Once rare, now ruthless: The rise of left-arm wrist spin in IPL — Take a deep dive into the numbers

The Hindu23-04-2025

For years, left-arm wrist spinners remained on the fringes of cricket, sidelined by their rarity and the difficulty of mastering the craft.
But in recent seasons, especially in T20s, they've gone from being mere curiosities to game-changers — turning their uniqueness into an advantage.
This shift has reached new heights in IPL 2025. At the halfway mark, the league's three left-arm wrist spinners have combined for 30 wickets — the highest for their type in any IPL season.
They also top the Cricviz average match impact rankings for bowling types this year. Left-arm wrist spin is, in fact, the only category with a positive overall impact in IPL 2025.
Leading this surge are Chennai Super Kings' Noor Ahmad and Delhi Capitals' Kuldeep Yadav (pic above) — both strong contenders to become the first left-arm wrist spinner to win the Purple Cap.
Kuldeep, the most seasoned of the lot, has continued his consistent run. The 30-year-old justified Delhi's decision to retain him, taking 12 wickets with his trademark flight and subtle variations.
Noor, meanwhile, has had a breakout season. After spending years behind Rashid Khan at Gujarat Titans, his Rs 10 crore move to CSK gave him a lead role — and he's responded with relentless wicket-taking in an otherwise tough campaign for his team.
Despite their shared skill set and success, Noor and Kuldeep operate differently.
Left-arm wrist spinners' wicket tally in IPL 2025 so far.
Noor's quick, whippy action and beyond-perpendicular release generate awkward angles and pace. Kuldeep, more orthodox, relies on drift, loop, and deception through the air. Backing them is Mumbai Indians' 24-year-old Vignesh Puthur, a rookie who hasn't yet played senior cricket for Kerala.
Spotted through MI's vast scouting system and mentored by Rashid Khan at MI Cape Town, Vignesh made an immediate impact with a three-wicket haul in his debut against CSK.
Another notable name is Rajasthan Royals' Kumar Kartikeya Singh, whose hybrid style blends orthodox spin with wristy variations — blurring the lines further.
Together, this group has delivered the best economy rate of any bowling type this season: 7.09. It's also the third-best for left-arm wrist spin in IPL history.
What's driving this effectiveness?
Variation. Nearly 50% of their deliveries this season have been change-ups — an unprecedented split. Most of these have been googlies, which have fetched 19 wickets (13 against right-handers) at an economy of 7.08.
That shift in balance — from stock deliveries to deception — has powered the current success.
But the bigger question is whether this trend can last.
As more bowlers adopt the style and batters see it more often, the element of mystery will fade. T20 cricket evolves quickly, and novelty rarely stays novel for long.
For now, though, left-arm wrist spin has found its moment. And IPL 2025 may well be remembered as the season this once-niche art finally took centrestage.

Ex-Coach's Big Reveal: 'Jasprit Bumrah Playing 3 Tests In ENG Was Decided When...'

Last Updated: Former coach Soham Desai revealed that Jasprit Bumrah's limit of three Tests in England was set even before the 2025 Champions Trophy in February. Indian men's team's former strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai has revealed that Jasprit Bumrah's workload limit of only three Tests in England was decided months ago — even before the 2025 Champions Trophy in February-Match in Pakistan and the UAE. After being at his peak in the first four Tests, Bumrah picked up a serious back injury in the fifth match of India's tour of Australia in January. He missed the next three months of international cricket, including the Champions Trophy, though India won the tournament without him. He returned for the IPL and played all games bar the first few. But during the tournament, it was confirmed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar that he would only play three or four Tests. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Shubman Gill and Bumrah himself confirmed that number in the leadup to the first Test in Headingley. 'When Bumrah couldn't make it to the Champions Trophy, India's Future Tours Programme (FTP) was studied and it was decided that he will only play three Tests in England," Desai told The Times of India. Desai also explained how the team judges a player's workload and rest needs. 'There are two ways to analyse the workload. There is an objective way, where we collect data from wearable GPS devices. And then there is a subjective way of observing how the bowler is behaving. There are certain benchmarks set for each player as 'normal' behaviour when they are at peak performance," Desai said. 'If it is observed that a bowler is moving differently or lacks a bit of intensity even in simple tasks like conversations in the team bus, these become markers," he added. There's speculation on whether Bumrah would play the second Test in Edgbaston, given India are trailing the series 1-0. Although Indian assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has denied having made the decision, Desai said venue-specific plans are made much before the series and any change would also happen at least two days before the start of the match. Desai reveals why Bumrah got injured in Australia Desai also said Bumrah's injury in the fifth Test in Sydney had more to do with his excessive workload in the fourth game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. 'There is a set number of overs that is decided for Bumrah to bowl per Test. One can go five-seven overs beyond that limit, but what needs to be seen is how those extra overs are bowled. At the MCG in the previous Test series, he bowled those extra overs without much of a breather between spells. That caused a spike in his workload which triggered the back injury in Sydney," he said. SRH Co-Owner Kavya Maran Breaks Silence On Her Social Media Memes During IPL

