Mumbai police raid paan shops and crack down on drug trade near schools and colleges

Time of India17 hours ago
Mumbai: Over 2,000 paan shops close to schools and colleges suspected of selling drugs were raided in the city and their encroachments removed, said CM Devendra Fadnavis in the legislative council on Thursday.
He mentioned that such shops are being closely monitored.
The issue of narcotic drugs such as mephedrone and brown sugar being sold at roadside tea stalls in Badlapur and Ambernath, drugs being seized at the APMC market in Navi Mumbai, and the arrest of 50 Bangladeshi citizens while selling these drugs, along with the seizure of MD drugs worth Rs 8 crore in Vasai and drugs worth Rs 2 crore seized in Thane in recent months, was raised by Congress MLC Bhai Jagtap through a calling attention motion.

Responding to questions from legislators during the discussion on drugs being easily available in the state, Fadnavis said in some cases police involvement was also found. "We are directly dismissing police officials found directly or indirectly involved in the drugs trade under Article 311. Police officials are also doing a good job in solving such cases. Five days ago, two Indonesian citizens were arrested with 21 kg of hydro gaanja worth Rs 21 crore.

These drug peddlers go to jail, come out on bail, and then go back into the trade. We are bringing an amendment during this session to try them under MCOCA. Both Thailand and the US have made the consumption of hydro gaanja legal, and there are huge consignments coming from these countries," he said.
Fadnavis further stated that a drug trafficker, Navin Jichkar, bought an island in Indonesia, obtained an Australian passport, and through postal courier, sends hydro gaanja from Thailand and the US to India.
Investigations showed the involvement of postal, customs, and police officials. All have been arrested. Police also went to Indonesia and arrested Jichkar, he said.
Synthetic drugs can be made at home in a kadhai, said Fadnavis. Unless information is available, these businesses continue. Raids have been conducted on all defunct chemical units where these drugs were being manufactured, and records of all these closed units have been kept. Highlighting the challenges, Fadnavis said it is an inter-state and international racket. States are coordinating to fight this racket, he said.
He mentioned that earlier only the drug peddler would be arrested; now it is compulsory to find his forward and backward linkages. In three cases, women in the third stage of cancer selling drugs for money were arrested.

Nari Shakti: Astha Poonia becomes Indian Navy's first woman fighter pilot

Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh) [India], July 4 (ANI): Sub Lieutenant Astha Poonia officially became the first woman to be streamed into the fighter stream of Naval Aviation. Paving the way for a new era of women fighter pilots in the force, and shattering barriers, Poonia also received the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' from Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Air). According to the Ministry of Defence, the Indian Navy celebrated the graduation of the Second Basic Hawk Conversion Course at the Naval Air Station, INS Dega, in Visakhapatnam. Lieutenant Atul Kumar Dhull and Sub-Lieutenant Astha Poonia received the prestigious 'Wings of Gold' from Rear Admiral Janak Bevli, ACNS (Air) on July 3. Earlier on Thursday, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) cleared 10 capital acquisition proposals worth approximately Rs 1.05 lakh crore for the procurement of indigenously sourced quick reaction surface-to-air missiles, naval vessels, and other equipment. The DAC accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals, including the procurement of Armoured Recovery Vehicles, Electronic Warfare System, Integrated Common Inventory Management System for the Tri-Services, and Surface-to-Air Missiles, according to an official statement from the Defence Ministry. The Council met for the first time after Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 in response to the heinous Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people. India's response was deliberate, precise, and strategic. Without crossing the Line of Control or international boundary, Indian forces struck terrorist infrastructure and eliminated multiple threats. Additionally, the ministry stated that AoNs were also accorded for the procurement of Moored Mines, Mine Countermeasure Vessels, Super Rapid Gun Mounts, and Submersible Autonomous Vessels, to enable the mitigation of potential risks posed to naval and Merchant Vessels. Earlier, on June 30, defence sources reported that the tri-services had submitted various proposals for procurement, including the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile System, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The project, worth around Rs 30,000 crore, would be critical for the Indian Army's air defence capabilities as the system can be effective against targets up to 30 km. The three aircraft would be acquired from an original equipment manufacturer and then be modified by the DRDO lab Centre for Airborne Systems in partnership with private partners. (ANI)

'Your wife will leave you': Vivek Ramaswamy trolled after posting family pic wishing 'Happy Fourth'

