‘England will be very, very happy if Jasprit Bumrah plays only three Tests': Ian Bell
'I'd be amazed if he (Bumrah) only plays three Tests this summer,' Bell is quoted as saying by PTI. 'He's the best fast bowler in the world, and if he doesn't play, England will be very, very happy.'
India head coach Gautam Gambhir had said before the series that managing Bumrah's workload is important. However, there have been growing worries about how poorly India will fare without the 31-year-old in the squad considering the huge gap in quality between him and the rest of the pacers. Bumrah boasted an economy of 3.36 in 24.4 overs in the first England innings of the first Test, in which he also took five wickets.
Mohammed Siraj went at 4.51 in 27 overs while Prasidh Krishna had an aeconomy of 6.40m in 20. Shardul Thakur had bowled just six overs. It wasn't much better in the second, with Siraj doing a slightly better job of keeping up with Bumrah. 'Of course, you want to protect him (Bumrah), but if the series is on the line and he's fit, he has to play,' said Bell.
Bell, who scored 7727 runs for England in 118 Tests with 22 centuries and 46 half-centuries, also said that Kuldeep Yadav will cause a lot of problems for the host batters at Edgbaston if he plays in the second Test, particularly their lower order. 'It (wicket) won't turn early, but by day four or five, it could take spin,' Bell said.
He believes this makes a strong case for Kuldeep's inclusion. 'Kuldeep is bowling beautifully. Someone who can spin it both ways is always a threat – especially to England's lower order.' Bell added that India should consider the wrist-spinner as an 'attacking option to fight fire with fire.'

England vs India Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES, 2nd Test: Sundar in for Shardul, Reddy in place of Bumrah?
IND vs ENG Playing 11: England have announced the unchanged playing 11 for the second Test. India is likely to make two changes in their Playing 11 As Shubman Gill's Team India prepare to take on England in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, the spotlight is firmly on selection decisions, workload management, and potential history-makers. Trailing 0-1 in the five-match series after failing to defend 371 in Leeds—despite five centuries, including two by Rishabh Pant—India must now make bold, tactical choices to stay alive in the series. Bumrah available, but workload under scrutiny India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah bowled nearly 44 overs in Leeds, raising questions about his inclusion in the second Test. However, captain Shubman Gill confirmed in the pre-match press conference that Bumrah is available for selection. 'We are trying to manage his workload. We'll take a final call after assessing the conditions. We want a combination that can take 20 wickets and score enough runs,' Gill said. He also revealed that the team had anticipated Bumrah playing only three of the five Tests and had pre-planned multiple combinations accordingly. Two spinners in England? Not ruled out India are seriously considering a two-spinner strategy, with either Kuldeep Yadav or Washington Sundar partnering Ravindra Jadeja. Edgbaston's unpredictable weather and the presence of wear patches in the pitch have prompted the rethink. 'It's not common to play two spinners in England, but the surface might demand it. In Leeds, we felt we were creating chances when Jadeja bowled. If the pitch behaves similarly, a second spinner could help contain runs until the second new ball,' Gill noted. Kuldeep, who has never bowled to England's aggressive Bazball approach, could be India's wildcard. Despite going wicketless in his only Test in England (2018), he has a strong recent record—21 wickets in six Tests at home against England in 2024 at an average of 22.28. 9:38 AM 2nd Test | ENG vs IND Playing 11 LIVE UPDATES: Here's what Gill said on Bumrah's availability Speaking ahead of the match in the pre-match presser, Gill said about the team's 'Jassi Bhai', "Bumrah is definitely available to play. We are trying to find a way to manage his workload. And yes, we are trying to find the right combination where we can take 20 wickets and score runs as well on these kinds of wickets. We just thought we are going to have a final look today (on the wicket) once we come to the ground and see what kind of combination that we want to go with tomorrow." Gill also said that the team was aware of the fact that Bumrah would be playing only three games and had decided on several combinations. "So, you definitely do miss your best bowler if he is not playing. But I think we had that sorted before the series, who would be playing if he were not playing," he added.

