It just got easier to visit this secretive country home to the 'Door to Hell'
The Central Asian country is also one of the least visited, with just 15,000 tourists travelling there each year — but that could all be about to change.
For years, Turkmenistan has been notoriously difficult to visit. Travellers from the UK needed a visa, as well as a letter of invitation to support the application (or a letter from relevant companies or ministries if you were going there on business).
Even then, the decision on whether a visa would be granted could take up to a month, and were often rejected with little explanation.
But now, a new law has been introduced that will make it easier for foreigners to enter the country. Tourists can fill in a simplified online visa form, and the letter of invitation has been scrapped.
The new electronic visa could be a game-changer for Turkmenistan's tourism industry, one of the most sparsely populated nations on the continent.

Turkmenistan is bordered by Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and Iran. Once part of the Soviet Union, becoming independent after its dissolution in 1991, the country has a population of 6.5 million, making it the 35th most populated nation in Asia.
The city of Merv, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, is considered one of the great cities of the Islamic world – and once was an important stop on the Silk Road, a caravan route which was used for trade with China until the mid-15th Century.
But it's history stretches much further than that. In 1972, archaeologists discovered the fortress town of Gonur Depe, which date back to the Bronze Age. It was thought that it was abandoned after the nearby Margab River naturally changed course. The settlement continues to be excavated to do this day, as experts work to uncover its secrets.
The capital city, Ashgabat, also holds the oddly-specific Guinness World Record for the place with the 'highest density of white marble-clad buildings'.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, Chairman Of The People's Council of Turkmenistan, and president of Turkmenistan until 2022, lives in a white palace and travels around town in a white limousine. It's no surprise then that the capital is known as the 'City of White Marble'. It's mosque, Kipchak mosque, one of the largest in Central Asia, is also white.
Perhaps the most famous site in Turkmenistan thought is the Darvaza gas crater, often dubbed 'The Door to Hell', which has been burning continuously since 1968.
No one knows how the pit was first formed before it was set aflame by Soviet engineers. Perhaps there was simply no one around — or maybe its classified.
Some believe engineers were drilling for oil when a rig gave way and punched into a massive underground natural gas cavern, forming the huge crater, 70 metres wide and 30 metres deep.
One person who has experienced Turkmenistan for himself is a content creator named Chris, who is on a mission to visit every country in the world for his YouTube channel Authentic Traveling. Speaking about his visit to the crater, he said: 'It is amazing, it is so hot.
'You can feel these waves of massive heat coming. Sometimes the wind blows it away, it gets your face so incredibly hot. It's absolutely amazing to come here to see this really, really cool wonder.'
If you decide to head to Turkmenistan, you might want to take note of some rather unusual rules in place in the country.
If you head to Ashgabat, it won't take long to notice that all the cars on the streets are either white or silver – and it's completely deliberate.
The car rule has come to the country of Berdimuhamedow, who reportedly made the rule after ordering the impounding of all black cars in the capital in 2018.
Police were said to have subsequently seized black cars and told the owners they had to pay to have them repainted white or silver. The ban was later extended to vehicles of all other colours.
No official reason was given for the directive, although it's known that Mr Berdimuhamedow is a fan of the colour white (hence the aforementioned white palace and limo), believing it to be lucky.
Not only do cars have to conform to the colour rules, but they also have to be sparkling clean. In fact, visitors report that driving with a dirty car can land you in trouble with the police, who strictly enforce the rules.
But the bizarre rules in Turkmenistan don't end there.
For example, don't expect to be able to freely use the internet if you visit as you can in other parts of the world.
Access to the Internet is heavily regulated there and only a small fraction of the population can access it, with most websites banned other than local ones accessible via the Turkmenet, a censored version of the web available only in Turkmen.
And you won't be able to drop your friends back a home a message telling them about the visually breathtaking sights of the capital. More Trending
Most social media apps, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are blocked in Turkmenistan, along with WhatsApp, Telegram and YouTube. While many get round the ban by using VPNs, these are frequently shut down by the authorities.
Youtuber Chris said: 'Almost every single website is banned including major airline sites to book tickets out of the country! Imagine the anxiety I felt if I missed my flight.' He did add though that despite the banning of certain social media it was still used, with places advertising Instagram accounts.
'Officially Instagram is banned in the country but then at times they seem to look the other way…it never really made sense to me,' he said.

