Odisha CM seeks amicable resolution of Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh
Majhi, in a high-level meeting held at the state secretariat Lok Seva Bhavan, emphasised the resolution of the ongoing Mahanadi water dispute with Chhattisgarh.
'The chief minister said that since the efforts being made to resolve the problem in the Central Water Commission are progressing slowly, it can be amicably resolved through negotiations between both states with the support of the central government," Majhi was quoted as saying in the statement issued by the CMO.
Stating that the Central Water Commission can provide technical support in the negotiations, Majhi said this will resolve the long-standing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh and enhance the relations between the two states.
On the sidelines of the All India State Water Resources Ministers' Conference held in Rajasthan in February and on the occasion of the World Water Day held in Bhubaneswar in March, the Mahanadi water dispute was discussed between Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bishnu Deo Sai and his Odisha counterpart Mohan Charan Majhi.
Both the chief ministers emphasised resolving the issue, it said.
Wednesday's meeting reported that discussions are underway between officials of the two states.
Apart from Majhi, the meeting was attended by Advocate General Patrambar Acharya, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary of Water Resources Department Anu Garg, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Saswata Mishra, and senior officers and engineers of the Water Resources Department.
The Mahanadi dispute was presently under the consideration of a tribunal. The Odisha government has alleged that Chhattisgarh has blocked the free flow of water in the Mahanadi River by constructing several barrages on the upstream. PTI AAM AAM ACD

Closely monitoring situation: India on Thailand-Cambodia clashes
New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) As military clashes between Thailand and Cambodia continued, India on Saturday said it is closely monitoring the unfolding situation and hoped for cessation of hostilities. At least 32 people have been killed and nearly 1,50,000 displaced in the border clashes between the two Southeast Asian countries that erupted on Thursday. In its reaction to the conflict, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised Indian travellers in the region to contact the respective embassies in the two countries for any assistance. 'We are closely monitoring the situation along the border between Cambodia and Thailand," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. 'India has close and friendly relations with both countries and hopes that both sides will take measures for a cessation of hostilities and prevention of further escalation," he said. The Indian embassies in Thailand and Cambodia have already issued separate advisories for Indian travellers. The Indian mission in the Thai capital urged all Indian travellers to check updates from authorities in the country before visiting tourist attractions in troubled areas. The Indian embassy in Phnom Penh also advised Indian citizens in Cambodia to avoid travelling to border areas. 'In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas," it said in a post on social media. India will not allow evergreening of patents: Goyal
New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday said India will not allow 'evergreening" of patents. He said that India has a robust intellectual property rights (IPR) chapter in both the free trade agreements with the UK and the four-nation block EFTA. 'We will not allow any ever greening", and despite that 'we still have a robust IPR chapter with two of the toughest countries of the world in IPR – Switzerland and the UK", he told reporters here. Section 3(d) of the Indian Patents Act, 1970, restricts patents for already-known drugs unless the new claims are superior in terms of efficacy, while Section 3(b) bars patents for products that are against public interest and do not demonstrate enhanced efficacy over existing products. Certain multinational firms have asked India to amend these laws, which were strongly opposed. Ever-greening of patent rights is a strategy allegedly adopted by the innovators having patent rights over products to renew them by bringing in some minor changes, such as adding new mixtures or formulations. It is done when their patent is about to expire. A patent on the new form would have given the innovator company a 20-year monopoly on the drug. Talking about collaboration in the critical minerals sector with the UK, he said India and the UK both have concerns and common interests in this area after the ban imposed by (China) on rare earth permanent magnets. 'The whole world has woken up to the reality that concentration of certain geographies in their supply chains can be harmful, and can suffer consequences in case of any unilateral action. Therefore, India and the UK are now looking to work together both for collaborating on the processing and refining of minerals and making finished products together," he said. PM Modi ‘deeply honoured' to attend Maldives' Independence day event: ‘Productive talks with President Muizzu will…'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday attended the 60th Independence Day celebrations of Maldives, along with members of his delegation. The event was organised at the Republic Square in Male, where President Mohamed Muizzu and several ministers of the country welcomed PM Modi as the Guest of Honour. After attending the event, PM Modi expressed on X that he was 'deeply honoured' to have witnessed the celebrations. 'The productive talks with President Muizzu will add significant energy to our bilateral relations,' the post read. In another post, he also said that the relationship between the two countries continues to grow and that it is shaped by people-to-people ties and cooperation in various sectors. 'India remains committed to supporting the aspirations of the Maldivian people and to working together for the betterment of our planet,' he added. During the 5-minute event, PM Modi was seen sitting next to Muizzu. The event featured a military parade and cultural performances by children and other artists. The top political and military brass of the Maldives were also present at the event. Members of PM Modi's delegation, including external affairs minister S Jaishankar and foreign secretary Vikram Misri, attended the event too, PTI reported. PM Modi's visit to the island nation marks a significant step towards improving the India-Maldives relations after a brief period of tension as Mohamed Muizzu, known for his 'pro-China' leanings, came to power while running an 'India Out' campaign. He adopted a policy aimed at strengthening relations with China and in a way reducing dependence on India, Mint reported earlier. However, in recent years, bilateral ties have been reset through what experts call a pragmatic approach. Muizzu visited India in October last year, and now PM Modi is on a two-day visit to Maldives. 'The Maldives will not do anything that would harm India's security interests. We value India's role as a close neighbour and friend,' President Muizzu said during the visit, marking a sharp departure from his earlier 'India-Out' campaign.
