Northeast has tremendous capabilities, launch pad for global South: Scindia
Scindia, who is Minister for Development of the North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and of Communications, has been actively driving initiatives to enhance connectivity, infrastructure and ecosystems across the northeast, positioning the region as India's next economic powerhouse, integrating all the eight states into a unified growth vision.
Earlier this week, the minister met top honchos of India Inc., including Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla as well as Tata Sons' Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai, ahead of the Rising Northeast Investment Summit 2025 scheduled to be held in New Delhi this month.
Discussions focused on region-specific growth sectors including agro-based industries, textiles, and tourism.
In a recent interview to PTI, Scindia noted that the northeast has historically been a very fundamental part of economies and trade for the whole of South-East Asia.
"It is important to keep in mind the history of the North East...It is through the North-East that goods and services used to travel all the way up to Europe. I believe that the North-East has...under Prime Minister's leadership, the concept of what used to be the last state has become today the first state," Scindia said.
Scindia noted that the northeast, endowed with rich natural and human resources, is experiencing growth rates exceeding the national average by over 300 basis points, with each of the eight states growing at around 11-12 per cent. He emphasised that this positions the region as a strong launch pad for the entire 'Global South'.
"I believe that today, as they grow, and their growth rates are in excess of 300 basis points of the national average... that each one of our eight states are growing at between 11-12 per cent. They present a tremendous opportunity for a launch pad for all of the global south. And that has been the Prime Minister's vision, which is what we are actualising on by the tremendous amount of investment into infrastructure, be it railways, highways, airports, waterways across-the-board...Ten per cent of Gross Budget Support (GBS), which is close to one lakh crore, going into the North-East every single year," Scindia said.
The northeast is undergoing a transformation, he said outlining the tremendous capabilities the region has.
"So I think the capability of the northeast today is paramount. And we need to be able to actualise and make sure that we give them that launch pad, if you will, to be able to contribute to the nation's progress," he said.

Siddaramaiah takes umbrage at ‘not being invited' for Sigandur bridge inauguration; Gadkari hits back
Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru later in the day that he wasn't invited for the inauguration. 'I called Nitin Gadkari and he told me he would postpone the event. After that I also wrote a letter. I think the BJP pressured him and they have gone ahead with the inauguration,' he said. The chief minister said he had a prior engagement in Vijayapura. Earlier Monday, Gadkari inaugurated the 2.44-km cable-stayed bridge connecting Kalasavalli and Ambaragodlu. Built at an estimated cost of Rs 473 crore, it is the country's second longest cable-stayed bridge. Bengaluru: Allegations flew thick and fast as Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah accused the Centre of disregarding protocol by not inviting him for the inauguration of Sigandur bridge in Shivamogga, even as Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari maintained that an invite was extended to the chief minister. In the letter he wrote to Gadkari on 11 July, Siddaramaiah said he was not consulted before finalising the state-level programme. Adding, 'As a sign of protest, none of us (from the government), including the PWD minister, district in charge minister or Sagar MLA will not attend the event.' I was not consulted before finalising the Shivamogga National Highway projects' dedication & foundation ceremony on July 14th, despite my name being included. Due to prior commitments in Vijayapura, I have written to Shri @nitin_gadkari requesting the event be rescheduled. — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) July 14, 2025 Gadkari shot back in a post on X, saying an official invite was extended to Siddaramaiah on 11 July. To mitigate any challenges with the chief minister's schedule, another letter was sent on 12 July, requesting his virtual presence, the Union minister said. Adding, 'The Central Government continues to uphold established protocols and has consistently appreciated the contributions and cooperation of the Government of Karnataka and the Chief Minister.' In a major step towards boosting regional connectivity, the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony for multiple key infrastructure projects is being held today in Shivamogga, Karnataka. An official invitation was duly extended to the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri… — Nitin Gadkari (@nitin_gadkari) July 14, 2025 The Congress government in Karnataka has time and again accused the Narendra Modi-led central government of 'step-motherly' treatment towards the state. Siddaramaiah has championed the cause to demand higher share in central taxes and the devolution pool, arguing for a more equitable distribution of taxes collected from the states. The Congress has even used this line of reasoning to justify higher borrowings, besides big-ticket allocations for the party's five poll guarantees which cost the exchequer Rs 52000 crore guarantee each year. 