I revived my dog's puppy days using Google Gemini AI – Here's how it went
Now, when Google Gemini started to roll out the feature that allows you to convert photos into videos using, of course, Veo 3 AI, I immediately jumped at the opportunity and tried it out. To my surprise, it did a fairly accurate job. Here is how it went.
Firstly, I opened the Gemini app on my iPhone (it also works on Android phones), and because I have access to the Google AI Pro plan, I have access to Google Veo 3 preview, which is the AI tool Google uses to make videos.
Then, I submitted a photo of my pet dog, Coco, when he was a puppy, being held by my brother. And next, a prompt along with it that said, 'Make a video of my pug puppy from this photo and try to keep the details intact.' The AI-generated video Google Veo 3 made. (Converted to GIF)
Gemini took around a minute or so before generating an eight-second-long video of my little Coco moving around in my brother's arms. It looks quite realistic, and I am beyond happy that I got something. While it is definitely not real, it is indeed satisfying to see a moving picture of my dog from his puppy days.
Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel at large because this video isn't real. It's something that never actually happened. But maybe that's the point. It offers a glimpse of what could have been and perhaps, that in itself is comforting.
This is possible with the Veo 3 preview only. It gives you 8-second videos. Veo 3 only launched in May, and Google is now shipping the preview for users. This capability is only for Gemini AI Pro and Gemini Ultra subscribers, which means you will have to pay roughly ₹ 2,000 to access Google Gemini (there's a free trial available).
Google says people have been creating a wide range of content using Veo 3, including everything from ASMR videos to cutting through lava.
Having said that, I also tried it with photos of myself when I was a kid, but it did not allow me. Google is also bundling in safety measures, including adding a visible watermark to show they are AI-generated and an invisible SynthID digital watermark.
And, you can definitely use the Google Veo 3 preview to generate a wide range of content from making talking monkey vlogs set on the streets of Delhi to flying, talking giraffes climbing Mount Everest. The world is your oyster, though, of course, within the limits of Google's guardrails.

Cognition AI to buy Windsurf, doubling down on AI-driven coding
Artificial intelligence startup Cognition AI on Monday agreed to acquire Windsurf, an integrated development environment platform, strengthening its position in the rapidly evolving enterprise software market. The deal follows Google's $2.4 billion deal with Windsurf last week aimed at acquiring top talent and securing licensing rights to its technology. The deal with Google marks a win for Windsurf's backers, who have raised $243 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Greenoaks, and General Catalyst, and was last valued at $1.25 billion one year ago, according to PitchBook. The move reflects a broader trend among technology giants such as Alphabet and Meta, which are making bold, high-value acquisitions and offering lucrative compensation packages to secure leading industry talent amid intensifying competition in the AI sector. The deal with Cognition covers Windsurf's intellectual property, product line, brand, and business operations, as well as its highly regarded engineering, product, and go-to-market teams. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Windsurf brings with it $82 million in annual recurring revenue and a customer base of more than 350 enterprises. 'Among all the teams in the AI space, Cognition was literally the one we have respected the most, and they are a perfect fit to bring Windsurf to the next phase,' Jeff Wang, Windsurf's interim chief executive officer, said in an email to employees. In the immediate term, Windsurf will continue to operate independently, with Cognition pledging significant investment to integrate Windsurf's technology and unique assets into its own product suite, including its flagship autonomous agent, Devin. Earlier, Windsurf had been engaged in months-long discussions with OpenAI regarding a potential acquisition that could have valued the company at $3 billion, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in June.

Global smartphone shipments growth slows in Q2 as tariff uncertainty weighs
The growth of global smartphone shipments slowed in the second quarter as buyers, wary of U.S. tariff-driven economic uncertainty, curbed spending, especially on low-end devices, data from research firm International Data Corp showed on Monday. Shipments increased by 1% in the April-June quarter to 295.2 million units, according to the preliminary data, slower than the 1.5% growth recorded in the previous quarter. Demand in China declined in the second quarter, as subsidies failed to stimulate demand, with Apple seeing a 1% drop. Overall demand has tapered as consumers deprioritise spending on smartphones, especially in low-end segments. Sellers have continued to push higher price points to make up for the slowdown in unit shipments by offering AI in more affordable devices, IDC said. "In the face of ongoing political challenges, the impact of war, and the complexities posed by tariffs, the 1% growth in the smartphone market stands as a critical indicator that the market is poised to return to growth," said Anthony Scarsella, research director for Client Devices at IDC. "Economic uncertainty tends to compress demand at the lower end of the market, where price sensitivity is highest. As a result, low-end Android is witnessing a crunch weighing down overall market growth," said Nabila Popal, senior research director for Worldwide Client Devices. Samsung saw the highest growth, with shipments increasing 7.9% to 58 million units in the quarter. Apple roughly maintained its market share as the second-top smartphone seller, with a growth of 1.5% in shipments. IDC had in May slashed its 2025 global smartphone shipment growth forecast to 0.6% from 2.3%, citing tariff-driven economic uncertainty and a pullback in consumer spending.