Security scare ahead of Edgbaston Test, Team India told to stay indoor after...
Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir. New Delhi: A major warning against the security of the second Test of the five-match series between India and England in Edgbaston, Birmingham was raised. On Tuesday, Shubman Gill and his teammates, who are currently staying in central Birmingham, were told to remain inside, after a suspicious package was found in Centenary Square. According to a report published by PTI, the whole Indian team was asked to remain indoors owing to a warning issued on X by the Birmingham City Centre Police. The Indian players have been touring around places close to their team hotel since their arrival in the UK. A day or two before the second Test, which was to be played on Wednesday, July 2, a considerable number of the squad were seen prowling about the Broad Street. 'We've currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package,' Birmingham City Centre Police wrote in a X (formerly Twitter) post. 'We were alerted just before 3 PM, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it's assessed. Please avoid the area,' the post added. According to PTI, 8 players including skipper Shubman Gill went to the ground on Tuesday to train, whereas the rest of the 10 players of the squad were provided with a day off. Shubman Gill interacts with reporters India will be all poised to make a comeback in the Edgbaston Test, after losing by five wickets at the first Test at Leeds. Everyone will be looking to see whether Jasprit Bumrah would be playing in the XI of the visitors. On Tuesday, Shubman Gill spoke in the pre-match press conference. Adressing the media, he claimed that Bumrah can play the game but the decision will only be made by checking the pitch. 'We are going to have a final look at the pitch today and see what kind of combination that we want to go with,' said Gill. The history of India in Edgbaston is pathetic, and the visitors are still to win a Test match at the ground. India have lost 7 matches out of 8 played there with one being drawn.

"Where Are The Daddy Hundreds?" R Ashwin Turns Table, Takes Blunt Swipe At...
Ravichandran Ashwin has slammed the broadcasters over their harsh criticism of the Indian bowlers, following the defeat to England in the 1st Test last week in Leeds. India could only manage five wickets on Day 5 as England chased down a record score of 371. While Ashwin agreed that the bowling from India was not up to the mark, he was also against the notion of putting the entire blame on the bowlers. He slammed the commentators, saying that the narration completely shifted the bowlers once England achieved the target. "Once 370 was chased down (in the first Test), I thought the commentary became a diss about the Indian bowlers. I felt that the narrative built was pointing towards how Indian bowlers failed to win the match. But with a little homework, many would have realised that in England, scores have been consistently chased down in 4th innings," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. In fact, Ashwin went on to suggest that the batters should take more responsibility, urging them to convert 100s into more meaningful scores. For the unversed, India had four centurions in the first including, while Rishabh Pant hit one in both innings. "Batters should take up responsibility. I know batsmen are making runs. Yes, we had five centurions, but where are the daddy hundreds? We have to resign to the fact that there would be no contribution (with the bat) from the lower order. Our fast bowlers cannot bat, they cannot muster runs," he added. Ashwin, however, did question the bowlers, barring pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, for allowing England to score freely. He added that the others bowlers need to stick to tight lines as Bumrah will do the rest by creating pressure from the other end. "In Tests, I think maidens are quite underrated. Ideally, I would be okay with Bumrah going for a higher economy rate, but others should go low. I saw a show where someone said Siraj was unlucky to not be among wickets. I do agree he bowled well in the second innings, but the economy rate, you can't let go and hope that things fall in place. In Tests, you have to build your bowling gradually from Day 1, and the rewards will come in the final innings," Ashwin highlighted. "If you give away a lot of runs in the first innings, you tend to get conservative ato stem the flow, and you won't get wickets in this approach. If I was Morkel, I would tell the other bowlers not to do much since Bumrah is there. As the old saying goes, bowl three maidens, and you will get a wicket. Don't you think a wicket would fall after three maidens in a row against this England side? Against this side, if you are giving two runs an over, it is as good as bowling a maiden," he added.
