Timberwolves Doctor Gets Honest About Ant's NFL Potential

Yahoo03-05-2025
Anthony Edwards has always been a superb athlete. He is a fantastic basketball player but was always a two-sport person. During his youth football days, he was one of Georgia's best running backs but moved to basketball full-time because it "looked more fun."
Now that he is one of basketball's best players, he has always entertained the idea of trying out football again, possibly in the NFL. He always believes in his ability to play football, and now, a Timberwolves doctor thinks he can also do it.

Edwards has been extremely successful in his basketball career. He was the #1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and through the years, he has beaten some all-time greats in the Playoffs.

He is only 23, so the future is extremely bright. However, that might include a foray into football, a goal he has talked about multiple times through the years. Ant is focused on basketball, but that idea is always in his mind.

Edwards Has The Physical Traits To Become An NFL Player
Ant is one of the NBA's most gifted athletes. His jumping ability is his most popular asset because of his highlight dunks. However, he also has immense strength and absurd quickness. Those are two traits required to play in the NFL, which Javair Gillet thinks Edwards could translate into football.

Gillet is the Timberwolves' vice president of sports science and performance. If anyone wants to ignore his comments, they are making a mistake because he has the authority to know this.
"I like to use a transferrable strength index, this is multiple variables that then translates into the court. Anthony is above and beyond at the top," Gillet said on Edwards' Year Five YouTube series. "He jokes around he could play football, but I believe if he trains specifically for that sport. Why? Because he has good hips."
Edwards is one of the league's hard workers. He might draw headlines for having fun, but he has always worked hard in the weight room, getting shots up at the training facility, and watching game film to learn more. He is dedicated to basketball, which makes his football future unlikely, but he will always love his first sport.
Edwards Will Remain Focused On The Task At Hand
Despite all the noise surrounding his potential football future, Ant is focused on helping the Timberwolves succeed. He is now the team's leader after the Karl-Anthony Towns trade, and the team has done well because of it.
Everyone within the Timberwolves organization appreciates what Ant has done. He will keep doing it because he is set to stay with the team for a long time.

They are currently in the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs after beating the mighty Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. Edwards deserves his flowers for what he has done so far, and he will not stop anytime soon. His football dreams are still there, but it might take a while before they materialize for him.

Justin Fields participates in 7-on-7 drills at Jets practice, 2 days after dislocating toe

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields participated in 7-on-7 drills at training camp Saturday, two days after being carted from the field with a dislocated toe. Fields threw passes during quarterback positional drills and then again in a session with wide receivers, including tossing a perfectly placed deep ball to Tyler Johnson for a big gain that drew cheers from the fans in the stands. Fields didn't participate in team drills and will continue to be evaluated on a daily basis. The Jets have their first off day from practice Sunday. 'I thought he did a good job in 7-on-7s,' coach Aaron Glenn said. 'And the thing is, he has a ways to go until we get him out there and we're going to make sure we keep the process going, keep the protocol going to make sure he's ready.' Fields sent fans and social media into a frenzy Thursday when he dislocated a toe on his right foot early in practice. He was carted from the field to the facility, where he had multiple tests before the team announced the diagnosis — relieving fears that it could be an even more significant injury. Fields watched practice Friday from the sideline while wearing his helmet but had progressed enough Saturday to take part in some of the practice. Glenn didn't think Fields, expected to be the starter in his first season with the Jets, would fall behind because of the injury. 'He's going to be just fine,' the coach said. 'He missed one day. He's been in meetings, so he's going to be just fine.' Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor continues to lead the offense during team drills while Fields is sidelined. ___ AP NFL:

Damian Lillard talks time in Milwaukee, return home to Portland

Damian Lillard was always going to retire and enter the Hall of Fame as a Portland Trail Blazer, but his return to the city ended up happening much sooner than expected. After Lillard tore his Achilles in an April playoff game, and with rumors of Giannis Antetokounmpo's frustration growing, Milwaukee shocked the league by agreeing to waive and stretch Lillard, buying him out and making him a free agent. That cleared his path to a return to Portland. In recent interviews, Lillard spoke about all of it. When discussing his tenure with the Bucks, injuries were the main topic — Antetokounmpo missing Lillard's first playoffs with the team, then this year with his Achilles — with Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I think you gotta be a little bit lucky to win big. You gotta be healthy and you gotta be playing your best at the right time and I think we just had bad luck." He also talked about loving the experience of playing alongside Antetokounmpo, despite some criticism of his production and play. "But I think Giannis and I, we was the highest-scoring duo during that time. We won a [NBA] Cup. I think a lot of people for me personally was like, we want to see Dame do this and Dame do that, but I'm playing with a 30-plus point per game scorer, a guy who plays with the ball in his hands the same way I've done my whole career. He's aggressive and attacking and I still managed to score 25 points per game and seven assists over my two years pretty much. So I think it's kind of unfair how people was like Dame (isn't the same) because of the way I played in Portland. I had the ball all the time, so it just looked different. But I think for how productive I actually was I think it's been viewed unfairly." Now, Lillard is just happy to be home, as he told Anne M. Peterson of the Associated Press. "Just knowing that I'm going to be back home for all parts of my life, with my kids, playing for the Trail Blazers, driving on the same streets that I've driven on pretty much my entire adulthood, my whole family being here, my mom, my brother, my sisters, all my friends around the city of Portland," he said. "All of those things count. I wasn't expecting it to happen so soon." It did. He is going to spend this season more as an assistant coach working with young guards like Scoot Henderson, Shaedon Sharpe and Toumani Camara. He will join them in the rotation in a year. For now, he's just happy to be home.

Ben Roethlisberger, Joey Porter, and Maurkice Pouncey entering Pittsburgh Steelers' Hall of Honor

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced three new members will be added to the team's Hall of Honor. The Steelers announced Saturday during a program at Saint Vincent College that Maurkice Pouncey, Joey Porter, and Ben Roethlisberger make up the 2025 class being added to the Hall of Honor. Pouncey, a first round pick out of the University of Florida in 2010, played 134 games for the Steelers and was picked to the Pro Bowl nine times while blocking for four 1,000 yard rushers during his decade he spent in Pittsburgh. Porter played eight seasons for the Steelers and recorded 60 sacks and 75 tackles for loss in 122 games. One of Porter's biggest seasons in Pittsburgh came in 2005 when he helped lead the Steelers defense to Super Bowl XL, the franchise's first championship in over 25 years. "It's called the Hall of Honor for a reason," said Porter. "It's an honor to be in it. To be mentioned with all the guys that played before that are in the Hall of Honor is special. Being in Pittsburgh, you know the tradition of what it means to play for the Steelers. Roethlisberger, the franchise's leading passer in all categories, was selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent 18 seasons in Pittsburgh, leading the team to two Super Bowl titles, eight AFC North division titles, 12 postseason appearances, and five AFC Championship game appearances. Roethlisberger holds numerous Steelers' records including passing yards, completions, passing touchdowns, 300-yard passing games, and games played. The trio of former Steelers players will be formally inducted into the Hall of Honor on Sunday, December 14 and will be honored the following evening when the team takes on the Miami Dolphins at Acrisure Stadium.
