UHS awards certificates to summer elective participants
A total of 39 students from various institutions across Punjab were awarded certificates for completing 10-day intensive modules designed to provide hands-on experience and interdisciplinary learning beyond the confines of traditional curricula.
The program, now in its latest edition, featured electives across a diverse range of departments including Anatomy, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Human Genetics & Molecular Biology, Forensic Medicine, Allied Health Sciences, the Research & Development Centre, and the Professional Skills Development Centre.
Medi-Sum 2025 aimed to enhance students' clinical and professional competencies through laboratory-based learning, interactive workshops, expert mentorship, and exposure to research methodologies. The initiative, according to university spokesperson, was designed to nurture inquiry, critical thinking, and collaborative learning—skills deemed essential for emerging healthcare professionals.
Speaking at the ceremony, UHS vice-chancellor Prof Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore reaffirmed the university's focus on student-centered learning. 'Real learning extends beyond textbooks,' he said, adding: 'Through programs like Medi-Sum, we aim to instill the values of curiosity, innovation, and teamwork among future health leaders.' He urged the participants to be the ambassadors of the university and spread the word.
Pro-vice-chancellor Prof Dr Nadia Naseem, in her remarks, highlighted the reciprocal value of such initiatives. 'These programs are not just educational for students, they're also a learning experience for us as educators,' she noted, expressing the university's commitment to expanding such academic engagements in future editions.

Minister reviews preparations for heavy rains
LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Health and Chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Disaster Management, Khawaja Salman Rafique chaired a meeting here on Friday, to review preparations for the expected heavy rainfall. Additional Director General PDMA, Syed Jawad Haider briefed the meeting that heavy showers are likely to begin on Sunday night, with this year's monsoon rainfall is expected to be 25 percent above normal. The Provincial Minister directed authorities to ensure swift drainage of rainwater from low-lying areas and stressed that all available resources will be deployed to safeguard the public during the rainy spell. Moreover, the four-day haematology training course organised by the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore was concluded Friday with a certificate distribution ceremony. Addressing the ceremony, the vice- chancellor underscored the urgent need to restore clinical credibility through structured training and improved diagnostic practices. Prof. Dr. Ahsan Waheed Rathore emphasized the critical need to regain lost credibility in clinical and laboratory practice. 'Even correct interpretation of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) report is often overlooked by professionals. Skills that should be embedded in our professional programs are conspicuously absent,' he remarked and said, 'We have restructured our MPhil and PhD programs to be time-bound and competency-driven. Our focus now is to build faculties in various disciplines and ensure consistent academic activity that contributes to stronger professional communities." Head of UHS Haematology department, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Asif Naveed, shared plans to make such focused training a regular feature at UHS. UHS approves Rs2.71bn budget, revenue target set at Rs4.2bn
LAHORE: The Board of Governors of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore accorded approval of a Rs. 2.71 billion budget for the fiscal year 2025-26 during its 59th meeting held, here on Tuesday. The meeting was chaired by Justice Sheikh Ahmed Farooq (retd) and attended by Capt. Zahid Saeed (retd), Naeem Akhtar Sheikh, Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore, pro-vice chancellor Prof. Nadia Naseem, Registrar Kiran Fatima, Treasurer Mujahid Iqbal, and Additional Secretaries from the Punjab Specialized Healthcare & Medical Education Department and the Finance Department. Treasurer Mujahid Iqbal presented the annual budget, which sets the UHS's revenue target for the year at Rs. 4.2 billion. Key allocations include Rs. 77.57 million for research and scholarships, Rs. 358.77 million for development projects, and Rs. 917.3 million for staff salaries. In line with the Punjab government's policy, a 10 percent increase in employees' salaries was also approved. Operational expenses of the UHS have been earmarked at Rs. 367.1 million, while Rs. 400 million has been allocated for the conduct of examinations. Inter-collegiate sports and co-curricular activities will receive Rs. 25 million. A sum of Rs. 147 million has been allocated for the construction of a mosque and complex at the Jinnah Campus. Additionally, Rs. 72 million has been set aside for installing an elevator at the City Campus and transitioning both campuses to solar energy. For conferences and workshops, Rs. 48 million have been allocated. Speaking on the occasion, the vice- chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore said that UHS had organized more than 750 workshops over the past year for the capacity building of faculty members across Punjab's medical and health education institutions.
