Fiat has revived its indestructible little mountain goat for the electrified era. This is the Fiat Grande Panda 4x4 concept, and yes, steel wheels make everything better.
It's apparently a 'direct heir' to that classic Eighties workhorse, which are metaphorically mighty shoes to fill: the tiny 1983 classic was a beloved little terrier, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.

The new one will obviously do it with the help of electricity, though this being a concept, Fiat is being a little coy on details. The new Grande Panda is currently available as a fully electric small car, or an £18k hybrid – which marries a three-pot 1.2-litre turbo petrol to a 21kW e-motor – all spun off Fiat's new global 'Smart Car' chassis.
No idea what'll power the front axle, but Fiat said this new Panda 4x4 concept gets an 'innovative' electrified rear axle. What innovation it ushers in hasn't yet been divulged. Rocket speed? Unlimited power? Time travel?
All we've been told about this new four-wheel-drive version is that such innovation on the rear axle allows for 'impressive performance in urban settings and on more demanding terrain'. Fiat can't afford to get the whole 'demanding terrain' bit wrong, here: the original car was rightly praised for its ability to go literally anywhere and outlast the apocalypse. The new one can't just be a show pony.
Though, it does look quite excellent. Fiat has painted the concept in a maroon livery that apparently calls back to a 'popular limited edition version of Panda 4x4', fitted steel wheels, added beige detailing and bolted on a set of lamps on the roof rack.

'With its eyes set firmly on the future, the new Grande Panda 4x4 project is destined to be a manifesto for a fresh vision of sustainable mobility,' said Fiat. 'A vision rooted in innovation, in line with current dictates, while maintaining the characteristics that made it a global cult favourite.'
Like we said, metaphorically mighty shoes to fill. Excited for the Panda 4x4's return?

This will include the Lyriq SUV, which is currently only sold in Switzerland, France, Sweden and Germany. The impressive motor retails for around £68,000 and rivals the likes of the Volvo EX90 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. An entry-level Lyriq has a range of around 330 miles and 520bhp, while a top-tier model hits up to 606bhp. CEO Pere Brugal confirmed the car will be launched in the UK after completing final testing in Ireland. "It is one of the [markets] that we're focusing on right now," he told Autocar. As well as the Lyric, other models will be brought to the UK market though it has not yet been determined which ones. But with GM's headquarters based in Detroit, vehicles brought to the UK will depend on legislation. This is down to the differences in emission regulations and safety standards in Europe and the US. 'If the regulations between the US and Europe harmonise, it will make our life easier," he said. Drivers rave over new 'luxurious' Cadillac EV as company boasts it comes with 10-min perk for those with 'range anxiety' "We will bring a lot of benefit to the final customer, because that will increase the range of options.' There is also chance Europe gets its own bespoke GM model to satisfy the continent's unique wants and demands, he added. News of the Cadillac's return comes just days after Fiat announced that their new Fiat 500 hybrid will be put into production in November this year. The fresh take on the classic hatchback will be produced at the firm's Mirafiori plant in Turin, Italy. The motor will boast the same 1.0-litre three-cylinder mild-hybrid Firefly engine that powers the old 500 and Fiat Panda. Almost identical to the 500e the new Fiat 500 hybrid has been given a reworked front grill to feed more air to the petrol engine. Fiat aims to manufacture over 100,000 units per year of its new hybrid 500 small car. Parent company Stellantis is betting on the model reviving its ailing production in Italy, the brand's head Olivier Francois said on Friday. Stellantis was created in 2021 from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and France's PSA-Peugeot.

Vespa maker Piaggio's profit falls 42% in first half of 2025
July 29 (Reuters) - Italy's Piaggio ( opens new tab said on Tuesday its net profit fell 42.2% to 30.1 million euros ($34.84 million) in the first half of 2025 in a contracting market for motor vehicles. Piaggio, known for its iconic Vespa scooters, sold 238,400 vehicles between January and June this year, compared to 270,100 in the first half of 2024. "In historical moments like these, with international trade disputes and increased geopolitical tensions, being able to remain flexible, controlling liquidity and financial management, is essential," CEO Michele Colaninno said in a statement. The manufacturer said its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) fell 15.3% year-on-year to 147.1 million euros, with an EBITDA margin of 17.3%. The group also pledged to distribute an interim dividend of 4 euro cents per share on its 2025 results. ($1 = 0.8639 euros)
