Himachal Pradesh Rain Fury: 34 Missing, Search Operation Continues In Mandi
Rescuers resumed the search operation in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district on the third day on Thursday to locate 34 people who went missing after cloudbursts and heavy rain triggered massive landslides and flash floods.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted a moderate flash flood risk in Kangra, Mandi, Hamirpur, Shimla, Sirmaur and Solan districts till Friday.
Amid heavy rain and broken roads, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team on Wednesday set an example of courage and dedication by carrying a pregnant woman in a palanquin for miles to reach a hospital in the Thunag area in Mandi district.
Torrential rain on Tuesday caused severe flooding, washing away 14 bridges, 148 houses and two shops, resulting in 11 deaths, largely in Mandi district. The death count could rise as the survival of the missing people after more than 48 hours of disaster is getting dim.
A total of 157 people have been housed in five relief camps, the HP State Emergency Operation Centre said.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu on Wednesday visited Syathi village, which is located in the Laungani panchayat in Dharampur in Mandi, where he met families affected by a cloudburst, listened to their woes, shared grief and also reviewed relief and rehabilitation operations.
The district administration has provided assistance of Rs 1.70 lakh as financial aid, ration, tarpaulins and other relief material to each household.
Speaking to the affected families, the Chief Minister said the government stands firmly with all the affected and assured them of all possible assistance.
Recalling the frightening incident, villagers narrated their sorrows and said that the entire village was swept away all of a sudden, and they now do not have a place left to pitch even the tents for shelter.
'Many of us narrowly escaped death and were eyewitnesses to the horrifying incident,' a local resident told the Chief Minister.

163 landslide-prone areas in Chikkamagaluru district
Chikkamagaluru: The district administration has identified 163 landslide-prone areas. These areas were determined based on landslides and damage caused by heavy rains since 2019 and are being closely monitored. The district administration also identified 75 care centres to relocate families at risk if rains intensified. Preparations were in place to relocate people if signs of increased moisture and soil loosening were observed. Out of the 163 vulnerable areas, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) separately listed 25 locations where human settlements and roads were at risk. In Gudethota village of Koppa taluk, 17 families lived in danger during the rainy season every year. The road near Kavikal Gandi on the Bababudangiri road was rebuilt. The work, costing Rs 90 lakh, was completed. Apart from this, landslide prevention work has not started elsewhere. For two landslide prevention projects on Mullayanagiri road, approval was granted for work costing Rs 85 lakh. In Charmadi Ghat, the GSI identified three risk areas, and the district commissioner wrote to national highway division officials to address these. The district administration informed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to take immediate action where landslides were possible at two locations on National Highway-163 in Sringeri taluk. Fifty-seven nodal officers were appointed to monitor landslide-prone areas, with one officer assigned to each gram panchayat jurisdiction. Rain fury: Over 30 villages in Banaskantha put on alert, 350 people relocated
While two deaths were reported in Jamnagar district more than 30 villages in Dhanera and Tharad talukas along the Rail river in Banaskantha have been put on alert as the district received heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, 19 panchayat roads were closed in the district. Two male labourers from Madhya Pradesh died after lightning strike on Thursday in Sevak Dhuniya village in Lalpur taluka of Jamnagar district, Jamnagar collector K B Thakkar told The Indian Express adding that two others were taken to the district hospital for treatment after sustaining burns. Banaskantha Collector Mihir Patel told The Indian Express that 350 people were relocated from villages of Palanpur taluka in Banaskantha district on Thursday. In the last 24 hours ending at 5 pm on Thursday, Vadgam, Palanpur and Dantiwada talukas received 8.6 inch, 6.1 inch and 6 inch of rainfall, respectively. As per the IMD, the state continues to be on alert owing to the 'monsoon trough that continues to pass through Bikaner, Sheopur, Khajuraho, Daltonganj, Digha and thence east southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over central parts of west Rajasthan, trough from northeast Arabian sea to northwest Bay of Bengal across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, the cyclonic circulation over north Odisha adjoining Gangetic west Bengal between tilting south-westwards'.

Light rain likely overnext seven days
New Delhi: The city experienced a sultry day on Thursday. Although significant rain activity eluded the city during the daytime, high humidity made the outdoors uncomfortable. There are chances of very light to light rain over the next seven days, but India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for light to moderate showers for Saturday. The maximum temperature was 36.9 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. However, the heat index or feel-like temperature was 48.9 degrees Celsius at 3.30pm and 48.2 at 5.30pm. The relative humidity oscillated between 59% and 89%. Between 8.30am and 5.30pm, only trace rainfall was seen at Lodhi Road and Palam. "As the monsoon trough is expected to come closer to Delhi from July 5, the rain activity is expected to intensify," said an official. In July so far, the city logged 4.1mm of rainfall against the entire month's normal of 209.7mm.
