Jaipur: The
Rajasthan High Court
Monday granted relief to Naresh Meena, an unsuccessful candidate involved in the controversial SDM slapping incident during the Deoli-Uniara assembly bypoll last year.
Justice Uma Shankar Vyas issued an interim stay on the attempt to murder trial against Meena, which was being heard at the SC/ST court in Tonk district.
The case stems from a Nov 13, 2024, incident where Meena was caught on video slapping SDM (Malpura) Amit Chaudhary during the assembly bypolls at Samravata village. Meena was arrested the following day. Challenging the charges under Section 109(1) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, Meena's counsel, Fateh Ram Meena, argued the available evidence, including official election videography and other footage, clearly showed it was a case of assault rather than attempted murder.
"All documents, evidence and witnesses confirm it was merely a slapping incident. The attempt to murder charge is excessive," the counsel stated.
While Meena received bail in the slapping case in May from the bench of Justice Anil Upman, he remains in jail due to his alleged involvement in a separate Samravata village violence case.

Raj HC dismisses petitions for NEET UG 2025 re-examination

Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court Monday rejected petitions seeking a re-examination of NEET UG 2025, emphasising that the interests of 2.2 million candidates cannot be compromised for a small number of affected students. The bench of Justice Sameer Jain dismissed the petitions filed by Roshan Yadav and others who sought either a re-conduct of the examination or compensation through bonus marks. The petitioners raised concerns about power outages affecting 15 exam centers in Sikar district, impacting approximately 5,390 candidates. According to the petitions, the nationwide examination was conducted across 552 cities in India and 14 international centres. In Sikar district alone, 98 exam centres accommodated 31,787 candidates. The affected centers allegedly experienced power disruptions lasting between five to 28 minutes, which the petitioners claimed hampered their ability to complete the examination effectively. The petitioners argued that the district collector failed to ensure uninterrupted power supply, which was essential for maintaining a conducive examination environment. However, state govt advocate MS Raghav countered that only 0.5% of total candidates filed complaints, with power outages being attributed to unexpected storms and adverse weather conditions. "A committee investigation revealed no discrepancy in examination duration between affected and normal centres and no substantial harm was caused to the petitioners," Raghav stated during the proceedings.

Fingerprint evidence helps crack Jobner burglary case

Jaipur: Jaipur (rural) police Tuesday cracked an old burglary case reported in Jobner earlier this year with the help of fingerprint evidence, leading to the arrest of two men currently lodged in separate jails in Rajasthan. The burglary took place on the night of Jan 24 at a house in Ganesh Vihar Colony, Hingonia, Doongri. The complainant approached Jobner police the next day, reporting that the house had been broken into and valuables stolen. The stolen items included a gold chain, a pair of earrings, a topaz stone, a mangalsutra, silver anklets and bangles, Rs 35,000 in cash, clothes, an LED TV, an ATM card, and a gas cylinder. Police launched an investigation combining local intelligence, technical surveillance, and forensic analysis. Fingerprints lifted from the scene were sent to the Fingerprint Bureau, which matched them to Roshan Meena, a resident of Goria in Sikar district, currently lodged in Bikaner District Jail. "Fingerprint evidence remains a crucial tool in criminal investigations, especially when there's no CCTV footage or mobile tower data," said an investigating officer. "In this case, the precision of the break-in indicated the involvement of experienced criminals," he added. Meena was brought to Jobner on a production warrant. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and named his associate, Hazarilal Meena of Nayabas in Neem Ka Thana, who is currently in Neem Ka Thana Jail. Police said efforts are underway to recover the stolen items and identify any other members of the gang. tnn
