Davey Todd thrilled to ‘turn the tables' and mark himself as the man to beat at Southern 100

Davey Todd thrilled to ‘turn the tables' and mark himself as the man to beat at Southern 100

Todd won the first Superbike and Supersport races and narrowly missed out a hat-trick after he was forced to settle for the runner-up spot in the Supertwin race.
The Yorkshireman set three lap records as racing commenced in perfect conditions around the 4.25-mile Billown course and Todd will now be focused on retaining the Solo Championship title in the feature Superbike race.
Riding the 8TEN Racing BMW, Todd was a runaway winner in the Ellan Vannin Fuels Senior race, pulling away from Honda's Dean Harrison and establishing a new lap record for the race at 116.409mph.
He won by 4.5s after seven laps, with Harrison 1.2s up on Manx racer Nathan Harrison (H&H Motorcycles Honda) in third.
Michael Dunlop finished fourth on his MD Racing BMW, 6.8s behind Nathan Harrison, with Mike Browne fifth on his Honda.
Todd was beaten twice by Dean Harrison in the Superstock races at the TT last month and was delighted to turn the tables on his rival.
'I love that bike, the 8TEN Racing BMW, the bike is fantastic and I've loved it all year,' he said.
'I finished second in the Superstock races at the TT to Dean, so it's nice to turn the tables in that one.
'I've been good off the start in general and it took me a couple of laps to get into it after the Supertwin race.'
Runner-up Harrison is riding a different 1000cc Honda from the bike he rode to victory at the TT and said he had no answer for Todd.
'It's a little bit different to the bike I rode at the TT and I've stuck a couple of Honda Racing fairings on it,' said the Bradford man.
'The bike's wheelieing everywhere so we'll make a few tweaks for tomorrow and have another go.'
Rob Hodson finished sixth on the SMT Racing Honda ahead of Paul Jordan (Jackson Racing Honda).
In a scintillating H&H Motorcycles Supersport race, Todd and Browne were locked together throughout the seven-lap encounter.
Dunlop, who started from pole on the Milwaukee Ducati, had been trying to close the gap in third when he retired from the race with two laps remaining.
The leading duo broke away from the chasing pack and traded blows for the lead, but Todd broke the lap record on the Milenco by Padgett's Honda on the final lap with a speed of 111.544mph to take the win by 1.256s from Browne (BPE by Russell Racing Yamaha).
Michael Sweeney finished an excellent third on his Yamaha after prevailing in a breathless battle for the last rostrum place, crossing the line ahead of Nathan Harrison, Jordan and Hodson.
'I'm just stoked with that and I really enjoyed the battle,' said Todd.
'It's always nice when you can win a race with a battle like that.'
Hodson (SMT Racing Paton) capitalised when Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Paton) ran slightly wide on the final lap to win the opening Supertwin race, with Manx rider Joe Yeardsley 14 seconds adrift in third.
Todd set a lap record for the race at 106.095mph.
The Supersport B race was rerun at the end of the evening following a red flag crash involving six riders on the first lap. No injuries were reported.
Veteran Ulsterman Paul Cranston won the race from fellow Northern Ireland man Dennis Booth by only 0.330s. It was Cranston's first win at the Southern 100 in 43 years.
The opening Sidecar race was won by Manx brothers Callum and Ryan Crowe.

