Centre denies permission to Punjab minister Harbhajan Singh to visit US

Chandigarh, Jul 31 (PTI) The Union government has denied political clearance to Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh for his planned visit to the US, sources said on Thursday.
Singh was to participate in the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Legislative Summit 2025, scheduled to be held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA from August 4 to 6.
Political leaders require clearance from the Ministry of External Affairs for travelling abroad.
Singh has not been given political clearance by the Union government for visiting the US, the sources said.
The invitation to Singh was extended jointly by the NCSL and National Legislators' Conference Bharat (NLC Bharat).
The NCSL Legislative Summit 2025 is one of the largest gatherings of legislative leaders, staff experts and policymakers worldwide, creating an environment filled with unparalleled learning, networking and inspiration opportunities.
The summit would feature open sessions covering various aspects of governance, professional development workshops and networking events designed to facilitate knowledge exchange among legislative colleagues from different countries and jurisdictions, according to an official release issued on July 28.
Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan was also denied political clearance for going to participate in a legislature conference in the US in August last year.
In 2022, minister Aman Arora was also denied political clearance for a knowledge sharing study tour to Europe. PTI CHS VSD DIV DIV

India opens new consular application centre in Dallas to serve growing diaspora
Houston, Aug 2 (PTI) The Consulate General of India in Houston has announced the launch of a new Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) in Dallas, Texas, bringing essential consular services closer to thousands of Indian-origin residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The new centre, located at 8360 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway, Suite A-230, was virtually inaugurated by India's Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra. The Dallas ceremony was led by Consul General D C Manjunath, who was joined by local elected officials and Indian-American community members. The Dallas ICAC is among nine such centres being opened across the United States to enhance accessibility to consular services. Other locations include Boston, Columbus, Detroit, Edison, Orlando, Raleigh, San Jose and an upcoming centre in Los Angeles. 'The launch of these new consular application centres across the US is part of our mission to serve the Indian diaspora more effectively by bringing services closer to their homes," Ambassador Kwatra said during the virtual inauguration. 'We remain committed to strengthening the ties between India and its global community." Consul General D C Manjunath said, 'Dallas has a large and dynamic Indian community. Opening this ICAC means residents can now access vital consular services quickly without travelling to Houston. It's truly bringing the Consulate to your doorstep." Local elected officials also welcomed the move. Texas State Representative Vikki Goodwin commented, 'This new consular centre is an important resource for our Indian-American neighbours, making government services more accessible and convenient." Dallas Indian Association president Rajesh Mehta said, 'The ICAC is a game changer for Dallas-area residents. It shows India's dedication to its diaspora and makes a real difference in people's lives." The centre offers services including passport, visa, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) applications, power of attorney, birth and marriage certificates, attestations, police clearance certificates for foreign nationals, No Obligation to Return to India (NORI), and life certificates, among others. The commission termed Gandhi's remarks as "baseless and wild allegations". Singh also said the nation remembers his past rhetoric. "Rahul had threatened Parliament of an earthquake, but when he spoke, it turned out to be a damp squib." Singh said EC is an institution that enjoys a reputation for unquestionable integrity. "It is pulling out all the stops to ensure that the upcoming assembly polls in the state are held in a free and fair manner. It does not behove the leader of the opposition to make frivolous statements about a constitutional body," the BJP MP from Lucknow said. The defence minister reminded the LoP that his own party has blood on its hands, having tried to murder democracy in 1975 with the imposition of the Emergency. The defence minister also criticised the Congress-led opposition for raising questions about Operation Sindoor instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by the Indian armed forces. The former BJP president alleged that the Congress had been soft on insurgency while in office, and tried to frame innocent people by spinning the theory of saffron terror because of vote bank considerations.