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have become a much powerful franchise than they were a few seasons ago. With signings like Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, etc., the franchise has become one of the most feared sides in the T20 league. However, it isn't just the team's players that make it famous, but also its owners. Kavya Maran, a co-owner of the franchise, is often seen in the stands whenever the franchise plays. On a few occasions, Kavya was also spotted giving riveting speeches in the SRH dressing room. Despite being an owner that is not from the entertainment or sporting industry, Kavya gets to feature quite a lot on television sets. In a candid interview, Kavya said that it's her passion of the game that sees her constantly capturing the cameraman's attention. "Those are my raw emotions that you're seeing because my job has brought me to the point that I have to put myself out there. In Hyderabad, I can't do anything; I have to sit there. That's the only place I can sit. But even when I go to Ahmedabad or Chennai, and I'm sitting many feet away, somewhere in the box, the cameraman manages to find me. So, I understand how it becomes memes," she said in a chat with InsideSport. "When it comes to Sunrisers, I genuinely wear my heart on my sleeve. I think when you put your heart and soul into something, you naturally tend to get very personally attached to its successes and failures," said Kavya, the ED & CEO of Sun TV Network and Sunrisers Hyderabad. It was in 2016 that the franchise last managed to lift the IPL title. Since then, the franchise has only reached the final of the tournament twice, in 2018 and 2024. The pursuit of winning their second title, goes on.

Brad Pitt's F1 Mints Rs 24 Crore In Four Days

Last Updated: Besides Brad Pitt, F1 The Movie also features Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzeles and Kerry Condon in key supporting roles. Brad Pitt has made a thunderous return to the cinema with his new sports drama F1 The Movie. Directed by Joseph Kosinski, best known for directing Top Gun: Maverick, the film has earned a total of Rs 24.65 crore net within just four days of its release. F1 has been released in the country in four languages: English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. According to Sacnilk, F1 earned an impressive Rs 3 crore on Monday, June 30, alone, showing only a slight drop from its opening-day collection of Rs 5.5 crore. This is a positive sign that people are enjoying Brad Pitt's new sports drama, based on Formula One racing. What's even more impressive is that F1 is a standalone film and not part of any series or franchise, unlike many Hollywood movies that do well in India. It is an original story, which is competing strongly against new Bollywood releases like Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par and Kajol's Maa. People have been loving the movie in IMAX, which is also giving it a boost for the second weekend. If it keeps going like this, F1 might soon cross the Rs 60 crore, just like Final Destination: Bloodlines did. And globally, experts believe that the movie has a possibility of crossing $500 million and more if the upcoming releases, such as Superman and Jurassic World Rebirth, do not perform as well as expected. Besides Brad Pitt, F1 The Movie also features Javier Bardem, Damson Idris, Tobias Menzeles and Kerry Condon in key supporting roles. The racing drama follows the story of Sonny Hayes (Pitt), a New York City-based Formula One driver who left racing following a horrible crash. After his forced retirement from Formula One, he started racing in other disciplines and working as a taxi driver. Decades later, he returns to the high-stakes world of racing with only one wish to prove himself again. He is brought back to Formula One by his friend and former teammate, Ruben Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, to train his team. Sonny is tasked with training a rookie driver, Joshua Pierce, played by Damson Idris. In addition to the lead cast, the film will also feature professional F1 drivers such as Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, among others. Released on June 27, F1 is running in theatres. First Published:
