Court orders release of woman linked to Sibu drug syndicate
Magistrate Oon Kork Chern granted the release order on Tuesday (June 24) following an application by investigating officer Insp Aminur Rizwan Saiful Bahari.
The woman, represented by solicitor Darren Ling, had been held on remand for four days since June 20.
Her 52-year-old husband remains in custody under a seven-day remand and will appear in court again on Thursday (June 26) for further investigation.
The couple were apprehended during a major operation by the Sibu Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department on June 12 and 13 at locations around Jalan Pedada Commercial Centre and Lorong Permai Jaya.
The raids led to the confiscation of drugs valued at RM532,934.40, including 7,086.7gms of syabu, 2,078.9gms of ketamine, and 2,022.6gms of Erimin 5 pills.
Authorities also seized RM5.15mil in cash, four gold bars, two gold chains, two Rolex watches, and three luxury vehicles, bringing the total estimated value of the seizure to RM8.53mil.
Investigations suggest the syndicate has been active in drug trafficking across the Sibu area for nearly a decade, with the couple identified as key figures in the operation.

Police bust syndicate using karaoke rooms to distribute drugs
JOHOR BARU: Police have dismantled a drug syndicate whose modus operandi involved converting rooms in rented apartments into makeshift "karaoke centres" to lure customers and distribute narcotics. Johor police chief Datuk M Kumar said intelligence gathered since early this year led to the arrest of nine individuals and the seizure of various drugs worth over RM1.7 million in a series of raids last month. The raids were carried out at three locations around the city between 3.30pm on June 20 and 6.30am on June 21. "In the first raid, we arrested three suspects and seized a quantity of drugs at a unit in a gated and guarded apartment. "The second raid, conducted at another unit on the same floor, led to the arrest of six more suspects. "Both apartments had rooms that were modified into 'karaoke centres' used to attract customers, to whom drugs were then sold and distributed," he told a press conference at the Johor police headquarters today. Police later raided a third apartment, where more drugs were found. Kumar said the syndicate is believed to have been active since March. The suspects arrested include four local men, one of whom, aged 52, is believed to be the mastermind, as well as a local woman, a Singaporean man, two Vietnamese women and a Laotian woman. They range in age from 21 to 64. Among the drugs seized were 10.04kg of ecstasy powder, 140g of syabu, 61.5g of ketamine, 20 Erimin 5 pills, 370 yaba pills, 190 ecstasy pills and 33ml of suspected drug-laced liquid, all with a street value exceeding RM1.7 million. "These drugs could have supplied around 34,000 users. The presence of foreign suspects also suggests they may have had international clientele," Kumar said. In addition to drugs, police also seized drug processing and repackaging equipment, two cars, RM1,500 in cash and various jewellery items, bringing the total value of the seizure and forfeiture to more than RM1.9 million. All suspects tested positive for methamphetamine. Background checks showed that four local male suspects had prior criminal records related to drugs and other offences. "The 64-year-old Singaporean man was also listed as 'wanted' in his home country," Kumar said. All suspects are currently in remand until tomorrow and are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty upon conviction. The foreigners are also being investigated under Sections 6(1)(c) and 6(3) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for immigration-related offences. Kumar added that drug syndicates in Johor typically operate in small groups of four to five members. "This is the largest syndicate busted in the state so far this year, involving nine people, including the syndicate leader," he added.

Youths claim trial to assaulting basketball spectator in Siburan

Sia Ming Hui, 21, and a 17-year-old male were charged under Section 324 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same Code. The Section provides for a prison sentence of up to 10 years, or a fine, or caning, or any two of these punishments, upon conviction. According to the charges, both youths allegedly beat up the victim at around 9pm at a basketball court in Siburan. Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan ordered both accused to be released on a cash bail of RM2,500 each with one local surety. He also fixed Aug 15, 2025 for pre-trial case management. Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while both accused were represented by counsel Lim Lian Kee. The incident occurred during a basketball tournament, when several unauthorised individuals forcefully entered the court and assaulted a spectator. Organiser Siburan Basketball Club stated the incident did not involve any players, team members, referees, or members of the organising committee.

Telang Usan blockade: Penan duo released on bond

MIRI (July 3): Two Penan men under remand for allegedly obstructing Sarawak Forest Department (SFD) officers from discharging their duties last week were released on bond by the Magistrates' Court today. Senior Assistant Registrar Mohammad Helmi Ahmad Jani issued the order following an application by a prosecuting officer from the SFD. In the application, the prosecuting officer requested that the pair, aged 52 and 57, be released on SFD bond pending further instructions from the State Attorney-General's Chambers. They were arrested by police on June 28 and remanded for four days until today. The case is being investigated further under Section 103(1) of the Forestry Ordinance 2015 (Chapter 71) for obstructing or interfering with forest officers, police or public servants in the course of their official duties. They are also being investigated under Section 26 of the same Ordinance for offences relating to encroachment on a forest reserve or protected forest. Both men were represented by lawyer Abun Sui Anyit. Meanwhile, SFD in a statement said the investigation papers will be submitted to the State Attorney-General for further action.
