Plot: Fresh from hanging up her Vera hat, Brenda Blethyn is now starring as the inimitable Emma Harte, a poor housemaid-turned-mogul, daughter, mother, lover, fighter and 20th century feminist icon who refused to know her place. Jessica Reynolds plays the younger Emma, with other cast including Emmett J Scanlan, Leanne Best, Will Mellor and Lenny Rush. A rags to riches tale based on the 1979 multi-million bestseller that is still searingly relevant. Novel: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Plot: Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro adapts this classic tale of scientist Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who creates a monster and brings it to life. Lurching onto screens in November, the monster film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor, Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster and Mia Goth as Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor's fiancee. Watch out also for David Bradley, Charles Dance and Ralph Ineson. Oscar says: 'Playing Frankenstein has been the experience of a lifetime.'
Harry Potter, Sky Max
Novel: Need you ask?
Plot: After an open casting call that sent the nation's parents flying into action, this TV adaptation of J.K.Rowling's novels will star newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. Each series will focus on one of the books, starting with the debut story The Philosopher's Stone. Some big names are lined up including John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Nick Frost as Hagrid and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge. It's bound to be magic.
The Thursday Murder Club, Netflix
Novel: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
Plot: With an incredible cast, including Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, Daniel Mays, David Tennant and Richard E. Grant, this adaptation of the cosy crime thriller has been hugely anticipated. The feature-length whodunit, starting on August 28, follows a group of senior sleuths in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught up in a real case. Director Chris Columbus teases: 'They are facing their own demise, but are obsessed with studying cold cases. It's comedic but also very emotional.'
Lynley, BBC1
Plot: Leo Suter and Sofia Barclay star as the unconventional detective duo DI Tommy Lynley and DS Barbara Havers in this new imagining of the hit crime novels. If it sounds familiar, it's already been on the BBC in the past as The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, but this latest version promises a contemporary update. Lynley is a brilliant detective, but an outsider in the force thanks to his aristocratic upbringing. He's paired with Havers, a working-class sergeant with a maverick attitude. But they make a formidable team, bonded by their desire to see justice done. Also features Daniel Mays and Niamh walsh. Author Elizabeth says: 'Watching my characters brought to life on television is a real celebration.'
Murder Before Evensong, 5
Novel: Murder Before Evensong by Rev Richard Coles
Plot: This six-parter promises all the hallmarks of cosy crime - small village drama, gossip and secrets and a murder that shakes a community to its core. Canon Daniel Clement (Matthew Lewis) lives in the quaint village of Champton with his widowed mother - opinionated, fearless and annoying Audrey (Amanda Redman). But when Daniel suggests installing a loo in the church, the seemingly innocent plan stirs up trouble - and then a body is found in the church, stabbed in the neck with a pair of secateurs. The cast includes Amit Shah, Meghan Treadway, Tamzin Outhwaite.
Waiting For The Out, BBC1
Novel: The Life Inside by Andy West
Plot: Based on a memoir, Josh Finan leads the cast as Dan, a philosopher who begins teaching a class of men in prison. He leads discussions about dominance, freedom and luck, topics that ignite passions and create tensions. Through his work, Dan begins to dig deeper into his own past – growing up with a violent father (Gerard Kearns) who ended up in prison, as did his brother Lee (Stephen Wight) and uncle Frank (Phil Daniels). Josh says: 'It's a hugely sensitive, empathic, hilarious and at times deeply emotional story.'
Ladies In Black, U
Plot: This stylish six-part Australian import is set in the 1960s and follows the lives of women working at a fictional department store in Sydney. At a time of huge social change, they must navigate love, ambition and identity. Miranda Otto, who plays the head of model gowns, Virginia, says: 'I loved the book and thought the TV series was a great chance to take the story further. Also stars Clare Hughes, Debi Mazar, Jessica DeGouw and Azizi Donnelly. Expect glamour, gloss and girdles.
The Seven Dials Mystery, Netflix
Novel: The Seven Dials Mystery by Agatha Christie
Plot: Billed as 'Agatha Christie, for a whole new generation'. It's England, 1925. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong. It will be up to the unlikeliest of sleuths - the inquisitive Lady Eileen 'Bundle' Brent (Mia Mckenna-Bruce) - to unravel a chilling plot that will change her life, cracking wide open the country house mystery. Mia is joined by top British talent, including Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham and Martin Freeman as Battle. Mia says: 'I am thrilled to be part of this new interpretation.'
The Walsh Sisters, BBC1
Novel: Rachel's Holiday and Anybody Out There by Marian Keyes
Plot: Irish author Marian's much-loved Walsh family are the focus of this Dublin-set saga, based on two of her books. It follows the lives of sisters Rachel (Caroline Menton), Claire (Danielle Galligan), Maggie (Stefanie Preissner), Helen (Mairead Tyers) and Anna (Louisa Harland) as they navigate their 20s and 30s. A comedy with series topics, expect themes of heartbreak, grief, addiction and parenthood. Marian says: 'I love the scripts, they've really kept the spirit of the books.'
