How tragic Somerset bus crash unfolded as one child is killed and two others seriously injured

A child has died after a coach travelling back to Minehead Middle School in Somerset flipped onto its roof on a remote road in Exmoor. Avon and Somerset Police declared a major incident and emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash on Thursday afternoon. Some passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries, including two children who were air lifted to hospital. Where was the coach travelling? The coach was driving on the A396 at Cutcombe Hill on Thursday at 3.15pm when it went off road and slid 20ft down a bank. It was travelling from Exmoor Zoo, taking the children back to Minehead Middle School after a school trip. The crash happened just five days away from the end of term. Who was injured? About 60 to 70 passengers were onboard the coach carrying Year five children from Minehead Middle School, which caters for pupils aged between nine and 14. The crash left 21 people injured, including two children who were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. Avon and Somerset Police said on Thursday evening that a child had died following the crash. Speaking outside Bridgwater Police Centre, Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington said: 'A number of other people have presented or been taken to hospital, some with serious injuries. 'This includes two children who were taken to hospital by air ambulance, many passengers either sustained minor injuries or were physically unharmed and were transferred to a rest centre. 'Work to help them return to Minehead has been taking place throughout the evening. An investigation into the cause of this incident will be carried out.' What emergency services were at the scene? An off-duty firefighter was travelling behind the coach when it flipped off the road, Gavin Ellis of Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service said. The firefighter was able to start getting passengers off the coach before additional emergency services arrived including fire, ambulance and police. Wayne Darch, deputy director of operations for the South Western Ambulance Service said: 'We declared a major incident that has since been stood down. 'We sent 46 resources to the scene, including 20 double-crewed ambulances, three air ambulances, a command team and two hazardous area response teams. 'We treated several patients at the scene and conveyed 21 patients to hospital via land and by air.' After passengers were evacuated many were held at a rest centre in a pub in Wheddon Cross, while efforts were made to transport them back to Minehead. What caused the crash? It is currently not known what caused the coach to slide off the road and down a 20ft bank. Rachel Gilmour, the MP for Tiverton and Minehead, described the road where a school coach overturned in Somerset as 'very difficult to manoeuvre' and said she was heartbroken for the families affected. She told BBC Breakfast the crash was 'pretty catastrophic'. Asked about the area, Ms Gilmour said: 'It's a very difficult road, very, very steep, very windy, and it's just the nature of rural roads in my constituency, you know, Minehead famously, only has one road that takes you into it on the A39 and if you're coming from where I live in Bampton or across the Moor, those are the roads that you have to use.' An investigation into what caused the crash will now take place, with police urging people not to speculate on the incident. The trust which runs the school whose pupils were on the coach that crashed near Minehead, Somerset, has said it is working closely with the emergency services. In a statement, Beacon Education Multi-Academy Trust, which runs Minehead Middle School, said: 'We are working closely with the emergency services and relevant authorities following an incident this afternoon to support our pupils, families, and staff at this very difficult time. 'We will update our school community further as soon as more information becomes available, and we kindly ask for your patience and understanding as we manage this evolving situation with care and sensitivity.'

Two former UNC basketball standouts almost involved in blockbuster NBA trade

What if this NBA trade actually went through? A pair of former UNC basketball standouts just missed being college teammates by one season, but both are carving themselves out solid NBA careers. Coby White is quietly turning into one of the NBA's top young superstars, coming off his sixth professional season in which he averaged 20.4 points per game, which ranked 31st in the entire league and led the Chicago Bulls. Cole Anthony, once a full-time starter for the Orlando Magic, established himself as one of the NBA's top sixth men in Year Five. Anthony averaged 9.4 points per game in 67 appearances (22 starts), his first campaign with starting action in two seasons, but Anthony will now try and re-crack a starting lineup with the Memphis Grizzles. Chicago isn't quite in rebuild mode, while Orlando is one of the league's many young, promising teams. According to LockedOnBulls, the Magic wanted White as part of its young core, offering the Bulls a blockbuster deal that included Anthony, former Florida State standout Jonathan Isaac and two first-round picks. Chicago only has one playoff victory since the 2016-2017 NBA season, but its last postseason series victory came two years prior, when Jimmy Butler and former Florida Gator Joakim Noah still played in the Windy City. Orlando hasn't won a playoff series since its 2014-2015 run to the Eastern Conference Finals, but has four playoff victories in its past two seasons combined. The Magic's exciting, young core consists of Duke superstar Paolo Banchero, Michigan standout Franz Wagner and recently-acquired Desmond Bane. How do you think Anthony and White's respective careers would change if this trade went through? White now has another chance to be the Bulls' featured star, while Anthony looks for a return to his new team's starting lineup. Anthony Edwards Announces Exciting News on Friday

Anthony Edwards arrived in Minnesota as the No. 1 pick in 2020 after a sensational freshman year at Georgia. In his lone season with the Bulldogs, he averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals per game, earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors. Advertisement Fast‑forward five years, and he's a three‑time NBA All‑Star and an All‑NBA Second Team selection (2024), having helped lift Team USA to Olympic gold in Paris just last summer. On Friday, Edwards unleashed a big statement via Instagram, showcasing the latest episode of his "Year Five" documentary series on YouTube, with the caption, 'We back again jack. Year Five Episode 4 out now. Check my Linkme in my bio.' While the post itself was brief, its timing spoke volumes. The episode comes out less than 48 hours after the Timberwolves closed out the Los Angeles Lakers in five games, punching their ticket to the Western Conference semifinals. Advertisement His 27.6 points per game led the Timberwolves to a 49-33 record in 2024-25 and the No. 6 seed in the NBA playoffs. In the playoffs, Edwards raised his game further, pouring in 43 points in Game 4 and helping orchestrate the closeout in Game 5, where Minnesota prevailed 103-96 on the road. Timberwolves Doctor Gets Honest About Ant's NFL Potential

