Hakim Danish secures double podium despite setbacks

The Sun12-05-2025

RACE 1 delivered a thrilling spectacle as young Malaysian talent Hakim Danish was handed a Long Lap Penalty following a collision incident with Vietnamese rider Luca Agostinelli. Despite the setback, Danish had an impressive start to the race weekend, having consistently topped the timesheets in Free Practice 1, Free Practice 2, and Qualifying.
As the lights went out, Danish made a lightning start into Turn 1 but came under pressure at Turn 3, which pushed him down to fourth place. He quickly regrouped and began chasing the leading group, eventually closing in on race leader Brian Uriarte. On lap 3, Danish served his Long Lap Penalty smoothly, rejoining the race in fifth position.
Demonstrating remarkable consistency, Danish worked his way back up and made a decisive move on lap 7 to overtake Brian and take the lead. However, a slight mistake on lap 9 allowed Brian to reclaim the front position.
Danish continued to stay close behind, but luck was not on his side as the race was red-flagged on lap 11 due to an incident involving another rider. The final results were based on the standings from the previous lap, confirming Danish's position in second place.
A rainy morning set the stage for a dramatic Race 2 held on a wet track. As the red lights went out, Hakim Danish got off to a strong start, but disaster struck at Turn 3 when he crashed and collided with Spanish rider Brian Uriarte.
Refusing to give up, Danish quickly got back on his bike and rejoined the race, albeit in 22nd position. From lap 2 onwards, he began overtaking rider after rider, climbing up to 13th place. The race was filled with heart-stopping moments, including a near high-side by Danish and several other crashes due to the slippery conditions.
Despite the challenges, Danish maintained an impressively consistent pace, growing faster with each lap. By lap 5, he had worked his way up to fifth place, with several riders close behind. From lap 7, Danish started to pull away, creating a gap from the chasing pack. On lap 12, he moved up to second place following a crash by Carter Thompson.
Danish crossed the finish line in second place, a remarkable comeback that showcased his fighting spirit and determination in the face of adversity.
The next Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup race will take place on 7th and 8th June 2025 at Aragon, Spain.

Vios Challenge turns up heat in Sepang

A single one-hour race marked a monumental milestone for the 2025 Vios Challenge, which made its international debut at the Malaysian round of the Autobacs Super GT. Departing from its usual 10-lap sprint format on a shortened circuit, Round 2 saw all 36 drivers across three classes start together on the full 5.543 km length of the iconic Petronas Sepang International Circuit, doubling the challenge for every competitor. Adding to the international flair, the grid featured racers from Thailand, Singapore and India. The Vios Challenge was made even more special with UMW Toyota Motor and Toyota Gazoo Racing Malaysia's title sponsorship of the Malaysian round of the Super GT series. In the Super Sporting Class for professionals, Laser Motor Racing's Eddie Lew jumped into an early lead as soon as the race got underway, getting ahead of Wheelcorp's Nabil Azlan. Pole sitter and Laser Motor Racing's second driver Ady Rahimy Rashid dropped seven places into eighth position. Nabil, however, punched into the lead by the third lap with Telagamas Toyota's Freddie Ang moving into second position as Lew also dropped into third by the halfway mark of the race. In the end, it was Ang who claimed the chequered flag ahead of Nabil with Toyotsu Racing's William Ho a further 18 seconds behind in third place. "The initial plan was to attack in the second half of the race but as things unfolded in the race, it went from this to getting to the front and trying to pull away. "In a one-hour race it is extremely challenging and it is critical to manage both the car and tyres," said Ang, who finished the 20-lap race a mere 0.7 seconds ahead of Nabil. "He (Nabil) was on my rear bumper the entire time and every time I tried to pull away he was right there with me. I couldn't do anything more and so I settled for being defensive and trying to just stay ahead. "To be honest it was very taxing on the body, especially with the heat. We are all so used to the sprint race and therefore the second 30-minute stint this weekend really had you feeling body fatigue…it was extremely hot." The Sporting Class for amateurs, meanwhile, was dominated by Hong Huat & Armada KK Racing's Jwan Hii who delivered a dominant drive to finish eight seconds ahead of Kulim Top Wheels' Datuk Dr Ken Foo. In third place was Thai driver Varunchit Wattanathanakun representing RUK Team Nexzter PMC 52. The race was essentially Hii's from start to finish as he dominated from pole position to post the fastest lap time of 2 min: 52.409 seconds. Down the field in the Rookie Class, drama unfolded in the penultimate stages of the race as Aydan Khaliq took victory ahead of Rahul Dev, with Harkiesh Geeva in third position. Harkiesh and Aydan had been trading places for the race lead and with several minutes left to the finish, the former had been poised for what appeared to be certain victory until a mechanical problem denied him of the top spot on the podium. "To be honest, I was very fortunate to finish where I did after Harkiesh lost his third gear despite leading the race for quite a fair bit. But that is part and parcel of racing," said Aydan. "Racing on the full track was also a bit more tiring…Mentally I was fit enough but after competing in the GR86 Cup Malaysia race I practically had to rush to the starting grid for the Vios Challenge. "Nevertheless, competing on a Super GT race week is excellent exposure not only for me as a rookie but the entire Vios Challenge series as it projects local talent and racing internationally," he added.

Letshanaa to dethrone Jin Wei as top Malaysian despite losing in US quarters

PETALING JAYA: K. Letshanaa's campaign at the US Open may have ended in the quarter-finals, but the ranking points she collected could soon make her the new Malaysian No. 1 in the women's singles. The 21-year-old's impressive run was halted by India's Tanvi Sharma, who handed her a 13-21, 16-21 defeat in 33 minutes at the Mid American Centre in Iowa yesterday. The result came as a letdown after Letshanaa had built strong momentum with a stunning upset over former world champion Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in the first round, followed by a confident victory against India's Aakarshi Kashyap in the second round. Despite the loss, Letshanaa's world ranking is set to rise. Currently placed No. 50, she is expected to overtake Goh Jin Wei, the current Malaysian No. 1, who sits at No. 44. National women's singles coach K. Yogendran believes Letshanaa has shown clear progress, although he acknowledged it was unfortunate she could not replicate her earlier performances against Sharma in her bid to reach her first Super 300 semi-finals. 'Overall, Letshanaa did well. She beat higher-ranked players, and from the very first round, every match was a challenge. 'We were hoping for a better showing in the quarter-finals, but her game didn't quite come together. 'It may have been due to fatigue from the earlier rounds,' said Yogendran. Yogendran also brushed aside suggestions that the win over Okuhara was a stroke of luck, insisting it was a reflection of Letshanaa's hard work and steady progress in training. He hopes the experience in Iowa will serve as motivation for Letshanaa to achieve even greater success in upcoming tournaments, particularly in the Canadian Open which begins next Tuesday. 'That win wasn't down to luck, she has worked hard and has shown clear improvement. What she needs now is consistency, and that's something we're focusing on in her development. 'I see this as a stepping stone for her. 'She must learn from this defeat, and hopefully, she'll bounce back and showcase her true game in Canada,' he added. Letshanaa is scheduled to face the United States' Ishika Jaiswal in the first round of the Canada Open. Another representative Wong Ling Ching faces a tough task against fifth seed Line Christophersen of Denmark in the opener.