Tesla Signs $4.3B LG Battery Deal to Boost U.S. Supply, Cut China Reliance

The Mitsubishi Destinator is a bigger three-row SUV that will sell almost everywhere but here in the States. That's unfortunate because it could be a hit. View post: Amazon Is Selling a 'Handy' $43-Piece Magnetic Screwdriver Set for 46% Off, and It Has 'All the Sizes You Need' The hybrid sports coupe is nearly here, and Honda is revealing more information for us to dig into. View post: Everything We Know About The 2026 Honda Prelude Before Its September Debut Tesla has signed a massive $4.3 billion deal with LG Energy Solution to supply lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) batteries produced in the United States. The agreement will span from August 2027 through July 2030, with the potential to extend to 2037. Unlike previous partnerships, this one focuses exclusively on energy storage systems like Powerwall and Megapack, not the company's vehicle lineup—at least for now. The move is a major step in reducing Tesla's dependence on China for critical battery materials. In fact, the company's energy division has faced ongoing pressure from high import costs, which Tesla's CFO recently admitted had an 'outsized' impact on profitability. It's yet another sign of Tesla pivoting toward more domestic production after a string of difficult quarters. That pressure has been mounting for a while. Tesla's profits have nosedived recently, and a cheaper Model Y—stripped of its luxuries and built to a budget—is reportedly in the works to help claw back margins. Previous Pause Next Unmute 0:00 / 0:10 Full screen Honda may move the next-generation Civic production from Mexico to the U.S. Watch More Energy Storage First, Cars Next? For now, the batteries secured from LG's Michigan plant will be reserved for home and grid storage products. However, it's easy to imagine that future vehicle applications are on the table—particularly as Tesla tries to broaden its market reach. A recently leaked video from China hinted at a radically de-contented affordable Model Y, and reports suggest the vehicle will be visually and mechanically distinct from current versions. This shift would likely demand a new supply of cost-effective battery packs—an area where LFP chemistry shines. This comes as Tesla engineers have also floated the idea of a smaller Cybertruck, aimed at reducing cost and appealing to markets that find the full-size truck impractical. Tesla Cybertruck – Production Line — Source: Tesla Trouble On The Truck Front The Cybertruck itself, once a symbol of Tesla's bold ambition, is now becoming a poster child for overpromise. Quality concerns have plagued early deliveries, with owners reporting everything from panel gaps to drivetrain problems. One customer has even requested a buyback after service visits failed to fix a persistent issue. It's not an isolated case. Persistent quality problems have seen early adopters lose patience—and that's without the truck hitting mainstream volumes yet. While the Cybertruck struggles, Tesla's energy division is increasingly seen as a stabilizing force. This LG deal solidifies Tesla's commitment to that space, offering a domestic, tariff-proof supply chain for one of its fastest-growing business units. Source: Getty Images The Bigger Picture This isn't Tesla's first major attempt to de-risk its supply chain. The EV maker recently partnered with Samsung on a $16.5 billion chip deal to secure domestic production of next-generation AI hardware. Combined with this new LG agreement, Tesla is drawing a clear line between its future ambitions and the volatile Chinese sourcing that's dominated its past. It's a smart move given the political climate—and a necessary one as competition from global EV startups continues to rise. For instance, Xiaomi's new electric SUV drew nearly 10,000 preorders within 24 hours, a sobering reminder that Tesla's dominance is no longer guaranteed. Limited-Edition 8 Series Highlights BMW's Packed Monterey Car Week

By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. The hybrid sports coupe is nearly here, and Honda is revealing more information for us to dig into. View post: Everything We Know About The 2026 Honda Prelude Before Its September Debut The North American premiere of the M2 CS is also happening BMW is gearing up for a busy Monterey Car Week, which takes place next month. Not only will the North American premiere of the new M2 CS take place, but the company has also confirmed the release of a special-edition 8 Series, which we first heard about a couple of weeks ago. The company is also celebrating two 50th anniversaries. One is for BMW Art Cars, and another is for the iconic 3 Series. This is an important period for the brand, as it gets ready for a completely new era with the imminent arrival of the Neue Klasse models. But first, here's what's in store at Monterey. Special-Edition 8 Series Could Mark Beginning Of The End For Model Line Source: BMW The second-generation 8 Series was introduced back in 2018, so it's been on sale for some time. Over the years, BMW expanded the lineup with six-cylinder models, the fire-breathing M8 and M8 Competition, and the beautiful convertible and Gran Coupe models. Still, this is a long time for a single generation of any model to be on sale, which is why the upcoming limited-edition 8 Series could represent a swansong for the range. BMW has only said that details of this special 8 series will be made public on August 14, but rumors suggest the variant will be based on the V8-powered M850i. This model has a 523-horsepower V8, and we expect that the limited-edition model will come with unique styling flourishes and even more opulent interior trim. A limited production run will make it especially desirable. A 'private location' has been chosen for a first reveal of the limited 8 Series. North American Premiere Of M2 CS Source: BMW We were lucky enough to see the dramatic new M2 CS up close at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, so we can confidently say that attendees at Monterey will not be disappointed to see the sporty coupe in the metal, especially if BMW showcases one finished in the Velvet Blue paint we saw. Its 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder engine has been dialed up to make 523 horsepower, and the styling enhancements include that hard-to-miss ducktail spoiler. At almost 100 pounds lighter than the normal M2, the CS achieved a new record for compact cars at the Nürburgring, where it lapped the 12.9-mile track in just seven minutes and 25.5 seconds. We expect this car to further boost record BMW M sales. 3 Series And Art Cars Celebrate 50th Anniversaries The 3 Series was once the bread and butter of BMW's lineup, but the X3 and X5 have long since surpassed it. Still, the sedan is far from irrelevant, and it has stuck around long enough to see its 50th anniversary. In celebration of this and the role of the 3 Series in motorsport, BMW will be showing iconic race cars at the event, including on the track for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Between August 13 and 16, these BMWs will light up the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The models to be seen include a 2004 BMW Team PTG M3 GTR from the E46 generation, and a 2011 BMW M3 GT ALMS from the E92 gen. The M3 GTR E46 is one of several that achieved great success in the 2004 Rolex Sports Car Series, when the car notched up 10 wins in 12 races. Away from the track, a 1977 BMW 320i Turbo IMSA Group 5 model will be on display. This car rose to prominence after the original 3.0 CSL was retired. The turbocharged 320i made upwards of 650 horsepower, and only five were made for the IMSA series. Source: BMW Finally, BMW will mark 50 years of art cars at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Back in 1975, the first BMW Art Car was commissioned by French race car driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain. That project was for a 3.0 CSL race car he would drive at Le Mans, and so began a proud lineage of BMW art cars, with another 19 artists creating their own since then. On display at this year's event will be Art Car #4 (a BMW M1 Group 4 by Andy Warhol), and Art Car #20 (a BMW M Hybrid V8 by Julie Mehretu), which will wrap up an exciting week for BMW fans. The action doesn't end there for BMW. In September, the company's first Neue Klasse vehicle will debut at the IAA Mobility. That will be the new iX3, and it begins over 40 new or revised BMW launches by 2027. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile

