Commemorating ‘Double Six' tragedy in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS), in collaboration with the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre, held a memorial ceremony, on Friday to commemorate the 'Double Six' tragedy at Taman Chong Tain Vun, Jalan Trig Hill. The event drew leaders and community representatives, including Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee, MPS President Walter Kenson, several State Assemblymen, agency officials, NGOs and family members of the late Datuk Chong Tain Vun.
Advertisement Wreaths were laid, followed by a moment of silence to honour the lives lost in the air crash. Walter said the memorial was a joint initiative between MPS and Vivian Wong to remember one of Sabah's darkest days and in particular, to recognise the contributions of a prominent figure from this district who died in the crash. 'He was a respected lawyer and public servant. This ceremony is a step toward ensuring the tragedy and the people we lost, are never forgotten,' he said. He also expressed gratitude to all who attended, regardless of political affiliation, and noted the strong support from local organisations despite the short notice.
Advertisement 'This marks the start of what we hope will become an annual remembrance at the district level,' Walter said. Vivian hoped the council would continue the initiative, saying it was important for younger generations to learn about the tragedy and its significance in the state's history. Tanjong Papat Assemblyman Datuk Frankie Poon said the memorial served not just to recall a national loss, but to honour the sacrifices of leaders who dedicated themselves to Sabah's development. Jetama Chairman Liau Fui Fui agreed, adding that the legacy and leadership of those who perished must continue to be honoured. The tragedy occurred on June 6, 1976, when a plane carrying several Sabah leaders crashed in Kg Sembulan after departing from Labuan to Kota Kinabalu. Among the victims were Chief Minister Tun Fuad Stephens, Datuk Salleh Sulong, Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Chong Thien Vun and Assistant Minister Darius Binion. 26 homes destroyed in Tawau fire

TAWAU: 26 homes in Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4 Jalan Apas, were destroyed in a fire that reportedly occurred around 9.30am on Friday. A motorcycle was also reported to have been destroyed, but the swift action of the fire department successfully prevented the fire from spreading to another 1,300 homes. No fatalities were reported, as all residents managed to escape before the fire spread and destroyed their homes. The incident occurred less than a week after a similar fire at Kampung Cempaka, which is also located in the Batu 4 Jalan Apas area near Kampung Kurnia Jaya. The fire on July 26 resulted in the destruction of five homes, damage to three others, and the demolition of two houses to prevent the fire from spreading. In the recent incident at Kampung Kurnia Jaya, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sabah received an emergency call via MERS999 at 9.37am. The fire brigade team from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the scene and arrived at 9.48am to control and extinguish the fire. The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer I Jehrey Ibno and involved 39 firefighters from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), assisted by seven members of the Kampung Titingan Community Fire Team. Efforts to extinguish the fire were challenged by its rapid spread, as all the affected houses were constructed primarily from wooden materials. The fire department implemented both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies in an effort to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. A 300-foot single stream method was employed using one nozzle from a portable pump utilizing seawater as the source, along with two 200-foot dual streams supplied by water from the fire engine. Their efforts were successful as the fire was fully contained by 10.14am and the operation concluded approximately one hour and 30 minutes later, after all potential hazards were addressed. Nusantara Sufi scholars in Sabah from August 21-24

Kota Kinabalu: Prominent figures and Sufi scholars from several Nusantara countries will be in Sabah for the Sufi Se-Nusantara 3.0 Program from Aug 21 to 24. State Mufti, Datuk Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar, said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman would officiate the event at the City Mosque on Aug 22. 'On Aug 21, the event will take place in Kundasang so that our Sufi scholars can experience the cool climate of Kundasang. So far, participants from Cambodia, Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia have confirmed. 'I understand there will also be participants from Australia.' Bungsu said it is organized by the state government, Sabah Mufti Office in collaboration with Rabithah Masyayikh Sufiyah Nusantara and several other cooperative bodies, targets a participation of up to 4,000 people. Kota Kinabalu Community Hall to be restored, not demolished
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: Larry Ralon Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: The fire-damaged Kota Kinabalu Community Hall (DBKK) will be restored in its original form rather than demolished, due to its historical value, said Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah. Over 50pc of the building was damaged in the 29 July blaze, believed to be caused by an electrical short circuit. The roof collapsed and flammable wooden interior fittings were mostly destroyed, but the concrete structure remains intact, making restoration possible. Dr Sabin, who visited the site with officials from DBKK, the Fire Department, police, and insurers, said proposals including preserving the hall's structure and upgrading its surroundings will be submitted to the State Cabinet after the full investigation report. The hall, a city landmark for over 60 years, had no occupants during the fire, and no injuries were reported.
