Why Dinesh Karthik is impressed with Shubman Gill as a Test captain so far
In the dying moments of play on Day 3, Gill had been in an altercation with England opener Zak Crawley over what he felt were the batter's deliberate attempts to cause delays. More heated exchanges followed in the rest of the Test as the hosts ran their way to a thrilling 22-run victory.
Ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester, which started on Wednesday, Gill had said in his press conference that while he was not proud of everything he did, he felt he was only standing up for his team against tactics he felt are 'not in the spirit of the game.'

Karthik felt that Gill's response showed his potential as a leader. 'I have really enjoyed him as a captain so far. On the field, he is improving. But off the field is where is where I have been most impressed,' he said on Sky Sports. 'I think yesterday's press conference was absolutely box office.'
'I like it, it is good to be feisty, You need to have an identity as a captain. And Shubman Gill, from that third day at Lord's, has shown that he has a lot of aggression inside him. The result may not have gone his way but the point is it has made for a thrilling Test series so far and his captaincy is right at the forefront of it, backed by his batting skills as well,' Karthik added.
Gill agreed with Karthik's assessment when he put the charged atmosphere down to his motivation to win. 'It didn't just come out of nowhere. And we had no intention of doing that whatsoever. But you're playing a game, you're playing to win, and there are a lot of emotions involved,' he had said on Tuesday.

Rishabh Pant arrives in crutches at Old Trafford; will India batter join the fight as visitors push to save 4th Test?
Rishabh Pant's chances of batting in the second innings of the fourth Test on the fifth day looked bleak as the Indian vice-captain arrived in crutches on Sunday at Old Trafford. Pant, who took a hit while batting on the opening day of the Test match, has fractured his toe and wasn't in a situation to even stand. Despite the unbearable pain, Pant came out to bat on the second day, after having strong pain killers and scored a fifty. Dhruv Jurel has been keeping wickets for India in the Test match. While it was unclear whether Pant would bat or not, he might nit have to come out padded up unless India suffer a miraculous collapse. In a picture shared on social media by his Indian Premier League (IPL) Lucknow Super Giants, Pant was seen walking in crutches with his training kit on. After having conceded a first-inning lead of 311 runs, India started their second innings on a disastrous note losing both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan departing with no runs on board. Captain Shubman Gill and KL Rahul revived the Indian ship with a 188-run stand for the third wicket before the latter missed century by 10 runs. Gill too perished after completing his hundred. Since then its all about all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, who have forged an unbeaten century-run stand to fight against England. If assumptions are to be believed In case the ongoing partnership is broken, Shardul Thakur will come out to bat before the pacers - Anshul Kamboj , Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj - come in, before Pant might arrive. Notably, all are capable of surviving the English bowling attack in the middle.

Gill smashes 722, equals Don-Sunny century record
Manchester, July 27 (UNI) Shubman Gill's aggregate of 722 runs in the ongoing five-match Test series against England has not only made headlines for its sheer volume, but also for the historic context it has created. In his first assignment as India's Test captain, Gill now stands second only to the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, who scored 810 runs in his debut series as captain against England in 1936–37. No other debut Test skipper has scored more in an away series. Adding further weight to his phenomenal campaign, Gill has become only the third captain in the history of Test cricket to score four centuries in a single series, matching the legendary feats of Don Bradman (1947–48 vs India) and Sunil Gavaskar (1978–79 vs West Indies). Remarkably, Gill is the first to achieve this milestone on foreign soil. When he guided Chris Woakes through point for a single during India's second innings at Old Trafford, Gill brought up his fourth century of the series, his ninth overall in Test cricket. The celebrations were emotional and spirited: helmet off, bat raised, eyes to the sky, and a kiss blown to the spectators, which responded with a thunderous standing ovation. Gill's historic run has also seen him equal the Indian record for most hundreds in a single Test series. With four centuries, he now stands alongside Sunil Gavaskar (1971 and 1978/79) and Virat Kohli (2014/15), all of whom previously held the joint record. While Gill's individual brilliance has anchored India's fight in English conditions, the series has also seen another monumental feat. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, with 1000* runs and 34 wickets in England, has become just the third player in Test history to score over 1000 runs and take 30 or more wickets in a single away country. The others in this rare club are Wilfred Rhodes (England in Australia) and Garry Sobers (West Indies in England). UNI BDN GNK

ENG vs IND: England toils as Jadeja, Sundar anchor India's innings
The post lunch session saw Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar dig in and defy the England bowlers to hand India a 11-run lead by putting up an unbeaten 100-run partnership, taking India to 322/4 at tea. Starting the session, both all-rounders had been given clear instructions and didn't take any risk whatsoever after losing skipper Gill just before lunch. England's lead kept reducing to bits as both batters toiled hard and kept rotating the strike among them. Stokes too tried to return to his spell despite his shoulder struggles, but his lethal bouncers couldn't find the inspiration this time to take one of the batters out on the day. Fifties from Jadeja and Washy hand India the lead As India grew closer and closer to a lead, England's impatience kept growing as the game approached tea. The two batters eventually removed the deficit, with Sundar hitting a six and a boundary that was followed by a loud cheer by the Indian crowd. Both of them reached their fifties as well just before tea with Jadeja unleashing the sword in Manchester as well. Jadeja also became only the 2nd player in Test history to score 5 fifty plus scores while batting at no.6 or lower. India losing KL and Gill before lunch Earlier, Day 5 of the 4th Test between England and India began with promise for the visitors but ended the opening session with them under pressure at 223/4 at lunch, after losing both set batters, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill. Resuming with a 174-run stand, India looked steady in their bid to draw the match. However, skipper Ben Stokes struck early, dismissing KL Rahul LBW in the 71st over with a low-bouncing delivery. Rahul, who fell short of a century, received a warm ovation but would be disappointed to not carry on. Washington Sundar joined Shubman Gill, who despite a finger injury from a rising Stokes delivery, continued to show determination. Gill went on to score his 9th Test century and fourth of the series, equalling the record for most hundreds in a Test series by a captain alongside Don Bradman and Virat Kohli. But just before lunch, Jofra Archer delivered a major blow by getting Gill caught behind. Ravindra Jadeja survived a dropped catch in the slips soon after, as India's hopes of saving the Test now rest on Jadeja and Sundar.
