New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today approved Employment Linked Incentive (ELI) Scheme for Rs 1.07 lakh crore with an aim to boost job generation, enhance employability and social security across all sectors, with special focus on the manufacturing sector in the country. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a media briefing here after the Cabinet meeting: 'Under the Scheme, while the first-time employees will get one month's wage (up to Rs 15,000), the employers will be given incentives for a period to two years for generating additional employment, with extended benefits for another two years for the manufacturing sector.' Govt Unveils 'Apna Ghar' Rest Stops On Highways For Truck Drivers

The project is being rolled out in phases, with the initial set of facilities located along key freight corridors, including the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The Government on Tuesday announced the official launch of 'Apna Ghar', a new initiative aimed at providing safe and affordable rest stops for truck drivers along national highways. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the move is part of a broader effort to reduce road accidents caused by driver fatigue and improve the working conditions of commercial vehicle drivers. The facilities, now operational across 250 petrol stations across the country, offer basic amenities including air-conditioned rooms, beds, parking spaces, toilets, bathrooms with hot and cold water, food services, and a dedicated area for self-cooking. — Hardeep Singh Puri (@HardeepSPuri) July 1, 2025 The Union Minister announced the initiative in a tweet on Tuesday, saying: 'The reason for most accidents on highways is the drivers not getting enough rest and sleep." 'Air-conditioned 'Apna Ghar' on highways has emerged as a big solution to their problem. Here there is complete arrangement for food, self-cooking place, howdah-cold/hot water, toilet-bath room, parking and bed etc. for the drivers." 'Rs 112 Per Night' 'To rest at their own home, drivers will have to pay only ₹112 (for 8 hours). They will get this facility free of cost if they fill 50 liters+ of diesel in their trucks," Puri said. 'Those who drive the country's economy will no longer remain lying on the roadside. Drivers can make this booking through the mobile app/directly by reaching 'Apna Ghar'." The rest houses can be booked through a mobile application or accessed directly on arrival, offering flexibility for long-haul drivers. The project is being rolled out in phases, with the initial set of facilities located along key freight corridors. These include prominent highways such as the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, chosen for their high volume of truck traffic. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has reported that driver fatigue is one of the major causes of accidents involving commercial vehicles. Apna Ghar is intended to offer a practical and scalable solution to this issue. Officials say more locations will be added in the coming months, and data from the pilot sites will be used to refine services and determine additional needs. These facilities were developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and are operated by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

Cabinet approves construction of 4-lane Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram NH section

New Delhi:The Union cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved the construction of a four-lane Paramakudi—Ramanathapuram Section (46.7 km) in Tamil Nadu. The project will be developed in Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) and will cost ₹ 1,853 crore in total capital, Union minister of railways, information and broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said during a media briefing. Union minister for information & broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw briefs the media on cabinet decisions in Delhi on Tuesday. (PTI) Currently, connectivity between Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram, Mandapam, Rameshwaram, and Dhanushkodi is dependent on the existing two-lane National Highway 87 (NH-87) and associated State Highways, which experience significant congestion due to high traffic volumes, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor, a government release said. 'To address these challenges, the project will upgrade approximately 46.7 km of NH-87 from Paramakudi to Ramanathapuram to a 4-lane configuration. This will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal and Ramanathapuram,' the government release added. The project alignment integrates with five major National Highways (NH-38, NH-85, NH-36, NH-536, and NH-32) and three State Highways (SH-47, SH-29, SH-34), providing seamless connectivity to key economic, social, and logistics nodes across southern Tamil Nadu. Additionally, the upgraded corridor will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with two major railway stations (Madurai and Rameshwaram), one Airport (Madurai), and two minor ports (Pamban and Rameshwaram), thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. Upon completion, the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth, strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centers, boosting tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development. The project will also generate approximately 8.4 lakh person-days of direct and 10.45 lakh person-days of indirect employment, and will open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions, the government release further said.
