Clark, Cebu, La Union and Rizal — accounted for 43.47% or P93.36 billion of the industry's GGR. PAGCOR-operated casinos, moreover, contributed the remaining 3.06% or P6.56 billion to the overall industry performance. 'PAGCOR recognizes the earning potential of the e-games sector, but as the country's gaming regulator, our foremost responsibility is to ensure that growth comes with accountability,' said PAGCOR chairman Alejandro Tengco. 'Our role goes beyond revenue generation; and as partners of the government in nation-building, we are committed to always strike a balance between enabling industry expansion and ensuring it aligns with responsible gaming standards,' added Tengco. The PAGCOR chief noted that the gaming industry regulator recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ad Standards Council (ASC) to strengthen the monitoring of gambling-related advertisements across all platforms. It also recently ordered the takedown of all gambling ads in public spaces and primetime TV by August 15 this year.