Steve, Netflix
Plot: Cillian Murphy stars in this intense feature-length drama that is based on a book that 'broke his heart'. He plays a headteacher at a college that aims to reform students, with the story taking place over 24 hours. As he and the students try to stop the school facing closure, Steve also struggles with his mental health. The plot also follows Shy, a troubled teenager who is on a self-destructive path. Cillian says: 'I love films that happen in real time, there's immediately an intense pressure on the characters.'
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms, Sky Atlantic
Novel: A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms novels by George R.R. Martin
Plot: Game of Thrones fans, brace yourselves, the world of Westeros is expanding with this second prequel spin-off. Set 100 years before GoT and 100 years after House of the Dragon, this six-parter tells a gentler tale about Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). It's a lighter series, but author George teases: 'It's still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.'

Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke will turn 100 in December but he is still working and says that and going to the gym keeps him young Dick Van Dyke had to drop out of a event last minute, sparking concerns from fans. The 99-year-old was due to host a music fundraising event in Malibu on Saturday. But his 53-year-old wife Arlene Silver was forced to step in when her husband - star of legendary films like Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - could not attend due to illness. Addressing the audience Arlene said she was 'not the Van Dyke you were expecting'. She went on to say that Dick - who will turn 100 on December 13 - was not having a good day. Offering her apologies, Arlene explained: ''I have to inform you that Dick is not up to coming to celebrate with us today. I'm sorry. 'When you're 99-and-a-half years old, you have good days and bad days. And unfortunately, today is not a good day for him, and he's sick that he can't be here.' In a recent Q& A with fans, the nonagenarian said that although "life's been good to me" the sad thing about living to the age he has is losing his loved ones, particularly his peers. He revealed how he and good friend Ed Asner were set to do a remake of the 1970s American sitcom The Odd Couple before Ed's death at the age of 91 in August 2021. Dick said: "That would have been such fun - and we lost it. I've lost a lot of friends." His wife Arlene previously said: "He's outlived everybody. That's the curse of living to 100." Asked what the secret to a long life is, Dick said his work and continuing to perform keeps him young because it "energises" him - as well as regularly working out. Sharing his secrets to staying youthful as he approaches his centenary, Dick shared he follows a strict regime of regular workouts. He likes to workout for an hour, swim laps in the pool, then take a nap at home. And, his famous all-singing and all-dancing act even shines through at the gym - because he 'literally' dances between weight machines instead of walking. He said: "I've always exercised. Three days a week we go to the gym, still. Three days a week. And I think that's it - why I'm not stove up like my equals." Fellow actor Ted Danson, 77, who is known for Cheers and more recently in Netflix series A Man on the Inside, recalled seeing Dick at the gym in Malibu. He shared: "If I got there early enough I would see you literally workout on some weight machine and then - almost like you were doing circuit training - you would not walk to the next machine, but dance. You literally danced to the next machine and I watched that for a couple of weeks." His wife Arlene said: "He still does that." Despite his age, Dick still regularly performs with his musical group, barbershop quartet The Vantastix and says still working also keeps him youthful. He said: "I'm a ham. I love it. I get a jolt of energy from an audience." And though he's been in some of the best musicals ever made, Dick says he's not really a singer. Opening up on what it was like to work with co-star Dame Julie Andrews, 89, in the classic 1964 film Mary Poppins, he shared: "I'm not a real singer, so I tend to be under, fighting to get up there and sing on top of the note. Just took me forever in the recording. "Julie was just patient as could be and kept helping me, saying, 'Think high. Think up there.' And it turned out great. She was wonderful. We had a wonderful time together."

