Berhampur: Three hardcore Maoists, including two women, all from Chhattisgarh, carrying a total bounty of Rs 13 lakh, surrendered to police at Phulbani in Kandhamal district Monday.
The surrendered Maoists were identified as Made Beti alias Champa (30) of Dugumarka in Sukma district, working as divisional committee member (DCM), Raju Dodi alias Ajay (35) of Basaguda, and Admo Madvi alias Manju (27) of Pangud in Bijapur district, working as area committee members in Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of CPI (Maoist).
They surrendered at the district police office in Phulbani in the presence of inspector general of police (southern range) Niti Sekhar, SP (Kandhamal) Harish BC, and commandant 127 battalion of CRPF Pankaj Verma.
"The task of the surrendered Maoists was to reactivate the North-South corridor from Jharkhand to Chhattisgarh through south-central Odisha. They were working in the Maoist organisation since 2009, 2016, and 2011 respectively," said the SP (Kandhamal). The trio were involved in several Maoist-related violences in Kandhamal.
The surrender of senior Maoist leaders took place after the death of two Maoist leaders, Manku and Chandan, the ACM and party member in the Maoist organisation, in the June 30 encounter at Pushungia forest.

"Regular anti-Maoist operations in the interior areas of Kandhamal, the death of two ultras in the recent exchange of fire and frustration over unethical activities in the Maoist organisation, such as sexual harassment of female cadres, extortion through intimidation, and induction of youth into the organisation by false propaganda, are some of the reasons for the trio to quit the Maoists," said the SP.
They will be suitably rehabilitated under the surrender rehabilitation scheme of the govt, he said. Sekhar appealed to other ultras to shun violence and join the mainstream.

UP STF's big catch: Con with Rs 50,000 bounty held in Amritsar

1 2 L ucknow: The UP Special Task Force (STF) apprehended Harveer Singh, alias Kake Sardar, a notorious fraudster with a Rs 50,000 bounty on his head, in Amritsar, Punjab, on Tuesday. Harveer was wanted in connection with a cheating case registered at Paras Pur police station in Gonda under BNS Sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 504, 506, and 406. Harveer, originally from Basarke village in Tarn Taran district of Punjab, had been absconding after duping Gonda resident Sunil Kumar Dwivedi of Rs 50 lakh in 2021. Dwivedi's troubles began when he met Chandan Dixit, a co-accused from Chitrakoot, who introduced him to Harveer and Madan Gupta. They convinced Dwivedi to invest in a mining contract in Fatehpur, showcasing forged documents of a mining lease and promising a 10% partnership and substantial profits. Trusting them, Dwivedi handed over Rs 50 lakh, but the trio vanished without fulfilling their promises. The STF successfully apprehended Harveer near Parvati Hospital in Ranjit Avenue, Amritsar, based on intelligence inputs. The operation was led by STF inspector Jay Prakash Rai under the supervision of deputy SP Shailesh Pratap Singh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Calcula cuánto podrías ganar invirtiendo en Cervecería Nacional CFD Empieza a invertir hoy Leer más Undo The team, comprising SI Gulzar Singh and constables Rohit Singh, Pankaj Tiwari, and Ajay Yadav, played a crucial role in arresting Harveer. HC questions prolonged detention in NE riots case

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Tuesday wondered how long the prosecution can oppose bail for accused persons jailed in connection with the Feb 2020 riots that rocked northeast Delhi. During the hearing of one such case, the court asked Delhi Police how long the accused people could be kept in jail, after highlighting the passage of five years and the fact that arguments on charge were still not concluded in the terror case related to the 2020 riots. A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar posed the question to Delhi Police during the hearing of the bail application of Tasleem Ahmed, accused in a case related to an alleged larger conspiracy in the riots, lodged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Ahmed, the owner of a coaching centre, is accused of being part of the larger conspiracy case in relation to the riots. The court made the query after the accused's advocate, Mehmood Pracha, raised the issue of delay in the proceedings in the case. Pracha said he won't be making submissions on the case's merit but would seek relief on the ground of parity in relation to the delay in trial. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One plan. "He (Ahmed) was arrested on June 24, 2020… I have already spent five years (in jail)," Pracha argued, seeking urgent relief. He claimed his client never caused a delay in the case proceedings. Special public prosecutor Amit Prasad opposed the submission, arguing that the prosecution cannot be blamed for the delay in trial as there were several occasions when the matter was adjourned at the accused persons' request. Pracha went ahead to confine his argument to the delay in trial. The court will continue to hear arguments on July 9. The violence in northeast Delhi in Feb 2020 left at least 53 people dead and around 700 injured.