'Even when the state government has contributed 75 percent of the project cost, like in Railways where we give the land and bear 50 percent of the cost, we invite the centre,' Siddaramaiah asserted Monday. From the BJP, the counter also came from former CM B.S. Yediyurappa's elder son B.Y. Raghavendra who is also the BJP MP from Shivamogga. Raghavendra said he invited Siddaramaiah for the inauguration of Sigandur bridge on 9 July. — B Y Raghavendra (@BYRBJP) July 14, 2025 'It is acceptable to engage in mutual politics on various issues. However, making political remarks about the invitation letter reaching in advance, especially concerning a developmental matter, I consider it an insult to the people of the Sharavathi backwater region. I urge you to immediately retract your statement before the people of the state and make an effort to clarify the truth,' he wrote on X. Evading arrest till 1945, Shah said, Singh went back to Moirang after his release from jail in 1946, and engaged in social work. 'When I first went to Manipur, I saw youth conversing in Hindi. When I asked them how they could converse in Hindi so well, they recalled Heman Neelmani Singh, who worked for linguistic unity throughout his life,' he said. The Bharat Vikas Parishad is a voluntary organisation inspired by Swami Vivekanand that was initially set up as the Citizens Council by Suraj Prakash to mobilize citizen efforts against the Chinese attack of 1962. Gadkari opens Rs 472-cr Sigandur bridge, CM and ministers boycott event
Shivamogga/Bengaluru: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari Monday inaugurated Sigandur bridge — India's second-longest cable-stayed structure — in Shivamogga district amid a political row as chief minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues boycotted the event claiming they were invited at the last minute. The Rs 472-crore bridge, built over Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in Sagar taluk, is expected to significantly cut travel time for devotees heading to Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandur, besides reconnecting villages cut off since the construction of Linganamakki dam in the 1960s. Gadkari, in a post on X, said an official invite was sent to the CM on July 11, followed by a letter on July 12, inviting his virtual presence. The CM acknowledged receiving the invite on July 11 but said "such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation". You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru In a strongly worded letter to PM Narendra Modi, Siddaramaiah criticized the Centre for organizing a programme in Karnataka without consulting the state govt. He said protocol was violated by printing the name of a former CM before the names of deputy CM, speaker of the Assembly and Chairman of legislative council. Proceeding with the event despite the state's explicit objection, he said, amounted to sheer arbitrariness and defied the spirit of cooperative federalism. Hours before the event, Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru, "As a mark of protest, none of us — PWD minister, district minister, Sagar MLA or I – are attending the inauguration. I had personally called Gadkari and asked him to postpone the programme. He said he would. But now, bowing to pressure from local BJP members, they went ahead with the event. I had a prescheduled event at Indi (in Vijayapura). It was scheduled a month ago and I'll be there. " Accusing the Centre of "deliberately" trying to create a rift between Centre and state, Siddaramaiah said, "It is they (Centre) who should invite us. Who started the friction? Protocol must be followed. The event is being held in our state, and we are in a federal system." Attaching the twin letters to his X post, Gadkari said, "The central govt continues to uphold established protocols... committed to cooperative federalism." About the controversy, deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "The CM should have been informed well in advance. The state govt should have been taken into confidence. The CM has already said in a letter that his event in Indi taluk is also important. More than Rs 2,000 crore is being provided by the irrigation department." Asked if the oversight was deliberate, Shivakumar said, "Let's talk politics later." AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka and Congress MP, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said "insulting" the people of Karnataka and Kannadigas has become a habit of BJP. "This is not just an insult to the chief minister, but to seven crore people of Karnataka." Shivamogga MP Raghavendra said he had "respectfully invited the CM" on July 9 and added, "I urge you to immediately retract your statement... this bridge is the result of six decades of struggle." Gadkari, cabinet colleague Pralhad Joshi, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa and BY Raghavendra participated in the ceremony. ++ STANDALONE QUOTE Neither I nor my office was consulted before your ministry finalised the Shivamogga event and circulated invitations with my name. The official invite reached us only on July 11, just three days before the event. My office immediately informed you of my prior commitment in Vijayapura and requested rescheduling. Such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation. True cooperative federalism requires meaningful coordination. I remain committed to working with the Union government for Karnataka's people and hope future engagements reflect mutual respect __Siddaramaiah | CM
