Jasmine Paolini fires tennis coach after second-round Wimbledon exit
July 8 (UPI) -- Jasmine Paolini fired coach Marc Lopez after her second-round exit at Wimbledon 2025, the Italian tennis star announced on Instagram.
"We had some great results together, especially in Rome and Paris, and I will always remember those moments," Paolini wrote on the social media platform. "I appreciate all the hard work and energy Marc gave every day.
"Now that this part of the season is over, I've decided to make a change. I've learned a lot and made good progress, and now I'm taking the time to reflect on what the next step will be. Thank you again, Marc, for everything. I wish you all the best in the future."
Paolini, 29, started working with Lopez in April. In March, she announced a split with former coach Renzo Furlan, ending their 10-year union. The two-time Grand Slam finalist is still searching for her first major title. She currently sits at No. 5 in the WTA singles rankings, one spot below her career-high, which she first achieved in October.
Paolini, who lost to No. 16 Barbora Krejcikova in the Wimbledon 2024 women's singles final, beat No. 402 Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 in her Wimbledon 2025 opener.
No. 80 Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia beat the Italian 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 two days later to end her run at the grass-court major. No. 27 Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic beat Rakhimova in the third round, but went on to lose to No. 12 Amanda Anisimova of the United States in the fourth round. Anisimova will take on No. 50 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the quarterfinals Tuesday in London.
Paolini was knocked out of the Wimbledon 2025 doubles tournament on Friday at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club.
No. 4 Iga Swiatek of Poland beat Paolini in her first Grand Slam final appearance, which came at the 2024 French Open.

Photo by Adam Vaughan/EPA July 8 (UPI) -- Amanda Anisimova, who reached her first major semifinal at the 2019 French Open before taking a mental health break from tennis, is finally headed back to the same stage after winning a quarterfinal Tuesday at Wimbledon. The 23-year-old American, who was 17 during her Paris run, beat No. 50 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-1, 7-6(9) in the 99-minute quarterfinal at the All-England Lawn Tennis Club. "It's been an extraordinary year for me," Anisimova said on the ESPN broadcast. "So many highs. It's just been such a ride. I've been enjoying every step of the way. "Even times like today, when you're not sure you're going to cross the finish line. I just keep reminding myself to enjoy the moment. It's not often you get to play on this special court in front of so many special people." Anisimova edged Pavlyuchenkova 6-0 in aces and 26-9 in winners in the quarterfinal win. She also converted 4 of 10 break point chances and totaled 27 unforced errors, compared to 1 of 5 conversions and 28 unforced errors from the Russian. With her 2019 French Open run, which included wins over No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus and former world No. 1 Simona Halep of Romania, among others, the American became a Top 25 player. Anisimova's father died later that year, leading to her withdrawal from the U.S. Open. Anisimova reached the Wimbledon 2022 quarterfinals, but struggled at other majors and slid down the rankings. Injuries and a bout with COVID-19 further hindered her ability to succeed at majors. The American announced in May 2023 that she had struggled with her mental health since the summer of 2022 and needed an indefinite break from the sport. She returned to the court in January 2024, the start of last season, when she ranked outside the Top 400. Anismova slowly worked back up the rankings, starting with a fourth-round run at the 2024 Australian Open, which ended with a loss to Sabalenka. She followed that making her first career WTA 1000-level final at the Canadian Open, which resulted in a move inside the Top 50 of the WTA rankings. She lost in the second round of the 2024 French Open and first round of the 2024 U.S. Open. Anisimova started her 2025 campaign with a second-round exit at the Australian Open, but earned her first WTA 1000-level title in February at the Qatar Ladies Open. She then advanced to the fourth round of the French Open, resulting in a rise to a career-best No. 12 ranking. With her win Tuesday, Anisimova became the youngest American Wimbledon semifinalist since Serena Williams (22) in 2004. She will meet Sabalenka in a semifinal Thursday in London. Sabalenka survived an upset bid from No. 104 Laura Siegemund of Germany to win her quarterfinal 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Anisimova is 5-3 in career matches against Sabalenka. Sabalenka won three of their last four meetings, including their Round of 16 matchup at the 2024 Australian Open. Suns sign Isaiah Livers to 2-way deal, ex-Pistons forward missed 2024-25 season
The Phoenix Suns signed Isaiah Livers to a two-way deal, the team announced on Tuesday, July 8. Livers had a hip resurfacing procedure in October 2024 and missed the entire 2024-25 season. Livers revealed on Instagram after having the surgery, he played through the hip injury for two years. Advertisement "I am a big believer in dealing with the cards that are dealt in your hand, while taking control of this situation and making a change," Livers wrote in an Oct. 23, 2024, Instagram post. "Being able to start the rehab process, just yesterday, to get back to 100% is going to be a grind that I'm up for 24/7." Livers later posted videos on IG of him going through different workouts during the rehab process. He now looks to restart his NBA career with the Suns. The 6-6 forward spent three seasons with the Detroit Pistons, but was traded to the Washington Wizards on Jan. 14, 2024. Livers played his last game Jan. 12 against the Houston Rockets. He never played a game for the Wizards. Advertisement A second-round draft pick out of Michigan in the 2021 draft, Livers averaged 6.2 points in his three seasons with the Pistons. He averaged a career-high 6.7 points in his second NBA season. Phoenix has two players on two-way deals in CJ Huntley and Livers. The Suns had three two-way players last season in Collin Gillespie, TyTy Washington Jr. and Jalen Bridges. Gillespie recently signed a one-year deal with the Suns.
