According to Garrith Jamieson, director of ALS Paramedics Medical Services, they arrived at the scene this morning at about 06:30 to find the eThekweni Fire Department already fighting the blaze.
'Paramedics stood by and assessed six people who had managed to escape from the residence and had sustained minor injuries.
'Paramedics were called to enter the house once the fire had been extinguished by the fire department, and unfortunately, [came across] the gruesome discovery of a couple believed to be in their late 60s that had suffered fatal injury as a result of the fire,' said Jamieson.
The couple was declared dead at the scene.
'At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown; however, SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further.'
This incident comes after an electrical fire set two Durban flats ablaze yesterday morning.
The fire that started in the apartments adjoining the Grey Street Mosque in central Durban was successfully put out by the eThekwini Municipality's fire department on Monday.
The fire, allegedly sparked by electrics, was first reported to the fire department at 10:00. Two flats adjoining the mosque caught alight in Dr Yusuf Dadoo Street, Durban Central.
According to the Grey Street Mosque's chairperson, Av Mohammed, it took the fire department 20 minutes to put the fire out. There were no injuries reported.

Police probe murder after missing man found dead in Olievenhoutbosch
A murder case is being investigated after the body of Cornelius Balanganani, who had been missing for nearly a month, was discovered in a river in Olievenhoutbosch on Monday. Pretoria Rekord reports that, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, officers were called to assist at the R55 and Waterberg Road crossing, where the body was found lying in the river. 'It was clear that the body had been there for quite some time,' says Van Dyk. He said that while officers were still on the scene, Balanganani's wife and brother arrived and identified the body as his. 'Trauma counsellors were called to assist the family on scene. 'Balanganani was declared deceased on site, and a murder case has since been opened,' he adds. The exact circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death are still under investigation. Details from a missing person notice show that Balanganani was last seen on June 29 near the R55 Chillout area in Olievenhoutbosch. Van Dyk confirmed that later that same day, his family opened a missing person's case at the Olievenhoutbosch Police Station after he failed to return home. Police have urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. Dead man found entangled in fishing net at Modderfontein Reserve
SAPS divers from the Gauteng Water Policing and Diving Services (WPDS) were deployed to the Modderfontein Reserve where an alleged illegal fisherman had possibly drowned. Kempton Express reports that on July 17, it was alleged that the victim was dropping nets from a canoe during the night and never returned. WPDS went to search for the man last week. According to SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, the members were shown where the nets were visible. They deployed a vessel with WPDS and two K9 dogs to comb the area and identified gases released from a submerged body. Giblin says that before any underwater search could commence, the members removed the net for the divers' safety. 'As the net was reeled in with a large quantity of live fish still entrapped, the members neared the end of the 400m length to find the victim's body also entrapped in the netting,' says Giblin. 'The body was handed to the Sebenza detective on the scene, and a family member immediately identified the 45-year-old victim.' In other incidents, three unknown victims were recovered in separate incidents in Sedibeng, Vereeniging, on July 17; in Tshwane at the Bon Accord Dam on July 19; and in Johannesburg at a Turfontein quarry on July 21. Inquest dockets for these cases are under investigation by the local SAPS stations. Anyone with information about these incidents is urged to contact the relevant SAPS station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Watch: 3 arrested for urging toddler to smoke, child rescued in Johannesburg
A video showing a three-year-old boy being encouraged by adults to smoke from a makeshift pipe has sparked national outrage and led to the arrest of the child's mother and two men. The Witness reports that the harrowing footage, which shows the child being coached to inhale what appeared to be drugs, triggered a night-long rescue mission by community activists and police last night. By this morning, police confirmed that the boy's mother and two men, aged between 28 and 36, had been arrested and would be charged with child abuse under domestic violence laws. They are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court tomorrow. Anti-drug activist Curt van Heerden, founder of the Institution of Grace, led the urgent response after receiving the video clip. 'What makes it worse and even more heartbreaking is that they actually coach him how to smoke,' says Van Heerden. He and fellow activists tracked down the child's location to a block of flats in Johannesburg, where they questioned residents to identify the adults seen in the footage. With help from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the child's mother was located and taken to Sophiatown Police Station. By midnight, the child's father had also joined Van Heerden at the police station, but no medical assistance had yet been provided. 'At 02:15, I drove the child and his grandmother to a hospital in the Johannesburg CBD. By 03:00, he was finally receiving medical care,' says Van Heerden. The boy is now in the custody of social services. 'It rips my heart. He didn't want to let go. He just kept on holding me,' Van Heerden says, describing the emotional moment he left the child at the hospital. The child's grandmother, visibly distraught, added: 'It is very hard for a gran to let a child go.' Van Heerden says his team will continue to support the family as they navigate the emotional and legal aftermath. Police said investigations are continuing. 🚨 SHOCKING VIDEO: This viral video has emerged where a Newclare, Johannesburg, mother is seen making her child light and smoke a pipe. Community activists rushed to find the child and ensure his safety. It's believed the mother and others in the video have now been arrested.… — Nabeelah Shaikh (@Nabeelah_Shaikh) July 30, 2025 Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel.