TikTok's Parent Company Is Bringing Its Tech to Chinese EVs

By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. The hybrid sports coupe is nearly here, and Honda is revealing more information for us to dig into. View post: Everything We Know About The 2026 Honda Prelude Before Its September Debut There is no doubt that TikTok is the screen time king If one thing can be truly described as a guilty pleasure in today's digital landscape, it would be TikTok. The infamous short-form video platform has become the dominant social media application, capturing the attention of millions around the world. As much as we may wish to resist the digital siren call, the app's algorithm draws users in with an endless stream of ultra-personalized content that can have us hooked for hours. Its effectiveness has spawned a wave of TikTok imitators from American tech companies such as Google's YouTube Shorts or Meta's Instagram Reels. However, TikTok is more than just a social media video app for influencers. Its parent company, ByteDance, is a technological powerhouse that also specializes in cloud and AI services. According to reports out of China, it could be launching a new initiative to get its cutting-edge tech into the next generation of tech-infused cars. MG IM5 — Source: MG Motor TikTok's parent company may bring its tech to future cars According to recent reports from CarNewsChina and IT-Home, the parent company of TikTok is engaged with Chinese automaker SAIC on a new venture called Doubao Auto. SAIC is one of the 'Big Four' state-owned Chinese automakers, which produces cars under the IM, Maxus, MG (yes, that MG), Rising Auto, Roewe, Baojun, Wuling, Hongyan, and Sunwin brands, and under joint ventures with Volkswagen and General Motors. ByteDance and SAIC, as part of Doubao Auto, are said to be working on intelligent automotive solutions (a Chinese tech world buzzword for autonomous driving features), focusing on 'cockpit and intelligent driving' systems. Doubao Auto would use the Volcano Engine as its software backbone to make a software system similar to Huawei's HarmonyOS, an operating system designed to provide a personalized experience across devices like phones, tablets, smart TVs, and even Huawei-developed electric cars. You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. MG IM5 — Source: MG Motor The Volcano Engine is already used by prominent Chinese electric vehicle firms, including the state-owned Changan Auto and GAC Aion, as well as the Geely-linked Lynk & Co. Bytedance is planning to invest in an innovative driving solutions company and has recently hired several former employees from the autonomous driving firm Momenta, according to sources cited by IT-Home. This report follows an earlier report from April 2025, in which SAIC president Jia Jianxu said that it is working with Volcano Engine and other AI partners to create in-car software for tailored personalisation and develop a 'comprehensive innovative ecosystem to meet individual user needs.' Yang Liwei, who runs Volcano Engine's automotive division and leads the Smart Mobility and Embodiment Research Institute, mentioned partnering with SAIC to create an AI cockpit product using ByteDance's Doubao large model. He says this new product can act like a personalized in-car assistant that can figure out what users want before they even say it. 'It not only has multimodal perception capabilities, but is more like a personalized assistant that can understand human intentions,' Yang said in April. 'It can predict user needs in advance and think what you want.' Final thoughts CarNewsChina reported that on July 29, a spokesperson from ByteDance's Volcano Engine denied the rumors that Doubao Auto was a 'direct intelligent driving' business, clarifying that while the Volcano engine provides algorithmic training platforms for its automotive clients, 'it currently has no plans to enter the autonomous driving business.' Besides the purported autonomous driving, ByteDance's AI partnership with SAIC is already a technological bag of futuristic marbles. Mind you, Yang Liwei, the guy who runs Volcano Engine's automotive division, said back in April 2025 that the new product that they are working on with SAIC 'is more like a personalized assistant that can understand human intentions' that 'can predict user needs in advance and think what you want.' Knowing how scarily detailed the TikTok algorithm knows me, that's one heck of a hunk of technology that they might put behind those touch screens in future SAIC-brand cars.
