SIBU: A rape suspect who escaped custody while under remand has been sentenced to eight months' jail. On Wednesday (July 2), Magistrate Oon Kork Chern ordered the accused, a 38-year-old Indonesian named Buni, to serve the sentence from the date of his recapture on June 23. He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody, which provides for a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction. He escaped while being escorted by a police officer from the first floor to the lockup room on the ground floor of the central police station at about 4pm on June 21, Following a police manhunt, he was rearrested two days later in front of a house in Jalan Terap, about 4km away. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was still in handcuffs and dressed in purple lock-up attire.

SIBU (July 1): The remand period for an Indonesian couple detained in connection with the murder of a man at a garden in Jalan Rantau Panjang here has been extended by a week. Magistrate Oon Kork Chern granted the extension following an application by the investigating officer ASP Mingat Bakil to enable further investigation of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili previously said in a statement that the victim, an Indonesian in his 30s who was also in the state illegally, was found lying in a pool of blood by a member of the public on June 23. Police received a report regarding the discovery at 5.17pm and then arrested the husband and wife, who are both undocumented, around 9.50pm along Jalan Teku-Pasai Siong on the same day. They were initially placed on a seven-day remand order, which expired today. Section 302 of the Penal Code provides for the death penalty upon conviction or between 30 and 40 years in prison as well as caning if the death penalty is not applied. Read the previous report:

SIBU: A haemodialysis centre employee pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate Court here to a charge of deceiving an MP in relation to a RM5,000 donation intended for kidney patients. The 37-year-old accused claimed trial after the charge was read before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern on Wednesday (June 25). The court subsequently granted the accused bail of RM3,500 with two sureties. The accused was also instructed to report to the investigating officer Insp Mohd Yazid Robin on a monthly basis beginning July 1 until the case is concluded. Additionally, the accused is prohibited from contacting or approaching any individual who may be called as a prosecution witness. The court fixed July 21 for case management. According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have deceived Lanang MP Alice Lau into handing over RM5,000 in cash, purportedly as a donation for haemodialysis patients. The offence is said to have taken place at Lau's service Centre on Jan 2 this year. The accused is charged under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which provides for a jail term ranging from one to 10 years, whipping and a fine, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam appeared for the prosecution while the accused was not represented.

SIBU: The Magistrates' Court has ordered the release of a 44-year-old woman previously detained with her husband on suspicion of masterminding a drug trafficking syndicate in Sibu since 2015. Magistrate Oon Kork Chern granted the release order on Tuesday (June 24) following an application by investigating officer Insp Aminur Rizwan Saiful Bahari. The woman, represented by solicitor Darren Ling, had been held on remand for four days since June 20. Her 52-year-old husband remains in custody under a seven-day remand and will appear in court again on Thursday (June 26) for further investigation. The couple were apprehended during a major operation by the Sibu Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department on June 12 and 13 at locations around Jalan Pedada Commercial Centre and Lorong Permai Jaya. The raids led to the confiscation of drugs valued at RM532,934.40, including 7,086.7gms of syabu, 2,078.9gms of ketamine, and 2,022.6gms of Erimin 5 pills. Authorities also seized RM5.15mil in cash, four gold bars, two gold chains, two Rolex watches, and three luxury vehicles, bringing the total estimated value of the seizure to RM8.53mil. Investigations suggest the syndicate has been active in drug trafficking across the Sibu area for nearly a decade, with the couple identified as key figures in the operation.

Man gets 14 months' jail for housebreaking in Sibu

SIBU (June 23): A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 14 months in prison by the Magistrate's Court here today for housebreaking with the intent to commit theft. Magistrate Oon Kork Chern handed down the sentence on Simon Brown, who resides at the Mile 14 army camp along Jalan Oya, after he pleaded guilty to an amended charge under Section 457 of the Penal Code. The offence was committed at around 2.28am on June 9 at a house located at Lorong Kemuyang 5F. According to the facts of the case, the complainant returned home at around 6pm on the same day and found that the gate between her unit and her neighbour's had been cut and a window had been unlocked. Upon further inspection, she discovered one of the rooms had been ransacked, and a laptop and three smartphones were missing. The total loss was estimated at RM3,700. Police arrested the accused the same day and seized a laptop and three smartphones in his possession. Investigations revealed that he was captured on close-circuit television (CCTV) footage around the house of the complainant's neighbour. The complainant was also able to positively identify her laptop and one of the stolen smartphones among the seized items. Prosecution was conducted by ASP Siti Mariyah Dahari while the accused was not represented by legal counsel.