Anthony Edwards has always been a superb athlete. He is a fantastic basketball player but was always a two-sport person. During his youth football days, he was one of Georgia's best running backs but moved to basketball full-time because it "looked more fun." Now that he is one of basketball's best players, he has always entertained the idea of trying out football again, possibly in the NFL. He always believes in his ability to play football, and now, a Timberwolves doctor thinks he can also do it. Credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-Imagn Images Edwards has been extremely successful in his basketball career. He was the #1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and through the years, he has beaten some all-time greats in the Playoffs. Advertisement He is only 23, so the future is extremely bright. However, that might include a foray into football, a goal he has talked about multiple times through the years. Ant is focused on basketball, but that idea is always in his mind. His jumping ability is his most popular asset because of his highlight dunks. However, he also has immense strength and absurd quickness. Those are two traits required to play in the NFL, which Javair Gillet thinks Edwards could translate into football. Advertisement Gillet is the Timberwolves' vice president of sports science and performance. If anyone wants to ignore his comments, they are making a mistake because he has the authority to know this. "I like to use a transferrable strength index, this is multiple variables that then translates into the court. Anthony is above and beyond at the top," Gillet said on Edwards' Year Five YouTube series. "He jokes around he could play football, but I believe if he trains specifically for that sport. Why? Because he has good hips." Edwards is one of the league's hard workers. He might draw headlines for having fun, but he has always worked hard in the weight room, getting shots up at the training facility, and watching game film to learn more. He is dedicated to basketball, which makes his football future unlikely, but he will always love his first sport. Edwards Will Remain Focused On The Task At Hand Despite all the noise surrounding his potential football future, Ant is focused on helping the Timberwolves succeed. He is now the team's leader after the Karl-Anthony Towns trade, and the team has done well because of it. Everyone within the Timberwolves organization appreciates what Ant has done. He will keep doing it because he is set to stay with the team for a long time. Advertisement They are currently in the second round of the 2025 NBA Playoffs after beating the mighty Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. Edwards deserves his flowers for what he has done so far, and he will not stop anytime soon. His football dreams are still there, but it might take a while before they materialize for him. Wheelhouse Entertainment's Courtney White on How Streaming Has Changed Unscripted TV

When Courtney White started working at HGTV in 2005, the standard episode order for a new series was no less than 65 episodes. Today, as the president of Wheelhouse Entertainment, White is tasked with juggling a busy portfolio of unscripted series for broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. As White explains on the latest episode of Variety podcast 'Strictly Business,' the days of getting double-digit episode orders for even the most successful series are long past. More from Variety NBA All-Star Anthony Edwards Launches Sports Docuseries 'Year Five' With Wheelhouse (EXCLUSIVE) Wheelhouse Entertainment Promotes Courtney White to President, Glenn Hugill to Chief Creative Officer and Head of Wheelhouse Studios Jimmy Kimmel's Kimmelot Banner Exits Out of Brent Montgomery's Wheelhouse 'The reality, which is a harsh one for the business, is there are very few really high-volume shows anymore,' White says. 'So it really is about the six- or eight-episode order. That that is the norm.' White details the structure of Wheelhouse Entertainment, part of Brent Montgomery's Wheelhouse group, where she oversees seven busy production labels that are experts in specific genres and sub-genres of production. It allows Wheelhouse to make the most of each title that flows through the company. A TV series is no longer just a series but a concept that can be built out as a documentary, a podcast, a digital extension, merchandise and e-commerce and more. Among Wheelhouse's latest offerings are the Netflix series 'Million Dollar Secret' and Hulu's 'Got to Get Out.' 'We think of ourselves as the Avengers. We've got specialists in all of those sub genres, and they share resources. Our digital teams support all of those labels,' White says. 'Those digital teams are really charged with building out the content from a vertical standpoint, but then we also have things like our legal and our production management team that is centralized. The idea is that the labels all areare quite specific and they're scrappy and really development focused. And when they get series up and running, they plug into our centralized machine. And our centralized machine is also quite scrappy, because we find every project is bespoke and needs a specialty team.' White spent 17 years as a top programming executive for Food Network and HGTV. She joined the Wheelhouse group in 2022 when she stepped down as president of Food Network in advance of the merger that created Warner Bros. Discovery. White also explains why Wheelhouse has invested significant resources to host networking events — dubbed 'Ladies Who Launch' — for creatives in New York, L.A. and other cities. In a world where most pitches now take place on Zoom, Wheelhouse wants to create that environment of spontaneous chit-chat that sometimes leads to huge breakthroughs. 'When you now pitch an idea on Zoom, it's a very controlled half hour pitch. You pitch the idea, then you click off. And what executives and producers say a lot is that [traditionally], the real business didn't get done in that pitch. It used to be that time when you'd walk to the elevator. That's when something unplanned happened,' she says. 'So many shows were birthed that way, and so this is about bringing people together who might not otherwise intermingle, and it's about the magic of collaboration.'