Jet2 blasted after Grans put on flight to wrong Spanish island
The pair were stunned when the pilot announced they'd be touching down in a different place. Two elderly woman have slammed holiday giant Jet2 after a shocking airport mix-up saw them put on the wrong plane — and only realised it mid-air when the captain said they were landing in the wrong place. Linda Trestrail, 69, and Wendy Russell, 71, thought they were flying off to sunny Majorca for a relaxing break. But after five separate ticket checks — including one onboard — the pair were stunned when the pilot announced they'd be touching down in Menorca instead. The pensioners, who both suffer from mobility issues and had booked special assistance, branded it a 'catalogue of disasters' and accused Jet2 of treating them worse than luggage, reports the Mirror. Linda fumed: 'You get compensation if your bags go missing — but they lost us, not the bl**dy baggage!' The pals, who both use wheelchairs, were given help through security at Bristol Airport, shown to the gate, and even directed into their seats by cabin crew before the horror realisation mid-flight. 'I burst into tears,' said Linda. 'I turned to Wendy and said, 'He said Menorca — not Majorca!' The flight attendant laughed when I told her. That's when the chaos started.' The blunder was so severe even the captain admitted he'd never seen anything like it in his career. But despite offering to personally fly them to Majorca, Linda claims Jet2 bosses overruled it 'due to security.' Wendy, who has undergone three brain surgeries and suffers from arthritis, said: 'It's terrifying how easy it was. They bang on about airport security, but two strangers got on a plane with five checks and no one noticed!' To make things worse, their luggage made it to Majorca without them — a major security breach that could've had dangerous consequences. 'Our bags flew without us. That's terrifying,' Wendy added. The women ended up stranded in Menorca for hours before being put on another flight. By the time they arrived at their resort, they'd been travelling for 17 hours instead of five. Linda said: 'Our legs were like balloons. We were supposed to be relaxing — we just collapsed in the room.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! A Jet2 rep at the hotel refused to meet them, and when they finally got a call from the airline two days later, they were offered a 'free excursion' — despite both being physically unable to walk. 'I thought it was a joke,' Linda said. 'We couldn't even get out of bed, let alone go sightseeing!' Despite being the talk of their resort — with fellow holidaymakers recognising them as 'the ladies who got on the wrong flight' — the pair said their break was 'ruined.' They've still not received compensation from Jet2, despite their travel agent and family contacting the company multiple times. So far, only Bristol Airport has issued an apology. Wendy added: 'This could've been so much worse. It was traumatic for us — but what if it had been someone with a serious health issue, or worse? This must never happen again.' Jet2 has since apologised, blaming the blunder on a 'human error' by a third-party special assistance provider. The airline claims to have 'retrained staff' and offered the women a gesture of goodwill. They said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to Mses. Trestrail and Russell for this incident. This is an extremely isolated incident and although there was no security risk, we have of course investigated it as a matter of urgency, including with the third-party special assistance provider. We can confirm that the customers went through security correctly, and their luggage was also screened correctly. "However, after these checks the customers were taken to the incorrect aircraft, which is the responsibility of the third-party special assistance provider at the airport. Upon boarding the aircraft, the incorrect destination on their boarding passes was unfortunately not identified and we apologise for this oversight which was down to human error. "We have carried out additional training with the team to ensure this does not happen again. As soon as we learned of the issue, our team booked Mses. Trestrail and Russell onto the soonest available flight from Menorca to Majorca and they also provided all the assistance they could both throughout their journey and the rest of their holiday. "We have been in touch with Mses. Trestrail and Russell to offer an appropriate gesture of goodwill and once again offer our sincere apologies. We understand they are due to travel with us once again this year, and we look forward to welcoming them onboard and delivering the usual VIP customer experience that we are recognised for." But for Linda and Wendy, the trust is broken. Linda said: 'We were terrified flying home. You're supposed to feel safe in their hands. They lost people, not just bags. That says it all.'

Family 'lucky to be alive' as bear climbs into car in US holiday horror
The nosey bear rummaged around their luggage and bags inside the car before being scared off. A family has told how they feel "lucky to be alive" after a bear climbed into their car while they were on holiday in the US. The Ferguson family, from Airdrie, had been staying in a rental cabin in Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains when the shocking incident unfolded on Monday. Grace Sloan, 18, was with her boyfriend Logan Ferguson, his parents and his aunt and uncle when the wild animal made its surprise appearance. The group were packing up their car following a two-week road-trip across the southern states of America when the black bear climbed into the boot. bear on Monday. Glasgow teen Grace told the Record: "I was still in my room packing up my things and I suddenly heard screams of ' Bear!' coming from outside. "Logan's mum was shouting and I could see his dad Paul and his uncle Johnny in the car and a bear was right next to them." In footage of the ordeal, Johnny is seen fleeing the 4x4 as the nosey bear hauls cases out the car before jumping in the open boot and climbing through the vehicle. But as Johnny made his escape, slamming shut the passenger door, the child lock activated, trapping Logan's dad Paul inside. Grace continued: "Paul had to climb over into the front seats to escape. "I've never seen sweat come off someone like that in my life. "We were all panicking not knowing what to do. 'If the bear had hurt anyone, I don't know what we would have done. "I'm still shocked. It could have killed one of us and Paul and Johnny are lucky to be alive in that way.' A video of the family's close encounter has since racked up over one million views on TikTok. In a bid to scare the bear away, the family can be seen triggering the car alarm. The animal eventually scarpered, leaving behind a torn hat and a hole in a suitcase. The family's trip took them through Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans, North Carolina, and Alabama. Black bears are native to the state of Tennessee and can weigh anywhere from 200-600lbs. Grace added: "We were lucky enough to see five bears on the whole trip, but the last one was by far the scariest. It was nerve wracking, but at least we all have a good story to tell."
