But, things take a turn when it gets chosen for a dangerous assignment. The security unit privately refers to itself as Murderbot, a fact that becomes more than awkward once the humans learn about the name.
Apple first announced the sci-fi adaptation, from About a Boy creators Chris and Paul Weitz, in late 2023. The first two of ten Murderbot episodes will come to Apple TV+ on May 16. The next eight episodes will debut every Friday.

The survival drama is set during the 2018 Camp Fire, which is noted as being the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. It stars Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey alongside 'Barbie' alumna America Ferrera, who's an Academy Award nominee. Between the two stars and the pedigree of the director behind the camera, 'The Lost Bus' is a pretty easy sell, and it's already one of my most anticipated streaming movies of the fall season. However, if you need more convincing, Apple just dropped the first official trailer. This preview introduces McConaughey's character and sets the stakes as he's tasked with driving a bus full of schoolchildren through a blazing inferno while also attempting to reunite with his own son. Meanwhile, America Ferrea plays the children's teacher who is also desperate to ensure the children in her care escape the fire unharmed. In short, the trailer looks extremely intense. The closing shot, which shows the bright yellow school bus speeding down a fire-licked road, the forest on either side ablaze, is particularly striking. The two-minute trailer also hints at the movie's emotional pull as McConaughey's character reflects on being an absentee father and his desire to make amends for his previous parental failures. Alongside the trailer, Apple has released an official synopsis for the upcoming movie: 'From director Paul Greengrass and inspired by real events, 'The Lost Bus' is a white-knuckle ride through one of America's deadliest wildfires as a wayward school bus driver (Matthew McConaughey) and a dedicated school teacher (America Ferrera) battle to save 22 children from the terrifying inferno." It certainly sounds like a setup ripe for adrenaline-raising brushes with towering flames, and with Greengrass in the director's seat, viewers can expect a movie that gets increasingly intense across its runtime. The fact that it's set during a real-world natural disaster will only make its dramatic moments all the more powerful as real people faced this wildfire. Alongside McConaughey and Ferrea, 'The Lost Bus' also features Yul Vazquez, Ashlie Atkinson, Spencer Watson and Danny McCarthy. It's based on the novel "Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire" by Lizzie Johnson, and written by Brad Ingelsby and Paul Greengrass. 'The Lost Bus' is set to start streaming on Apple TV Plus on October 3. ‘The Lost Bus': Matthew McConaughey Saves Kids From Deadly Fire in New Film
After a six-year break from acting in live-action movies, Matthew McConaughey is making his return in a new thriller based on a true story. Apple TV+ just dropped the first trailer for The Lost Bus, a new drama that unpacks everything that went wrong with California's 2018 Camp Fire, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state's history. The fire ignited in Butte County and quickly made its way to Paradise, California, resulting in 85 casualties and over 150,000 acres of land torched. In the film, McConaughey plays Kevin McKay, a tired bus driver and father of a teenage boy, who answers a distress call of 23 children and their teacher, Mary (America Ferrera), all stranded at a local elementary school when the Camp Fire's deadly flames reach their school. 'It's too late. It's too late. I'm too late as a father,' Kevin whispers to Mary in the trailer, as the inferno rages around them. The trailer is eerily quiet. Instead of music, the only thing we can hear is the roar of the fire's flames and the crackling sounds as it consumes everything in its path. Directed by Paul Greengrass, known for his work on United 93 and The Bourne Ultimatum, the film also stars Yul Vazquez, Ashlie Atkinson, Danny McCarthy, Spencer Watson, and Peter Diseth. The Lost Bus is one of live-action two projects McConaughey will release in 2025. The other, The Rivals of Amziah King, had its festival premiere at SXSW in the spring. 'I remembered a couple of things: One, how much I truly enjoy performing. Two, I remembered, 'hey, McConaughey, you're pretty damn good at this,'' the actor told Variety about his time away. 'And three, I remembered that acting is a vacation for me, and what I mean by vacation is that when I'm performing, it's my singular focus. When I walk out the door in the morning, my wife says, 'Go kick some a--. I got the kiddos. We're good.' That's vacation. Because I'm not multitasking. I'm not compartmentalizing. I'm fully focused on finding the truth of my character.' In a previous statement, Greengrass said, 'The Lost Bus is the story of quiet heroism—of people coming together in the face of the unthinkable. I'm honored to have been entrusted with this story.' The Lost Bus is set to hit theaters on Sep. 19, before becoming available for streaming on Apple TV+ on Oct. 9.
