Who is Nehal Modi and why was he arrested in the US? Know here
Nehal Modi, 46 is the younger brother of fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi. Nehal Modi, born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium, and fluent in English, Gujarati, and Hindi, is wanted in India for laundering criminal proceeds for Nirav Modi, who is held at London prison and facing extradition proceedings in UK upon India's request.
The US prosecutors initiated extradition proceedings based on two charges, including money laundering charges under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and criminal conspiracy charges under Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 201 (disappearance) of the Indian Penal Code, PTI reported.
As per the ED and CBI probe, Nehal Modi played an important role in laundering the proceeds of crime on behalf of Nirav Modi. He is accused of helping in concealing and transferring large amounts of illegal funds through a network of shell companies and international transactions, violating Indian laws.
The chargesheet filed by ED stated that Nehal has been charged with destruction of evidence and 'knowingly and intentionally' assisting Nirav Modi, it added.
After the PNB fraud came into light, Nehal, along with Nirav's close aide and executive Mihir R Bhansali, "took 50 kg gold and substantial cash from Dubai, and directed dummy directors not to reveal his name before the authorities," ED alleged.
In 2018, PNB revealed a major fraud valued at ₹ 13,500 crore, which started at one Mumbai branch and involved prominent figures such as Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi, Gitanjali Gems' managing director. Both Modi and Choksi are accused of manipulating the bank's systems to acquire fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) with the help of some rogue bank officials, enabling them to divert large amounts of money.
The upcoming hearing is set for July 17, where Nehal Modi might request bail, a move anticipated to be challenged by the US prosecutors, PTI reported.
Notably, this is not the first time that Nehal Modi has been accused of such a scam. In 2020, A New York court convicted Modi of fraudulently acquiring diamonds valued at over $2.6 million from LLD Diamonds USA, one of the largest diamond firms globally, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

Twenty years on, Thackeray cousins bury the hatchet
MUMBAI: SHIV Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said he and his cousin, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, have joined forces in the interest of 'Marathi pride' while sharing a political stage with him after nearly 20 years. Uddhav sounded bullish when he said he and Raj will capture power in the Mumbai civic body elections and Maharashtra together. 'We have come together to stay together,' he asserted. At the public rally titled 'Awaj Marathicha' to celebrate the rollback of two government resolutions on introducing Hindi as a third language from Class 1 in state schools, Uddhav said, 'We won't let the government impose Hindi on us.' MNS leader Amit Thackeray, Raj's son, was seen sharing a hug with Uddhav's son Aaditya on the stage. Uddhav alleged that the people who are in power in Maharashtra, are 'slaves of two Gujaratis. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde are in power, not to serve the interest of Maharashtra and Marathi manoos, but of their bosses in Delhi. We will never tolerate Hindi in Maharashtra. We will fight to safeguard our culture and language.' On the rollback of the three-language formula in Maharashtra, both brothers said the BJP-led government had no other option. 'The government rolled back the decision on the three-language formula due to the strong unity shown by Marathi people. This decision was a precursor to the plan of separating Mumbai from Maharashtra,' the MNS chief said, with Uddhav seated next. Raj, in a lighter vein, credited Fadnavis with bringing him and Uddhav together, a feat even Balasaheb Thackeray could not accomplish. 'Your power is in the legislature, ours on the streets,' Raj said to thunderous applause.

Uddhav's Mumbai rally against Hindi imposition encouraging, says CM Stalin
CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin said in a tweet on Saturday that the language war waged by the DMK and the people of Tamil Nadu against Hindi imposition has transcended state boundaries and sparked protests in Maharashtra. He was referring to the rally against Hindi imposition in Mumbai led by Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday. He further said the BJP, which disregards the law, says it would allocate funds only if Tamil Nadu schools agree to teach Hindi as the third language. However, in a state which is ruled by BJP itself, it had to back down fearing public backlash. Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray jointly participated in a rally in Mumbai to celebrate the victory after the Maharashtra state government rolled back its decision to introduce Hindi as the third language in primary schools. Referring to Raj Thackeray's questions at the rally- 'What is the third language in UP or Rajasthan?' and 'Why is Hindi being forced on non-Hindi-speaking states while Hindi-speaking states remain economically backward?', Stalin said, 'I know the union government, which gives preference to developing Hindi and Sanskrit, will have no answers to these questions.' 'Will the union government shed its vindictive approach of insisting on the three-language policy under the NEP and release the Rs 2,152 crore SSA funds to Tamil Nadu?' the CM asked.
