Bengaluru Chinnaswamy Stadium declared ‘unsafe' after RCB stampede; Women's WC 2025, IPL 2026 matches in doubt
The one-man commission was set up by the Karnataka government earlier in the year after a stampede killed 11 fans and injured many others during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL-winning celebrations.
"The design and structure of the stadium was unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering," the commission stated in its report before the Karnataka cabinet, as quoted by news agency PTI.
Notably, Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to host the opening match and the final of the ICC Women's World Cup later in the year, but the latest observation and its acceptance by the Karnataka government could have wider implications on those matches.
The commission cited issues with Chinnaswamy Stadium's 'design and structure' that make it 'unsuitable and unsafe' for mass gatherings. It further noted that continuing to hold such events could pose 'unacceptable risks to public safety'.
"Given these systemic limitations, the commission strongly recommends that stadium authorities consider relocating events that are expected to attract large crowds to venues that are better suited for such large gatherings," the commission noted.
In order to avoid such tragic incidents in the future, the commission suggested remedial measures such as 'adequate entry-exit gates for mass entry and exit (ingress and egress), and emergency evacuation plans compliant with international safety norms.'
Meanwhile, the panel has also recommended legal action against KSCA chief Raghuram Bhat, ex-secretary A Shankar, and ex-treasurer ES Jairam—the two office-bearers had resigned after the stampede while taking 'moral responsibility' for the incident. It also recommends action against RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, DNA Entertainment Networks MD T Venkat Vardhan, and VP Sunil Mathur.

CSK batting is sorted now because Ruturaj Gaikwad will be coming back: MS Dhoni
Chennai, Aug 2 (PTI) Legendary MS Dhoni said on Saturday the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad will bolster Chennai Super Kings' batting in the next edition of the IPL, after the top-order batter pulled out mid-way through the previous season with an elbow injury. Dhoni took over the CSK captaincy from Gaikwad but the five-time champions finished 10th on the table with just four wins from 14 matches, struggling to cobble together consistent batting efforts. 'We are slightly worried about our batting order. But I think our batting order is quite sorted out now. Rutu (Gaikwad) will be coming back. He got injured. But he will be coming back. So, we are quite sorted now," said Dhoni during a private function here, indicating that the Super Kings will retain the services of Gaikwad. While he was delighted for the return of Gaikwad to the CSK fold, Dhoni said the team will try to further strengthen the unit through the mini-auction later this year. 'I won't say we (CSK) slacked off (in IPL 2025). But there were certain holes that we needed to plug in. A small auction is coming in December. Some loopholes are there, and we will try to plug those in," he added. Gaikwad's last competitive outing remains CSK's match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on April 8. However, he has been named in the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy, beginning later this month. Dhoni admitted that the Super Kings have been well below-par over the last two seasons, but said it was important for the team to identify those grey areas. 'Yes, the last couple of years have not been good for us. We have not been up to the mark. But what is important is for you to see the learnings. Yes, you had a bad season. But what went wrong? And that was the question for us last year also. 'We were like, okay, there are some shortcomings. But first we needed to exactly figure out what were the shortcomings and then look at solutions," he noted. Dhoni profusely thanked the loyal CSK fans for their wholehearted support during the strife time, and promised to give a better account of themselves in the coming season. 'I feel more often than not we have been able to figure out what exactly went wrong. In sports, you know you can have a very good time and at the same time there will be periods when you won't be performing well. In CSK, more often than not, we are on the higher side. 'So, we do talk about the processes. But at the same time we do want the result to come to our side. Last year it (result) wasn't there. But looking ahead, we will try to sort out most of the things and we will hopefully be at our best," he detailed. The 44-year-old then underlined the strong relationship he has fostered over the years with Chennai and the IPL team based in the city. 'It's a very long relationship that we have had and it started much before the start of IPL… 2005 was the time when I made my Test debut which happened to be in Chennai. So, it started from that point of time. And yes, CSK helped in a big way because all of a sudden I'm spending 45-50 days here." 'So, I feel the relationship over the years has grown. It helped me improve as a person. It helped me improve as a cricketer. So, CSK just happened. I think it's good for Chennai. So, today it's good for me also. Nowadays when we go and say CSK, it's not a brand only in India, but when we go to Australia, South Africa, or any of the cricket playing nations," he noted. In a shocking incident, a female school principal was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 3-and-half-year-old nursery student and sticking tape on her mouth as punishment after the child greeted her with ' Radhe Radhe ' in Chhattisgarh's Durg district, officials have said. The incident took place earlier this week on Wednesday at Mother Teresa English Medium School in Bagdumar village under Nandini police station limits when the victim greeted the principal, identified Ila Evan Colvin, with 'Radhe-Radhe", prompting an allegedly aggressive reaction, news agency PTI reported. The irked principal allegedly slapped the three-and-a-half-year-old girl, forcibly held her wrists, and stuck tape over her mouth. The victim child then narrated her ordeal to her parents after returning home in a distressed state. Her father, Praveen Yadav, immediately approached the Nandini Police Station to lodge a complaint, India Today reported. Colvin was arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act. 'The child studies in the nursery in the school. School principal Ila Evan Colvin was arrested under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 115(2) and 299 as well as section 75 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act for causing hurt, outraging religious feelings, cruelty to children, and other offences," a police official said as quoted by the news agency. Meet Sisters Preethy Mary, Vandana Francis: Kerala nuns who walked free from jail in conversion case
Two nuns from Kerala, arrested on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion, were on Saturday released from Durg Central Jail in Chhattisgarh after a special court granted them bail, reported PTI. The Catholic nuns were identified as Sister Preethy Mary and Sister Vandana Francis. They were received outside the jail by several leaders from Kerala, including LDF MPs and Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar. Earlier in the day, the special court of Principal District and Sessions Judge (NIA court) Sirajuddin Qureshi at Bilaspur granted bail to the two nuns along with co-accused Sukaman Mandavi on the condition that they surrender their passports and not leave the country. They were also asked to submit a bond of ₹ 50,000 each with two sureties and cooperate with the probe. Sister Preethi Mary is a nun from Kerala's Ernakulam district. She hailed from a family of seven siblings and is the oldest. She arrived in Chhattisgarh as part of her philanthropic leanings. On the other side, Sister Vandana belongs from Udayagiri village in Kerala's Kannur district. She used to work in a pharmacy in Chhattisgarh. Preethi and Vandana both belong to the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI) congregation, headquartered at Cherthala in Kerala's Alappuzha district, reported the Indian Express. Last week, the two Catholic nuns were taken into custody at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh. They reportedly arrived to pick up women coming to work at a local convent, but were arrested along with a third person based on a complaint by a Bajrang Dal functionary. In the complaint, the Bajrang Dal functionary alleged that they were forcibly converting and trafficking three girls from Narayanpur. However, the kin of two of the three tribal women involved firmly denied police allegations a day after their arrest. They said that the arrests were politically driven and devoid of merit. Their arrest stirred a political storm, and both Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan raised serious concerns over the incident. In fact, Vijayan urged a direct intervention of PM Modi, citing the families of the nuns were unable to contact them since the detention. Also, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also condemned the arrest.