Hollyoaks anniversary scripts rewritten as ideas scrapped and 'surprises' ahead
More than one Hollyoaks star told us bosses had made a number of changes to plans for the Channel 4 soap's 30th anniversary episodes, with scripts redone and storylines altered Cast of Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks have been kept in the dark about most of the soap's 30th anniversary plans, with many of the ideas apparently "rewritten" as the show goes all out for the big event. According to more than one star of the soap, bosses have "gone back to the drawing board" and made a few changes to original plans. The show celebrates 30 years on air in October, with planning underway for an unmissable set of episodes. While one star of the show promised "shocking twists" and "big" scenes ahead, another cast member spilled that plans had been changed a couple of times, with bosses wanting to go all out to make the 30th a huge one for fans. According to the star, scripts have been edited, with the suggestion that ideas had been scrapped to make way for bigger and better twists and turns ahead. Another cast member backed the changes to the plans originally laid out, claiming she'd been told that the plans for the anniversary had "changed a few times". But it seems the plans are now all, if not mostly, set in stone with cast soon to find out exactly what is in store for them in the coming months. Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Mercedes McQueen actress Jennifer Metcalfe was the first star to admit there'd been some changes where the 30th plans were concerned. She told us that she'd heard behind the scenes how plans had been changed more than once. She teased: "I say don't tell me cos I am a blabbermouth so I say don't tell me the storylines. But I don't know yet what's happening with it, I've heard they've changed their minds a few times but that's all they are telling us." Rex Gallagher actor Jonny Labey also said about the script and plan changes, telling us: "For the 30th it was announced there would be some fan involvement! To be honest we have had a lot of script editing and it's been back to the drawing board with some of the ideas. "But it's all solidified now, the ideas are in place. We have got some time until October. The next couple of months we will start knowing a bit more and preparing for the 30th. "They are always gonna go big and the way the storylines are going at the moment, they are really powerful stuff, beautiful stuff, and amazing work from everyone, so it's on good trajectory. The 30th is a big year!" Myra McQueen actress Nicole Barber-Lane didn't know too much, but she's thrilled to be back with the show and for the soap to still be on air 30 years on from the launch. She said: "I don't know what is gonna be happening, but it is important to celebrate how long we have been here. "Sometimes we put so much pressure on stuff but it doesn't need it. I don't know details but I know Hannah [Cheers, Hollyoaks' Executive Producer] has some big stuff lined up." We also got some big spoilers from Lucas Hay actor Oscar Curtis and Dillon Ray actor Nathaniel Dass about what fans can expect. Oscar spilled: "We can't say what happens but we can say it's gonna be exciting." Nate then told us: "Listen, we hear things in and around the building. We hear some amazing stuff, and there is some really amazing stuff in store for Hollyoaks fans. "I think something that happens is gonna actually be quite shocking. It is something to do with the show itself and to do with the characters. There is some really exciting stuff coming up, but we can't say what. "I can promise you there's gonna be some big surprises." Oscar added: "It's the 30th... you know what I mean?" Nate then teased: "I know for a fact the top dogs have some amazing stuff planned." Tom Cunningham actor Ellis Hollins shared his surprise with us that his return storyline is linked to an upcoming storyline before the 30th, and not the big event itself like he thought. He explained: "When I got the call I was assuming it was something to do with the 30th, but it's still quite premature. "So I'm hoping there's gonna be something related to it but maybe on the sidelines, like reacting to certain people and not being in a crash!" Sunday Brunch's Tim Lovejoy addresses major change to show after Channel 4 panic
Tim Lovejoy has hosted Sunday Brunch since its inception in 2012 and recently talked about why hosting gives him peace after the programme announced a major shake-up Sunday Brunch's Tim Lovejoy has revealed how Channel 4 staff were worried when they found out he would be presenting the show solo. Tim, 57 and a seasoned co-host with Simon Rimmer on the popular programme, occasionally finds himself without his partner due to scheduling conflicts or illness. Speaking to Steven Sulley's podcast, Sunday Brunch star Tim recounted the unease surrounding his first solo stint: "The first time I just was. Most of the time Simon's been ill it's hasn't really happened much in the years we've been working together. "But when it happened before it would generally be a couple of days before... so they would then go 'Let's get in somebody else' so I'd have a new co-presenter for the day and that happened a lot." In reflection, he discussed the rarity of handling the show alone and the initial concerns from others: "I think I've done it only three or four times on my own completely and the first time it was just people going, I remember them panicking: 'Can he do it on his own?' "The idea that someone would do a whole three-hour entertainment show on their own, and then now they just go: 'He's ill, you're doing it'. "Now I just love it. I love the fact they can trust me to do it. I just love live TV. I'm more comfortable on TV than I am in real life." Discussing his affinity for live TV and the sense of comfort and catharsis it brings, Tim shared his personal insight into why he finds it so appealing, reports Birmingham Live. He explained: "For some reason I just find it really comfortable. If you do any kind of zen practice, mindfulness, always about living in the present, don't live in the past. "When you're doing a three-hour live TV show you're living in the present, we're enjoying it because we're living in the living it and it's so rare that you get to live in the present." Tim's reflections from a podcast two months ago have taken on new significance following his recent decision to take a hiatus from a show he has been part of since 2012. Stepping into Tim's shoes is the 37-year-old TV host Vicky Pattison, who expressed her excitement on Instagram about her new role. "As a long time friend of @sundaybrunchc4 it is an absolute HONOUR to be wearing a slightly different hat this week! I will be joining my good pal @rimmersimon as his co-host while the lovely @timlovejoy_official has a very well deserved break! ! ! "I am buzzing like an old fridge to chat to all of our gorgeous guests, eat some delicious food and hopefully give anyone watching and nursing a hangover a bit of light comedy reprieve."