Vivek Ramaswamy was asked to go to Mumbai or Gujarat by trolls as he wished Happy Fourth. GOP leader Vivek Ramaswamy is not new to social media trolling as he's asked to go to India every time he posts something on X. As the Ohio Guv hopeful posted a family picture celebrating the Fourth of July, it was a repetition of the same situation -- people asking him what he has to do with July the Fourth and that he should go back to India, celebrate either in Mumbai and Gujarat -- summing up a few reactions to his post. "I wonder if any of your family or friends will get deported under Trump's regime? Maybe your wife will leave you if her family members get deported," one particularly hateful comment read. Vivek Ramaswamy's wife Dr Apoorva Tewari is also from India but was born in the US. "You should celebrate with your family in Gujarat or Mumbai," another comment read. — DavidShares (@DavidShares) "Did you redeem the freedom fries and the anchor baby citizenship," another read. Is Vivek Ramaswamy an anchor baby? Vivek Ramaswamy came under renewed hatred after President Donald Trump ended birthright citizenship. The US has given automatic citizenship to anyone born in the country but Trump said this was not meant for everyone and hence he wants to change the rule. This was contested but is now in a dubious state as the Supreme Court said lower courts can't nationally stay the president's executive order but did not mention Trump's birthright citizenship order. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Vivek Ramaswamy is called an anchor baby as he was born to a non-citizen mother. But is it true? Yes, Ramaswamy admitted that his mother took the citizenship test after he was born and his father did not take it and is not a US citizen. It was his father's decision for familial reasons, he said. But his parents immigrated to the US legally and Ramaswamy was born in Cincinnati. 'I want to be very clear about this. I think that birthright citizenship does not and should not apply to the kids of parents who entered this country illegally,' Ramaswamy said earlier. Indian-origin Ramaswamy has already made a record by raising the highest fund while the Ohio Guv election midterm is one year away.

Sebi's Jane Street ban: Zerodha's Nikhil Kamath shocked trading firm ‘kept at it despite warnings'; quips ‘they're used to lenient US regulatory regime'

Market regulator Sebi's sweeping action against global proprietary trading firm Jane Street has triggered wider concerns about India's options markets, with Zerodha founder and CEO Nithin Kamath warning that the crackdown, while justified, could adversely affect retail trading activity and hit exchanges and brokers. 'You've got to hand it to SEBI for going after Jane Street. If the allegations are true, it's blatant market manipulation. The shocking part? They kept at it even after receiving warnings from the exchanges. Maybe this is what happens when you're used to the lenient US regulatory regime. Think about the structure of U.S. markets: dark pools, payment for order flow, and other loopholes that allow hedge funds to make billions off retail investors. None of these practices would be allowed in India, thanks to our regulators,' Kamath posted on X. 'That said, there's a flip side. Prop trading firms like Jane Street account for nearly 50% of options trading volumes. If they pull back— which seems likely —retail activity (~35%) could take a hit too. So this could be bad news for both exchanges and brokers. The next few days will be telling. F&O volumes might reveal just how reliant we are on these prop giants. I'll share more data as and when anything interesting turns up,' he added. Jane Street is accused of executing a massive Rs 36,500 crore scam by booking Rs 43,289 crore in options profits while deliberately incurring Rs 7,208 crore in losses in the futures and equities markets, according to an ET report. Sebi, in a 105-page interim order issued Thursday, said the firm manipulated market prices by gaming the auction mechanism on the NSE and the BSE, thereby distorting the true price discovery process. The interim order imposed sweeping restrictions on Jane Street and its related entities. The firms have been barred from accessing the securities market — directly or indirectly — and their bank, demat, and custodial accounts have been frozen. While no debits are permitted without Sebi's approval, credits can be accepted. In addition, the regulator has ordered the impounding of Rs 4,843.57 crore in alleged illegal gains, to be placed in an escrow account with a lien in Sebi's favour. The entities have also been prohibited from disposing of or alienating any of their assets in India until the full amount is deposited. Sebi has given Jane Street 21 days to file objections and has offered the opportunity for a personal hearing. In response, Jane Street told Reuters in an emailed statement: 'Jane Street is committed to operating in compliance with all regulations in the regions we operate around the world. Jane Street disputes the findings of the SEBI interim order and will further engage with the regulator.' Meanwhile, stock exchanges have been instructed to closely monitor any future dealings by the firm to ensure there is no recurrence of similar behaviour.
