D.K. Shivakumar asserts that Karnataka will go ahead with Mahadayi project
The Deputy Chief Minister also reiterated that the State would try to take an all-party leaders' delegation to Delhi to convince the Centre about the need to provide all clearances for the proposed project. He said he would also meet all the MPs from Karnataka to seek their support.
'We will withdraw our application in this regard from the Supreme Court and start the work on the project,' said Mr. Shivakumar, who also holds the Water Resources portfolio.
'The tribunal concerned has given its verdict on Mahadayi and we have already called for tender. BJP leaders, including Basavaraj Bommai and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, had even celebrated saying that the Mahadayi project would take off soon post the promise of approval by the Centre,' he said.
He said it was wrong on the part of the State MPs not to raise their voice on this issue. 'I urge the MPs from the State to put pressure on the Centre. I will try to take an all-party delegation to Delhi,' he said.
Asked if the Union Minister was 'misleading' the State on Mahadayi, he said: 'The Union Jal Shakti Minister is impartial on the matter and he won't politicise this. I have already met him four-five times. The Union Environment Minister will also not indulge in politics on this issue. Both of them support development works. The issue is with Goa.'
Replying to a query on Rahul Gandhi's allegation of vote stealing during Lok Sabha election, he said: 'I agree with his statement. I have also started my own investigation regarding this in Bengaluru Rural Lok Sabha constituency. Many irregularities have taken place here too.'

The Centre found that the Aparajita Women and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, passed in Sept 2024, contains changes in penal provisions for rape under multiple BNS sections, proposing "excessively harsh and disproportionate" punishments, sources said. A major point of contention is an amendment to BNS section 64. The state bill increases the punishment for rape from the current minimum of 10 years to either imprisonment for the remainder of the convict's natural life or capital punishment. The ministry of home affairs (MHA) reportedly deemed this as unduly harsh and inconsistent with principles of proportionality. Another change that MHA has objected to involves the removal of BNS section 65, which prescribes stricter penalties for sexual assault of minors. The MHA raised constitutional concerns, arguing that removing judicial discretion in sentencing violated established legal norms and Supreme Court rulings, sources said. State govt, however, said it had received no official communication either from the Centre nor the governor's office about these observations. Earlier, bills similar to Aparajita, like Andhra Pradesh Disha Bill, 2019, and Maharashtra Shakti Bill, 2020 - which had mandatory death penalty for all rape and gang-rape cases - were passed unanimously by state legislatures, but did not get President's assent. Trinamool Congress indicated the party would make it a political issue. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "The returning of the Aparajita bill is unfortunate, deplorable and condemnable... This has proved that BJP is unwilling to impose maximum punishment in these cases, as their members are implicated in molestations and rapes."

Gurgaon: In an infrastructure boost to south Haryana, the Centre has decided to develop a new 45km four-lane National Highway from Nuh to Ferozepur Jhirka and Alwar on Rajasthan border and issued tenders for the Rs 325-crore project, which is expected to cut travel time and enhance road safety in the region. The govt has set a two-year completion target for the ambitious project. On completion, the highway is expected to reduce travel time to Rajasthan and tackle safety lapses on a stretch notoriously known as the "bloody highway," where over 2,500 fatalities have been reported in the past 12 years. This development is a result of persistent advocacy and public pressure over the years. The Mewat RTI Manch, a local activist group, has been at the forefront of this campaign since 2013, conducting hunger strikes and protests. Also, the group has filed a petition signed by over 20,000 residents to draw attention to the perils of existing narrow roads and demand immediate corrective measures. Initially, a ₹186-crore proposal was approved in 2019, but the project was put on hold following construction plan for Delhi-Mumbai Expressway through the area. Now, with a renewed focus and an increased budget, the Centre has moved forward with a revised estimate of ₹325 crore. This was followed by a major state-wide campaign in Nov 2018, which drew national attention. The same year, the Khuni Highway Sangharsh Samiti was formed to intensify the movement.
